Why are some people carrying on as normal?

Genuine question... Why are some people going to restaurants, bars, theatres, cinemas, soft play etc? I honestly don't understand?

Because the deaths aren't in the 100s per day yet.

They will be though.

10 days time will see very different behaviour patterns

happymummy12345 · 16/03/2020 10:08

I never go anywhere anyway so that side of things is irrelevant to me. But my husband still has to go to work, there's nothing we can do about it. Ds will go to nursery as usual while he still can. Also we can't afford to buy loads of stuff in one go. We just about get by as it is. So not sure what we will do if lockdown does happen as we would last a day or 2 at most.

happymummy12345 · 16/03/2020 10:09

My husband works in a restaurant in the kitchen so he can't avoid it

Iminaglasscaseofemotion · 16/03/2020 10:11

Funny that people want everything to be on lock down accept the things that are convenient to them. Bet they still want to be able to buy shopping, which means shops, factories, farms, delivery drivers etc still have to work. They will also still want to be able to watch TV, have gas and electric and Internet access, so all those people need to be working. If you have a fire in your home will you attempt to put it out yourself instead of phoning the fire brigade. Should all elderly people and vulnerable people in care homes be left to fend for themselves. I could go on and on. The people banging on about everyone should be going into lock down, and making the people that have no choice but to carry on as normal, feel guilty are being very unreasonable.

YouAreTheEggManIAmTheWalrus · 16/03/2020 10:14

Because people mostly cannot think critically, won’t think for themselves and need to be told exactly what to do by others. The herd mentality applies.

Only when the older and more vulnerable members of their families and friends are dead will they wake up and live to regret their failings.

Alsohuman · 16/03/2020 10:24

Lockdown hasn’t worked that well in Italy

Italy has a much older population and higher incidence of smoking. Italians are much more tactile than us too. It was always going to be worse there.

confusedandtired99 · 16/03/2020 10:27

This reads like a competition to see who can out socialise the other.

I agree @YouAreTheEggManIAmTheWalrus

MyHairNeedsASnip · 16/03/2020 10:39

I've read it all and now I'll do mine.

Because what's the alternative? Locking us all in our house after a bleach bath?

Our kids are going to see shit we never wanted them to see soon enough if other countries are anything to go by. Friends and relatives dying, armed forces on the streets, queuing for miles for fruit and veg and coming back with fuck all.

So while we're being told to continue unless we're unwell, I'm doing my best to keep it normal for now. Because in a few weeks it probably won't be. I've made adjustments, there's lots of "happy birthday dear Boris" going on, I take our temperatures before we go see the elderly parents.

I really object to posters calling others "fucking stupid" for not battening down the hatches.

We're all doing our best.

Tessatea · 16/03/2020 10:41

I'm going to carry on and work because my family need a roof, food and hot water.

thewalrus · 16/03/2020 10:48

We went to a local beauty spot yesterday on the basis that it might be our last chance for a while. Car parking was rammed (it's a 3-mile long beach, so didn't feel crowded apart from the parking). Looked like a lot of other people were doing the same thing. No one seemed to be talking about anything else though.

Carrying on as normal for now (with hand-washing etc precautions). I WFH anyway and DH is in NHS strategic job, so business as usual for both of us. Kids in school while it's there, but I'm hoping they close soon in many ways. No judging any choices anyone makes from me - we're all trying to do the right thing, just hard to know what it is!

DressingGownofDoom · 16/03/2020 10:52

Because if you don't go to things that aren't cancelled there will be consequences. I have a language class tonight, I have to go because the class is still on, I'm not giving up a years worth of work and abandoning my qualification unless I must.

Sweetbabycheezits · 16/03/2020 10:52

I am able to wfh, so it's fairly easy for me to self isolate. I am also not planning any public outings for the time being, and have enough food supplies to carry us for a while. My family and I are low risk, but why chance it if we don't have to?

willdoitinaminute · 16/03/2020 11:00

I went into semi retirement last year and can easily stop work temporarily ( self employed) but having been full time HCP for 30+years working and living at 100mph I am bored. I was after 2 weeks. People don’t realise how stressful it will be locking down for 16weeks.
I intend to carry on as log as possible.
DH and I had so many plans for this summer. Looks like we’ll be doing a lot of decorating and gardening so likely to be even more bored.

