Why are some people carrying on as normal?

Genuine question... Why are some people going to restaurants, bars, theatres, cinemas, soft play etc? I honestly don't understand?

8 million “expected” to be hospitalized in the UK. Get this “government” out of power now and FFS do not send your kids to school tomorrow.

Because labour would do a better job Grin

chomalungma · 15/03/2020 22:24

I’m not staying home until I have to. I’m not afraid of a virus

The virus doesn't care what you think of it.

PhilCornwall1 · 15/03/2020 22:24

@Cam77 they are going tomorrow, thanks all the same for your "advice".

nancy75 · 15/03/2020 22:24

Lock down has not worked that well in Italy, South Korea has not had a lock down & they seem to have reached the peak & are reporting slightly more hopeful numbers. South Korea have done this by extensive testing & tracing of carriers - this is what we should be doing.

Krazynights34 · 15/03/2020 22:24

Maybe I’m daft but won’t those trying not to get the virus potentially be handling things carriers/sufferers may have touched...?
Post, takeaways, online shopping, items already purchased from supermarkets, pet supplies...
I’m not sure how staying indoors could guarantee protection.

Tonyaster · 15/03/2020 22:24

I’m astounded how people don’t realise how bad this is going to be

Don't you think people might realise exactly how bad this is going to be and so are enjoying life while they can?

Mind you, according to mumsnet, Brexit was going to plunge us all into darkness as well

U2HasTheEdge · 15/03/2020 22:25

Until I am told differently I will continue to live my life as normal.

I work in the community, so I am out and about daily anyway. There might come a time when we have no choice but to stay in and do nothing, but that time isn't now. My children are at school, I am still going to work, life is going on as normal here.

Going into lockdown before being told to doesn't seem like the right thing to do. I know no one in real life who isn't continuing like normal right now.

@MrsWooster

Surely there’s a middle ground

I agree - it hurts me not to have gone to the pub at the weekend - but I knew it would be a busy, crowded event.

But I am off to work - because it's essential and I will support the local sandwich shop.

A balance.

I’m astounded how people don’t realise how bad this is going to be

Oh, piss off. You know no more than anyone else. if I’m going to be forced into a life of misery I’d prefer it not to be until it has to

Calledyoulastnightfromglasgow · 15/03/2020 22:26

I’m carrying on. Our schools are open and I have to work tomorrow and take the train
to get there. So I don’t see why I should stop doing other stuff.

cyclingmad · 15/03/2020 22:27

Following governemnt advice, if I show symptoms I will stay and work from home and not go out until I am 100% better. Otherwise I am out and about as normal and just washing hands alot more.

Then again I live alone so if I do catch it I won't be bringing it to anyone else in my house

Sarcelle · 15/03/2020 22:27

I am worried more about the mental health of everybody through this and afterwards. I am not at all frightened of getting it, but really frightened of the breakdown in society. We seem to have lost our collective marbles. People talk about blitz spirit but the UK is a different beast from WWII. We are selfish and weak, the last few days have shown that.

I am taking a break from Mumsnet, Twitter and the more sensationalist new sites and avoid the tv/radio news. I will check news from a "dry" source like Reuters a couple of times a day in case I need to know something. I am going to avoid talking about it with colleagues etc. People talk about blitz spirit but the UK is a different beast from WWII. We are selfish and weak, the last few days have shown that.

I have had enough of the scaremongering and hysteria, I think some people are getting off on it. This is a serious world event, and people will die and suffer lasting effects from it. But lots of people won't die, and life will go on, babies will be born, the grass will grow, we will need to work, keep the country going.

Stay as well as you can, see you on the other side!

nellodee · 15/03/2020 22:28

We have no idea if lockdown has worked in Italy yet. The lockdown was only imposed 6 days ago. As we can see from Wuhan, it took 10 days after the lockdown for the downturn to become apparent. I am hoping that we see Italy fall off its exponential line some time before the next weekend.

Why are some people carrying on as normal?
Megan2018 · 15/03/2020 22:28

@chomalungma stop being a twat. I am just articulating how I feel. I work in HE with some of the Virologists working on this. It is serious but not worth being afraid of. Get a bloody grip

PhilCornwall1 · 15/03/2020 22:28

I’m astounded how people don’t realise how bad this is going to be

If you read most of the hysterical threads on here, the world is going to end any day now.

maggienolia · 15/03/2020 22:28

Because if I stay off work, Mrs A won't eat or have a clean pad, Mr B will try to make his own breakfast and likely blow up his microwave, and Mrs C will lie in her own waste all morning with her skin rotting nicely.
Next question?

chomalungma · 15/03/2020 22:29

When people who are carrying on as normal and follow Government's advice see the situation and advice in other countries, what do you think of that?

Tonyaster · 15/03/2020 22:29

Sarcelle agree 100 percent.

countdowntonap · 15/03/2020 22:29

As long as the government makes me work as normal, I will continue to live the rest of my life as normal. It’s either a risk to be around others, or it isn’t. There was a bigger distance between myself and others at the gym, spa, bars and parks this weekend than their will be in my workplace tomorrow. If a lockdown is instructed, I will follow all instructions given.

Hockeyboysmum · 15/03/2020 22:29

People seem to enjoy panicking - remember y2k? The world was going to end with the millennium- planes falling from sky etc.

Cora1942 · 15/03/2020 22:30

Can someone give me a link to evidence that people are definitely immune after having Coronavirus. The herd immunity argument surely doesnt add up.

MigginsMrs · 15/03/2020 22:30

I agree @Sarcelle. Absolute fucking madness. My Gran lived under Nazi occupation for 5 years she’d be turning in her grave at all this insanity

indemMUND · 15/03/2020 22:30

Healthy young people with no elderly family members should carry on as normal for as long as they can. The ignorant and mindless with family members who are older and have underlying health conditions carrying on as normal will have no idea of the harm they will do and will be up in arms when it all goes to shit. It's not even survival

chomalungma · 15/03/2020 22:30

Back at you. I have worked in microbiology and public health as well and have experience of the tests used to test for viruses which are being used at the moment.
