I thought some of us might find it useful to have a Mumsnet thread specifically dedicated to tracking, discussing and analysing the national and global Covid-19 data.

Direct sources of data include:
The UK govt daily update
and
worldometer global data

Today's UK figures have not yet been released. Yesterday was as follows:

UK
March 14th 2020:
Cases: 1,140
Deaths: 21

This is similar to Italy's figures on the date February 28th/29th.
Their March 1st data= cases:1577 deaths:41

I'll add today's numbers when they are released.

More than 70% of early coronavirus patients who have been admitted to intensive care units in the UK are men, with the vast majority having no severe existing conditions prior to being infected, official figures reveal

This is interesting. [[https://news.sky.com/story/coronavirus-first-analysis-reveals-trends-in-uks-critical-cases-11962457 Source: Sky News]

I wonder why? I would speculate it is a behavioural reason rather than a biological difference.

Pishposhpashy · 27/03/2020 11:54

That sky news link doesn't work for me

Ereshkigalangcleg · 27/03/2020 11:56

I wonder why? I would speculate it is a behavioural reason rather than a biological difference.

Why is that? Many medical conditions have a higher prevalence/different presentation in males or in females. It could involve multiple factors, both behavioural and biological.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 27/03/2020 11:57

The number holds in other countries too, as far as I'm aware.

DuLANGDuLANGDuLANG · 27/03/2020 11:57

There you go Pish

There are a number of X chromosome linked immune deficiencies that only affect boys. I reckon this virus might have discovered another one for us.

That link says page not found. Have they removed it?!

Ereshkigalangcleg · 27/03/2020 12:00

The first link posted at 9.37 am still works for me

Ereshkigalangcleg · 27/03/2020 12:03

I read somewhere that there was a higher risk attached to higher blood sugar level - may have been on another MN thread. Hence the greater risk for diabetics and the elderly. Was going to check it out to see if correct.

Sexnotgender · 27/03/2020 12:06

I think poor lifestyle will have an impact. I’ve seen several deaths of people who were apparently ‘fit and healthy’ who frankly look neither.

Blossom513 · 27/03/2020 12:20

I did read a couple of days ago (sorry can't recall where) that in China and Italy a larger proportion of men smoked in the older age groups being affected by the virus. Not sure if that is true of the UK and other nations.

Barracker · 27/03/2020 12:32

Ereshkigal that's exactly where my mind went too. So many diseases seem to have some correlation with sugar metabolism.

I'm probably a bit primed to think this way as I've been low carb for some time. But my radar pings at possible connections.

the statistics for South Korea look very strange / promising, the last graph on this page, the graph titled "Outcome of Cases (Recovery or Death) in South Korea"

www.worldometers.info/coronavirus/country/south-korea/

How do other people interpret it? To me, it looks so good that I don't understand why more people aren't talking about it, or am I interpreting it wrong?

ScrimpshawTheSecond · 27/03/2020 12:51

This cardiologist seems to agree, Barracker.

DuLANGDuLANGDuLANG · 27/03/2020 12:51

South Korea have been doing the digital surveillance thing, mapping, tracking and testing before symptoms occur.

They did really well with the ‘containment’ phase (unlike us)

Derbygerbil · 27/03/2020 12:53

@jhj67

It is good compared to others as it’s thought their extensive testing picked up those with minor symptoms that are being missed by others. However, it’s worth noting the death rate hasn’t really dropped.... It was 0.7% a few weeks back - now it’s double that.

Cornettoninja · 27/03/2020 12:54

South Korea have really embraced testing and technology to compliment their distancing policies.

I’ve read that they have a system where an app gives you access to their subway system; green if you’re clear and red if you’re not. They’ve also used apps to let people know how many people in a certain radius are tested positive. I keep reading that apparently we wouldn’t stand for it here but I bloody would.

Orangeblossom78 · 27/03/2020 12:55

It's on a spectrum isn't it, blood sugar issues, could have pre diabetes and start of metabolic syndrome without having diagnosed diabetes I suppose.

Don't about a quarter of us have pre diabetes? Not sure.

Yes South Korea have an advanced system and I think this is due to past planning / response to e.g. SARS in the past. So they are more prepared / set us for it and very strict in tracing etc

thank-you to those who answered. After this is over, will be interesting to see what preparations we put in for next time and how the current reaction is viewed. Sadly I think there are many on both sides who already have a certain mindset and will not change / will not properly listen and consider what the other side are saying.

What are people's thoughts about the figures in USA?

www.worldometers.info/coronavirus/

I'm no trump fan, but he's getting it in the neck for high infection rates. Test rates are high in USA, so I thought I'd look at the daily death rate.

Latest figures give a daily death rate of +10 in USA.

Compared to ours just released, it's very low. Especially when you factor in population size.

NotDavidTennant · 27/03/2020 14:59

That's not the full death rate for the US. I think like the UK it gets added in dribs and drabs. Yesterday's death rate for the US was 268.
