Because we are too rebellious. I cannot envisage people staying indoors for any length of time

I hope the government just takes the action of having a lock down very soon (and supports business’s)

Obviously there are far more stupid and selfish people than they realised

I know they are trying to stagger this but the utter stupidity of some will just created more pressure on the NHS

rhowton · 17/03/2020 12:27

There are no where near enough Police Officers....

EnthusiasmIsDisturbed · 17/03/2020 12:41

We have the military to enforce a lock down of that is needed

People do generally follow rules in this country just some are too stupid to follow advice and need a rule to be put in place before that will curb their lives

Alsohuman · 17/03/2020 12:43

We have the military to enforce a lock down of that is needed

Never going to happen.

BirdandSparrow · 17/03/2020 12:44

There are no where near enough Police Officers.... have you read the thread?
IF the UK does the same as Italy and Spain, it will be made to work. People will comply on the whole. Those who don't comply will be shamed publicly. The police will fine people and shame them. They will use drones and patrol cars with loud speakers. It will be made to work if it is implemented. The UK isn't different or special, it will work if it is implemented.
But you needn't worry cos they obviously aren't actually going to bother doing it. Just "advise" distancing and then say, oh well it's your fault, you didn't try hard enough.

Mistigri · 17/03/2020 12:48

If it can be made to work in France and Italy, then the U.K. - where people are mostly very (often excessively) compliant with rules - will be a piece of cake.

Remember those threads about complying with utterly ridiculous school uniform rules to the letter?

The problem for the U.K. is not your population but your government. Don't let the PM blame you for his indecision and incompetence.

EnthusiasmIsDisturbed · 17/03/2020 12:48

If the military needed to be involved they would be

Why do you think that wouldn’t happen ? There isn’t going to be mass anarchy but if the police needed support they would be used

EnthusiasmIsDisturbed · 17/03/2020 12:52

I agree if it can work in Italy and France can work here

We are on the whole compliant and like rules we might of course write a few letters of complaint ....

rwalker · 17/03/2020 12:56

completely agree

Namethecat · 17/03/2020 13:02

Meanwhile my 84 year old tells me shes off to lunch to a pub with her friend because that's what They do on a Tuesday. On the way back she will also do what she has always done , B&M for her shampoo and bird food, Iceland for her frozen stuff and then Tescos and yes we have explained what the situation means.

JJ12 · 17/03/2020 13:06

You cannot kill a virus. You can only defend yourself against a virus through catching it so your body makes the antibodies naturally to defend against it or by vaccine. A vaccine can take up to 18 months to produce. They are starting human testing in April however when successful the country that makes the vaccine may use the bulk of it for their own country first before selling it to others and as it’s worldwide it could take up to 2 years before everyone is immunised therefore the world cannot stop and go into lockdown for this long people need to eat and need to work to do so. I dislike the tories but I totally agree with the way they are handling this. The healthy are better to get exposed to it so they are then immune. It’s those with breathing difficulties and old aged pensioners that need to lie low till the worst of this is Over. Statistically speaking if you take the social media and news away from this the stats are pretty low in comparison to seasonal flu. We all need to stay calm build good hygiene which we should be doing anyway and pray to god that our loved ones are going to get through all this.

adiposegirl2 · 17/03/2020 13:08

It's our civic and human duty to follow guidelines. If we don't then lockdown.

If anyone wants to act in mischief, they should be detained under the mental health act.

BirdandSparrow · 17/03/2020 13:09

The healthy are better to get exposed to it so they are then immune. experts in immunology disagree with this. The WHO disagrees with this. People are testing positive again after recovering. We don't know enough about this virus to say herd immunity will work.

Alsohuman · 17/03/2020 13:12

If the military needed to be involved they would be

They won’t be, it’s not their role and the chiefs of staff would strongly resist it. As for sectioning people - and then what? There aren’t enough mental health beds for those who need them.

Eckhart · 17/03/2020 13:13

We don't know enough about this virus to say herd immunity will work

This. Why do laymen think they know better than experts?

Poppydaisies · 17/03/2020 13:38

The virus is also likely to mutate so immunity is not guaranteed.

JJ12 · 17/03/2020 13:49

That would mean the vaccine won’t work either.

Mistigri · 17/03/2020 13:50

We are on the whole compliant and like rules we might of course write a few letters of complaint ....

Thing is that a lockdown doesn't have to be 100% water tight (it can't be anyway, as some people still have to work).

It just needs the majority of people to drastically reduce their social contacts and the virus no longer has the "social oxygen" it needs to spread widely.

BirdandSparrow · 17/03/2020 13:57

It just needs the majority of people to drastically reduce their social contacts and the virus no longer has the "social oxygen" it needs to spread widely. Exactly.

alloutoffucks · 17/03/2020 13:58

The Italians are famous for not following rules. Do you think they would quietly stand obediently in queues like the British often do? If a lock down can work there, it will work anywhere.
So they give out large fines in Italy for going out when you should not. That alone if there is tough enforcement, will stop people.

BirdandSparrow · 17/03/2020 14:04

www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2020/mar/15/epidemiologist-britain-herd-immunity-coronavirus-covid-19 The difference between trying to create herd immunity through vaccine and just letting it rip through a country and the problems that brings (crash the healthservice)

EnthusiasmIsDisturbed · 17/03/2020 14:05

Yes I know a lock down doesn’t mean we can’t go out at all and some have to go to work (I will have to)

But it will have to work as well as it can and we are more compliant than some other cultures it will work because it has to

Riverviews · 17/03/2020 14:08

I'm Spanish and I think, compared with us, the Brits are law obeying people. If there's a rule, most people follow it here.

So if there's a lock down, it will work. Nobody likes to be locked in, but what can we do?

Snowy111 · 17/03/2020 15:18

When the situation gets really bad, social pressure will make the vast majority abide by lockdown
