Lockdown won't work in U.K

Because we are too rebellious. I cannot envisage people staying indoors for any length of time

I’m paraphrasing another poster on another thread “we don’t want to stay inside temporarily so we’ll just die instead”.

It’s not going to be fun, it’s no ones idea of a good time but the point it’s to mitigate the affect of a pandemic. I don’t want to passively accept that my loved ones might die. They are shamefully over 65 and having worked for 40+ years are volunteering in their retirement. But hey they’ve had a good innings and herd immunity is a cure.

Hoggleludo · 15/03/2020 19:33

My husband is Sam. He says nice to meet you.

PuzzledObserver · 15/03/2020 19:34

Rates of death still going up in Italy as well so is lock down working?

If the incubation period is up to 14 days, it will take that long to see the impact on new infections. The people dying today were infected on average 3 weeks ago.

Cohle · 15/03/2020 19:38

I expect being fined £25,000 and the threat of imprisonment will clarify the minds of those to selfish to comply otherwise.

JustTurtlesAllTheWayDown · 15/03/2020 19:39

I don't really understand this or people who would break a lockdown.
Staying inside would be inconvenient and people may find it extremely frustrating, but there'd be a damn good reason for it.
We are potentially looking at thousands of extra deaths of the vulnerable, disabled and elderly.
Anyone thinking they're 'too rebellious' to stay in their own homes for a bit deserves a kick up the arse. I'd fully support large fines for anyone breaking a curfew. It'd be hugely irresponsible and selfish.

LittleLittleLittle · 15/03/2020 19:39

@Hoggleludo your original post didn't state they have to pass legislation in parliament first to give the police such emergency powers.

I suspect they will have to use the army in the UK as British police don't as a routine carry guns like in most other European countries. Was listening to the radio today and a British person who now lives in Spain said the police there having guns makes the difference.

Apparently the Brits in Benidorm's response to the pubs etc being closed was to buy lots of booze and go to the beach. I hope they have been suitably dispatched by the police. And it's that kind of mentality that will make it very hard for a proper lockdown situation in this country.

Hoggleludo · 15/03/2020 19:41

It says it's all set to pass though.

My father lives out in Spain. He was sent home today. They are on total lockdown.

LittleLittleLittle · 15/03/2020 19:41

@JustTurtlesAllTheWayDown people would break a lockdown as they think a run in an semi-isolated area in a city/town/large village or a bike ride would mean they wouldn't come into contact with someone else.

bellinisurge · 15/03/2020 19:41

There's an easy way and a hard way for society to do this.

Bezalelle · 15/03/2020 19:41

If they've got enough police to arrest folk for misgendering people, I'm sure they'll be able to muster up some officers to enforce quarantine.

LittleLittleLittle · 15/03/2020 19:41

@TitsInAbsentia in Ireland people have been told not to have house parties.

ChardonnaysPetDragon · 15/03/2020 19:42

This is getting utterly batshit.

We have thread after thread saying the government is killing people by not implementing measures and threads saying it won't work.

Where are they putting the arrested people?

Plenty of cruise ships going spare.

cinders222 · 15/03/2020 19:43

They would have to bring in Army, we hardly have enough police where I cover to deal with normal calls. I would also imagine annual leave and rest days will be cancelled and enforced 12 hour shifts and that we will only be dealing with serious incidents , everything else will be a case of police will not attend

user1497207191 · 15/03/2020 19:44

When there is a lockdown, those out will stand out like a sore thumb, so easy for the police to notice and deal with them. I've been looking at the Rome webcams - the odd person walking around stands out and are soon approached by the police.

crustycrab · 15/03/2020 19:45

@TitsInAbsentia the beach was cordoned off by police. It's been like a ghost town since.

"The U.K. police have been given the ok to arrest anyone with corona virus out in public or so my dh said." 😂😂 stop spouting such utter shit Sam. Does she believe everything you tell her? Wink

Bluepeace · 15/03/2020 19:46

It will be the military generally not just the army. Sorry pedantic point but there is more than one branch of the military! The RAF and Navy will be helping out too no doubt.

Anyone know what happens with getting food in a lockdown?

LittleLittleLittle · 15/03/2020 19:46

@ChardonnaysPetDragon they are actually worried about what will happen in prisons if it spreads.

Alsohuman · 15/03/2020 19:47

Just look at the ludicrous behaviour over loo roll, that mentality is simply not compatible with compliance or the greater good...

That’s exactly what an eminent epidemiologist said. A population that can’t be trusted to buy toilet paper responsibly certainly can’t be trusted to self isolate.

rayoflightboy · 15/03/2020 19:47

in Ireland people have been told not to have house parties.

Not only that all the pubs and restaurants have closed voluntarily.

Loads of FB posts about it.

Bluepeace · 15/03/2020 19:48

Although the military has drastically reduced since the Tories came into power too. Are we really expecting patrols in all villages, towns and cities? Can't see it happening rurally.

Alice02132354 · 15/03/2020 19:48

Well, the current death toll could imply 40k infections. That's even if the schools shut tomorrow (whatever effect that would have)
If you're an old person going out into that, I really hope your immune system can handle it.. and if it can't let's hope theres a spare bed at the hospital in 2 weeks time when we are looking at a death toll of 240. Cause that 240 will be 100% old people and those with underlying conditions.... not children.