GobOnAStick · 16/03/2020 11:05

No evidence that having recovered, there will be any immunity. I am not going out at all atm only for essentials.

adiposegirl2 · 16/03/2020 11:10

Because people cannot comprehend the magnitude and implications of Covid19.
If you are under 60 and live in a peaceful country, you have never had to experience anything terrible

Scruffyoak · 16/03/2020 11:11

I agree. I have to go to work. I have to go to the pharmacy to pick up medication for people. I have to go to uni groups unless they get cancelled.

Beautiful3 · 16/03/2020 11:12

Because stressing about it is not going to help anybody. Stress can weaken the immune system, making it susceptible to catching viruses. If you're not in the at risk category, please carry on as normal. Don't stop using local businesses, other wise they'll go under. Also please stop panick buying, there is enough for everyone if we buy our normal amount of groceries.

elizabethrose · 16/03/2020 12:02

I took my children to school as normal this morning, but it appears half of the parents haven't. It was like a ghost town. I do hope all those children who aren't at school are not playing out, going to the cinema etc. If they're off school they should be isolating.

ScouseMar · 16/03/2020 12:13

Because:

I have no symptoms of illness at all nor do any of my family that I live with.
The kid's school is open and I need to take them and pick them up.
I need to do the weekly food shop.
I have to go to work.
The car needs filling up with petrol.
We have not been advised to 'lockdown' (yet)

However I'm not going out any more than is really necessary. Kids (sports) clubs have all been cancelled, no social events on over the coming weeks etc.

Tessatea · 16/03/2020 13:56

Because people cannot comprehend the magnitude and implications of Covid19

People NEED to work or they dont get paid. No pay = no money for rent, Bill's, food etc

MyuMe · 16/03/2020 14:08

I wonder about the demographic of people on here calling for everyone to lockdown and stay inside.

People who dont need to work? Who wont go hungry. Who won't lose their homes?

Iminaglasscaseofemotion · 16/03/2020 14:24

Because people cannot comprehend the magnitude and implications of Covid19

Because people can not comprehend the magnitude and implications for some people if they don't work. Homelessness and starvation could be a real possibility for some.

adiposegirl2 · 16/03/2020 16:50

The bank is not going to repossess homes for 1 to 3 months of non payment are they.

What are the airline staff whom have been told to take up to 8 weeks unpaid leave going to pay their Bill's with?

What did people do whilst WW2 carried on for 6 years?

What will people one benefits do?- after all, they can't stockpile. They will most probably for go paying rent to buy more food.

I'm self employed just stated my biz January but has fallen off a cliff now.

I have credit cards I may have to claim benefits. My health is my wealth. If I'm sick what happens to my kids? Youngest is still an infant. So my school aged are not going to school incase I get infected as it seems kids are carriers. I cant afford to be sick and not just financially. Who will care for my kids who will care for me? If I'm sick who will buy my family food? I've gone to extreme measures to protect my environment. I live a top 5 london borough for CV cases. I must protect my health. The dead and I'll cant pay Bill's but the healthy and living can sure pay their debts off

We find a way

adiposegirl2 · 16/03/2020 16:52

The dead and sick cant pay Bill's

pickletickled · 16/03/2020 17:11

I can't work from home (Retail manager working between 3 shops). Neither can dh (24/7 support setting for vulnerable adults) so we have both got to get on with it.
We both are only leaving the house to go to work or nip to shops. No socialising since last weekend and don't intend to right now.
My company will not close the doors until the government enforce it so for me the show must go on.
Dh would get ssp if he had to self isolate/ I think I'd get full pay (not certain as Head office won't confirm) but still we can't afford to self isolate just in case. Only if we absolutely need to.
