Just witnessed the future in Asda car park!

Just witnessed an elderly lady telling a man in a face mask that "he should be staying at home if he has it"

He then told her that he didn't have it and it was a precaution.

He sounded like he was Italian so she shouted "I bet you have been to Italy"

He then flew into a tirade shouting that she should be self isolating as she was over 70 - and to quote him "you're all going to F**ing die if you don't!

As I walked away they were still screaming at each other from their cars!

Is this the future! We will all be turning on each other!

You must be in my neck of the woods Anne!

Alsohuman · 15/03/2020 13:49

This feels really odd. I was in Sainsbury’s yesterday and people were being really nice to each other. I scored a bag of pasta and the woman behind me at the checkout had loo rolls, we joked about being mugged in the car park. Ten minutes later the M&S food hall was really good humoured too.

Timetogiveupnow · 15/03/2020 13:50

We went to tesco before ten this morning and it was packed, went for a disabled spot (ds uses a wheelchair sometimes and needed it today, he has a blue badge) and other people were using them without badges. We bought veggie mince, cat food and wine so the cats and I are OK. Also bought tins for the food bank which like pp said earlier was overflowing.

Skeeter2020 · 15/03/2020 13:50

@Crunchymum that's disgusting - hope you're ok

Irial · 15/03/2020 13:51

I’m not as scared of the virus as I am the breakdown of civilised society.

this

Pinkarsedfly · 15/03/2020 13:51

daisychain01 no need to read books, I’ve lived it. The attitude Thatcher imbued has never gone away. Blair was no socialist.

1forsorrow · 15/03/2020 13:51

I was in Sainsbury's this morning and it was really busy, bit like Christmas but everyone was OK, no fighting or anything. The people on the tills were having a laugh with people about it.

GnomeDePlume · 15/03/2020 13:51

Why not have a fun bbq of your loved ones

Fev11 · 15/03/2020 13:51

I wonder if it's South East vs the provinces?

FairyBunnyAgain · 15/03/2020 13:52

I went to the bun fight that is my local Tesco this morning, arrived around 40 minutes after opening. The car park was gridlocked (it is poorly designed at the best of times) and everyone looked frustrated, pushing out, sounding horns etc.
Walked in to people with piled up trolleys queuing down the aisles to pay.
I mainly wanted fresh food for this week as I couldn’t have my usual delivery slot and now DC has returned early from uni I need extra food.
Was able to get everything I wanted and actually thought everyone was being quite polite, asking to move trolleys when they were in the way, passing comment on the lack of basic items etc. There were of course no toilet rolls, or antibacterial products, nor pasta. There must have been when it opened as we saw people with multiple items in their trolleys but all gone within 30 minutes, what hope have the elderly got?

By the time we were done the tills were down to only a couple of people wait, so more reasonable, charring to the checkout guy, he said it was like Christmas but without the happiness. But it isn’t really as at christmas the store is always overflowing with the products we want to buy (tInned sweets and Brussels) and they have enough staff including people in the car park to mange the traffic.

TeaAndDarkToast · 15/03/2020 13:52

@Crunchymum Flowers Brew

Roselilly36 · 15/03/2020 13:52

@Pinkarsedfly, totally right - more sharp elbows than blitz spirit

Irial · 15/03/2020 13:52

Anyone who can tweet, can we start tweeting supermarket to please give elderly small pritoy to shop.

This is not going to work - the only thing that will work is if people calm the fuck down! No Karen you don't needs 145 toilet and 20kilos of pasta....

handslikecowstits · 15/03/2020 13:53

Just been to local Aldi (bought mushrooms and coffee FWIW). Checkout assistant said people had been fighting in the store this morning.

Sweet Jesus!

Mrhodgeymaheg · 15/03/2020 13:53

My other half wore a face mask in supermarket today (not a medical grade one that doctors wear, just wore what we had which is better than nothing) and a guy ranted at him that they don't work and gave him a stare. The supermarkets were rammed, so ideal time to wear one really. He had a trolley full of booze and little else and proudly proclaimed how he just got back from Tenerife. He was in his 60's and looked rather ruddy in complexion,so probably a bit of a drinker. No doubt he will expect to be first in the queue for treatment and would expect free food parcels dropped at his door if he got ill, and will complain when it doesn't materialise. Sadly, I think those who are most dismissive are the ones who will expect to be bailed out by others and will find that those who have prepared and tried to mitigate the risks will be unwilling to help them.

cyclingmad · 15/03/2020 13:54

Well my local big Tesco's was packed out and it was only 11am, definitely some people getting quite irritated at trolleys being whacked into them by accident. Lots of empty aisles everywhere.

Went along to M&S to get some croissants and it's like a different world, no panic buying shelves fully stocked obv no loo roll though. Otherwise you would never have known

TeaAndDarkToast · 15/03/2020 13:54

@Pinkarsedfly I agree

Sunshinesky1981 · 15/03/2020 13:54

I did put this on another thread, but I think this is going to get worse. But I hate to think what things could be like in the USA if they are faced with food/medical shortages. They dont have the same safety nets as it is, and there is a massive amount of guns in the US, legal or not. I can honestly see rioting and shootings. Either muggings or legal gun owners shooting as they feel they are protecting their property

choc71 · 15/03/2020 13:55

Everyone in Lidl was really nice to each other this morning, totally different to what I'd expected. No panic buying, fully stocked shelves as well.

WorraLiberty · 15/03/2020 13:55

The Italian man actually shouted "You should be self isolating because you're over 70"?

Fleetheart · 15/03/2020 13:55

It’s like Lord of the Flies. Crazy panicking is infectious and infects us all.

BlindAssassin1 · 15/03/2020 13:56

What was hilarious was the stack of bbq coals and those instant bbqs at the entrance. Either they know more than us and the power grid is going to collapse

Nah, its been lurking in the back since last summer; its probably got dust on, and they needed to fill a space at the front end. I bet its been sold in the next couple of days.

Mrhodgeymaheg · 15/03/2020 13:56

OH reported that the only thing out of stock were bog roll and paracetamol. Canned good were low, but no sign of panic buying in the extreme sense. There have been a lot of silent preppers over the last 6 weeks. It could be a lot worse if we were all panic buying.

Oakmaiden · 15/03/2020 13:57

There is a sign up at the entrance to our local Tesco saying that abusive or aggressive behaviour towards their staff would not be tolerated.

It made me wonder if this was bringing out the worst in people.

(And there were enormous gaps in all section of the shop. Surely at some point people will say - "I have now got a stockpile of 150 rolls of toilet roll and 742 bags of rice and pasta. I think I can stop buying now."?

Mintychoc1 · 15/03/2020 13:57

On a more positive note, our village and the adjacent one have set up a WhatsApp group for people to volunteer to help locals who can’t get out for whatever reason. There are loads of volunteers , everyone wants to help.
