Just witnessed the future in Asda car park!

Just witnessed an elderly lady telling a man in a face mask that "he should be staying at home if he has it"

He then told her that he didn't have it and it was a precaution.

He sounded like he was Italian so she shouted "I bet you have been to Italy"

He then flew into a tirade shouting that she should be self isolating as she was over 70 - and to quote him "you're all going to F**ing die if you don't!

As I walked away they were still screaming at each other from their cars!

Is this the future! We will all be turning on each other!

No anarchy here.
This morning the 8 mums in our cul-de-sac have (via WhatsApp) shared out responsibility and contacted the 4 elderly folk in our street to arrange to collect their shopping lists/prescriptions and add them to their weekly shop.
People are letting others know when they have grocery deliveries booked in case they want to add anything.

We were in Costco yesterday and there was no aggression but it was definitely carnage. The queue was going the entire length of the store.
Every single person had bulk packs of 72 loo rolls several bags of pasta.
There were lots of abandoned trollies as people were obviously not wanting to stand in a germy queue!

One abandoned trolley had 5 rolls of cling film. 72 loo rolls and 5 bottles of bleach!

One can only imagine how sterile their house would be all wrapped in cling film!

It's lush to hear that some communities are standing together x

As if the whole situation isn't miserable enough. People never fail to disappoint.

WhereDoesThisToiletGo · 15/03/2020 14:00

I bought a 12 pack of loo rolls last week and was about to pop a couple in the food bank then thought..." ! bet some arse will help themselves to those" rather than them going to someone in proper need

Pebbles574 · 15/03/2020 14:00

oh, cross-posted Mintychoc1 Smile

The BBQ thing makes sense though - better to socialise out in the open air than a confined space...

JustVisiting9 · 15/03/2020 14:02

I got sworn at for "wasting" tins of soup.

I was "wasting" them by putting them in the food bank box (and this happened because I really only wanted two tins, but all the single tins had been bought by other people so I had to buy a 6 pack).

My friend who works for Lidl told me their store has taken more money in the last week than in the week before Christmas. As soon as they put stuff on the shelves it's bought - and not just the obvious things like soap and loo roll; they had someone buy the entire stock of marmalade!

itsgettingweird · 15/03/2020 14:02

I coughed once in Aldi today. For a whole 2 seconds. Into a tissue in then pocketed.

The looks I got you'd have thought I'd been spraying CV around from a hosepipe and infecting the nation.

I have hay fever. This is my affected time of year. I fear the next 6 weeks I'll have to develop a thick skin against stares!

1forsorrow · 15/03/2020 14:03

Why not have a fun bbq of your loved ones Just at the moment that is tempting. I mean I haven't stockpiled, didn't go mad when I saw toilet rolls, only have the usual spare bag of pasta and rice in the cupboard but the little swines have got at my chocolate stash. How could a healthy teenage boy do that to his granny?

Bezalelle · 15/03/2020 14:04

This is the obvious result of generations of capitalism.

You want a government that cares and citizens who give a shit about each other? That's socialism. Nobody wanted it. So tough shit.

TripTrappingOverMyBridge · 15/03/2020 14:05

I'm wondering where some of you live. Everyone is behaving completely normally here. Shops have normal supplies of things, queues are no longer or shorter than normal, and everyone is behaving themselves. Confused

LightAsTheBreeze · 15/03/2020 14:07

Our large Waitrose was quite orderly this morning, lots of gaps on shelves, I think the early birds had had a lot of stuff, but I managed to get quite a bit, it was a bit like Christmas really, I am going to totally avoid Asda for the foreseeable future as the carpark is like a race track at the best of times before even getting into the shop

Alice02132354 · 15/03/2020 14:08

Let's face it. She shouldn't have started it and she should be at home because she will ultimately pay the price.
Let's stay sane.

If I'm crossing the road and someone is speeding, it makes sense for me to protect myself and jump out of the way rather than stand in front of him and say well, you're speeding!
I don't think old people get the gravity of the situation they're in.

blueruin · 15/03/2020 14:08

People in my borough have set up a mutual aid Facebook group and WhatsApp chats, very well organised, offering help to those who are unwell, elderly, and/or self-isolating.

Helpwithaversion · 15/03/2020 14:09

all these who are going stockpiling and fighting etc shouting at each other do they realise how they are probably contributing to the spread by having so many in a confined place and having physical contact/shouting etc ??!! Are they mad !

FlamingoAndJohn · 15/03/2020 14:10

I popped into Aldi for a couple of bits today and it was fine. No busier than normal. The tins were severely depleted as was the toilet roll.

Ortega · 15/03/2020 14:10

See we had aldi drama.

And a facebook group that is mobilised to help out. The local food bank is doing well and set up with volunteers to deliver food.

I dont think anywhere is all good or all bad.

Can I ask why people are going out with face masks on, though? Surely that's going to stress people out more?

AnneOfTeenFables · 15/03/2020 14:11

Fev I'm in Scotland. It might be the difference between areas where there is a sense of community and where some families will have lived here for years versus areas where people don't see their neighbours, don't expect to see their fellow shoppers again and don't have any sense of commonality with them?
I know my local facebook pages are dividing up the area into streets with someone taking responsibility for lettering all their neighbours to see if they need to check in if self-isolating, if they want shopping dropped at the door, etc. In general, there's a strong sense of community spirit.

ApplesAndCheese · 15/03/2020 14:11

DP and I went to our local Tesco Extra first thing - queue to get in was half-way around the car park by the time the doors opened.

It was insanely busy - far worse than Christmas - but generally good-natured. I did see a staff member take a pack of loo rolls out of a woman's trolley and tell her 'one pack per person only', but there wasn't any aggro, thank goodness.

People were taking entire trays of eg: soup etc, which is incredibly selfish, and lots of the shelves were bare or poorly stocked, even first thing on Sunday morning. There were also new-looking photocopied signs on each till asking customers to treat staff with respect Sad

Despite the ok atmosphere I did say to dp that I didn't feel it would last long - give it another couple of weeks and the veneer will be well and truly off I reckon.

ArkAtEee · 15/03/2020 14:12

I went into the Coop late yesterday. Not many people there, some shelf gaps but still had a few loo rolls and bags of pasta etc. They had put in place '1 only' restrictions on some items and the lady ahead of me had to give back one of her long life milks, but everyone fine about it.

Alsohuman · 15/03/2020 14:13

I don't think old people get the gravity of the situation they're in

Yeah, we do, we just know we’re going to die soon anyway.

Ortega · 15/03/2020 14:13

How does the one pack of toilet rolls work if you are supporting a neighbour, in isolation and both need toilet roll?

Get a pack and split it?

Oh also, another positive, our aldi has massively reduced the price of loo roll, while limiting how much you can buy. Good to see them not taking the piss.

Tootletum · 15/03/2020 14:13

Sadly I don't think humanity has ever come together at times of infectious disease outbreaks. It's not the same as war - our bodies are each other enemies. Was reading an article about what it was like in the great plague. Parents abandoned their children.

Thinkingabout1t · 15/03/2020 14:16

Crunchymum I hope that rude Fellow’s trolley overturns and spills his precious shopping in a muddy puddle. Have a Brew

foxy86 · 15/03/2020 14:17

We went to the local Morrisons around 10.30 this morning, looked at queues for self serve and walked back out. I’ve never seen it as busy, not even at Christmas. They were queuing to get in the car park which never happens.
