Just witnessed the future in Asda car park!

Just witnessed an elderly lady telling a man in a face mask that "he should be staying at home if he has it"

He then told her that he didn't have it and it was a precaution.

He sounded like he was Italian so she shouted "I bet you have been to Italy"

He then flew into a tirade shouting that she should be self isolating as she was over 70 - and to quote him "you're all going to F**ing die if you don't!

As I walked away they were still screaming at each other from their cars!

Is this the future! We will all be turning on each other!

There were some dodgy goings on during the war though. There were incidents of kids vandalising air-raid shelters in London, and a lot of looting during air-raid and profiteering.

Good BBC article about it: www.google.com/amp/s/www.bbc.co.uk/news/amp/uk-england-33566789

My husband works in a supermarket and he is getting so much abuse off people because they haven't got this or that. I get they are scared (I am), can't get supplies that they need but they cant take things out on retail staff, it is not their fault.

Thinkingabout1t · 15/03/2020 14:18

On nextdoor, lots of people are offering help to their neighbours and lots of good will is circulating. It’s very encouraging. I hope it spreads.

SparkyBlue · 15/03/2020 14:18

I was in boots the other day and a woman came in and went mental because the pharmacist didn't know where the nail brushes were. He was really nice and called one of the sales assistants over and was explaining to the rude as fuck woman that he is the pharmacist so doesn't know the exact layout of stock (it's a fairly large store) as he is always behind the pharmacy counter. Anyway she went absolutely mental and started ranting and raving. I feel so sorry for retail staff having to deal with this shit.

ivfbabymomma1 · 15/03/2020 14:18

I was in b&m yesterday and there was about 10 handwashes left. Yet two people were arguing over how many the other should be taking and one was then racist towards the other! It was so sad! (I swiped one handwash off the shelf whilst they continued to argue) GrinHmm

Binglebong · 15/03/2020 14:19

Saw a post saying the tannoy in asda announced anyone taking goods from someone else's trolley would be kicked out.

dollyknocker · 15/03/2020 14:19

With the media constantly whipping everyone into a frenzy it's really not surprising people are buckling under the strain. Imagine if they were calmly reporting actual facts and figures instead of attention grabbing headlines!!

Carrie7469 · 15/03/2020 14:21

Just been to Morrisons. No toilet roll, no pasta, no tinned tomatoes. Loads of antibacterial hand wash though and everyone seemed calm enough.

moondance19 · 15/03/2020 14:23

In Tescos in Ireland this morning never saw any bad behaviour though lots had full trolleys bursting over. Quite a lot of empty shelves. I noticed that a lot of women had their scarves round their mouths, (like you do when you’ve had a tooth out) Does anyone know if this is affective I wonder?

ImperfectTents · 15/03/2020 14:23

People were so lovely during the war apart from the starving, gassing and burning of millions of innocent people, the internment's, the court Marshall's and you know war

NoBoojustNo · 15/03/2020 14:23

I had a tirade of abuse hurled at me by a customer the other day. I've never been spoken to like that in my entire life before this. I have to say I was shaken and I'm a grown up adult.

TheWordmeister · 15/03/2020 14:24

Blimey. I must live in an ultra-civilised area. I have seen no evidence of any anti-social behaviour.

MimiLaRue · 15/03/2020 14:25

That stupid racist old lady should have stayed at home.

GhostofFrankGrimes · 15/03/2020 14:27

I see the idea of bringing people together post brexit has been shot to pieces. I imagine the type of people stockpiling bog roll would use snowflake as an insult.

Agree this behaviour is the result of Thatcherite neo liberal economics.

But I hate to think what things could be like in the USA if they are faced with food/medical shortages.

I'm in the US and I think that's a reasonable concern, to be honest. Lack of paid sick leave, etc., means that even taking basic steps to prevent spread is a challenge for many. Who will pay the rent/buy groceries if they aren't getting paid?

That said, I went onto Next Door last night (looking forward some light relief to be honest) and my feed was full of posts from people offering to run errands/grocery shop for people who can't get out. People offering to provide breakfast and lunches for parents whose kids may not be in school this week (we are expecting state-wise closures soon). Lots of food-insecure kids here (big city) and seeing the generosity and willingness to pull together actually made me quite emotional nothing to do with the wine I sank last night I'm actually not despairing just yet.

*@TrappedInThatBrightMoment

Our Tesco’s killed the panic spiral this morning by having every till open and shelves being aggressively restocked, so there were no queues, and the overall effect was calm and relaxed

That’s brilliant. If all the stores did this it would definitely help

@everythingisginandroses

The food bank donation box at my local Tesco is overflowing. That is all

That’s heartening to read, thank you for sharing 🌷

I guess the difference between the war & now is that during the war Local people weren’t a threat to each other. The enemy was clear -not creeping around unseen.

It was safer to ‘stick together’ This virus is making people scared of each other 😢

chomalungma · 15/03/2020 14:28

Fine where I was this morning.

Bizarrely - no 'pasta' left - but plenty of spaghetti.

VivaLeBeaver · 15/03/2020 14:28

Does anyone know if Sunday trading laws have been relaxed. Because when I got into tesco at 10.02 this morning (England) some people had their trolleys very fully stacked with stuff from different aisles. They’d been in the store for more than 2 mins.

MimiLaRue · 15/03/2020 14:30

I'm actually not despairing just yet
Neither am I- ive seen only kind behaviour out and about. Next door app is full of offers to help neighbours get food, people in the supermarket were all polite and courteous, noone pushing or grabbing anything. Aside from the lack of things, it seems completely normal out there.
Besides, ive seen aggressive confrontations between motorists and other people in non- viral times anyway. Its no huge development- people have always been arses.

Watercoloursky · 15/03/2020 14:30

I went to our local Tesco (East London) for when it opened this morning - there was already a crowd outside waiting for the doors to open, and once we got inside it was absolute chaos. By the time I got to the aisle where the loo roll is kept it was literally stripped bare - not one pack left, and no tissues of any kind either. This is within about 10 minutes of the store opening!

People were taking entire trays of tinned tomatoes, chickpeas, etc off the shelves and putting them in their basket, cardboard and all - it's just so selfish. I'd only popped in for a few bits and was lucky to be able to get what I needed (not stockpiling, just wanted to cook breakfast so had nipped in for bread, milk, and bacon!) but it was a horrible experience. The queues at the tills were enormous, and everyone was barging round the aisles. It felt really charged and angry in ther,. and by the time I left the store, the staff had stopped any more people coming in, they were just opening the doors to let people out, then closing them again immediately. There was a big crowd outside who I felt sorry for - the way people were carrying on inside, there wouldn't be much on the shelves for them by the time they got in, I bet!

We also have an Iceland on our street, and people had started gathering outside for it, half an hour before it was due to open. It's just crazy. I'm hopeful that things were particularly bad because it's the weekend, and maybe if I try during the week (my office have us wfh until further notice, so might venture out on my lunchbreak) it might be a bit calmer - but if this is the future, it's not very nice, and I really feel for vulnerable people who can't get what they need because the panic buyers are grabbing armfuls of everything instead of just taking what they actually need...

AmelieTaylor · 15/03/2020 14:31

Hospital I work in had 16 bottles of alcohol hand wash ripped off end of beds....this was oncology ward ....what is wrong with people, I despair

That’s utterly disgraceful.

Balkinfly · 15/03/2020 14:31

Nobody needs three packs of 15 eggs.

Erm they do if they run a cafe Hmm

AmelieTaylor · 15/03/2020 14:33

@MacronsPensWiper

  • Anyone who can tweet, can we start tweeting supermarket to please give elderly small pritoy to shop. There are so many things, very inconsequential to them they could've doing to support elderly shoppers n.. Open half and hour early for them?. Hold stuff back, have a staff member shop in store for them.. Etc*

I don’t tweet, but that would be a great thing for the supermarkets to do. I hope tweeters can get the message through to the CEI’s if supermarkets.

Ortega · 15/03/2020 14:33

Does anyone know if this is affective I wonder?

That would depend on what you are trying to achieve by it.

Figgygal · 15/03/2020 14:34

Also went out this morning couldn’t get parked at the giant Tesco at 9.45 15 minutes before it even opened so went to local Morrison’s got one of the few Last spaces in the car park.
Was like bloody Christmas self service tills were queued back down the aisles

Only went in for bread and milk which was just as well
