Just witnessed the future in Asda car park!

Just witnessed an elderly lady telling a man in a face mask that "he should be staying at home if he has it"

He then told her that he didn't have it and it was a precaution.

He sounded like he was Italian so she shouted "I bet you have been to Italy"

He then flew into a tirade shouting that she should be self isolating as she was over 70 - and to quote him "you're all going to F**ing die if you don't!

As I walked away they were still screaming at each other from their cars!

Is this the future! We will all be turning on each other!

So far,I haven 't come across this behaviour but I have had friends post on Face book about what is happening. But that was in Leicester. I haven't seen it in my home town of Lutterworth or nearby Rugby.

glennamy · 16/03/2020 20:15

It's selfish, ignorant greedy people causing issues... Plenty of food to go around but you have idiots everywhere... I would say shame on them all but they wouldn't know what the word means...

onegirlandherdog · 16/03/2020 20:38

You need to go online and find the Mutual Aid groups. People are setting local groups to organise helping vulnerable ppl. The assholes stick out, but there's thousands of people organising solidarity groups too. I've been invited to an online meditation - not my cup of tea but nice to be asked! Always look for the helpers, right?

I bought a 6 pack loo roll in Aldi on Saturday and a chicken. Back today for ice cream, cake and cereal. Empty shelves, no pasta, no soap etc but I've already got those as tend to buy multi pack of bar soaps and always got different pasta in (spaghetti/penne/bow) so not to worried. There were some with trolleys full of stuff and staff in Aldi were telling customer max 4 of most items. I work in retail, there are always arses who shout their mouths off even when things are "normal" I'm too old to put up with it now so just refuse to deal with them with full support of business owner.Smile

Bluewavescrashing · 16/03/2020 20:48

It's like black Friday and Christmas eve x 1000.

Bluewavescrashing · 16/03/2020 20:50

People are generally very spoilt in being able to get exactly what they want, when they want it. Limit a few items and the country goes mad. Most people are overweight anyway and could do with a bit of self imposed rationing (me included!).

Vicbarbarkley · 16/03/2020 21:02

It was my mums funeral last Wednesday. Everything had gone to Hell in a handbasket leading up to it, and I actually made myself do a shop on Friday morning.
Amongst other stuff, I needed some loo roll, just the normal 9 pack I would always buy, but there was one - seriously ONE pack left in the toilet roll aisle, so I bought it.

It was a Kleenex 24 pack.

It was commented on whilst I was doing the rest of the shop, by the check out woman, by the man in the car next to me in the car park and, unbelievably by viewers looking around my house today (i havent opened the pack yet).

Never has so much angst been felt over a pack of loo rolls.

I feel as though I need to continuously explain how i came by them.......🤐

Zampa · 16/03/2020 21:09

The loo roll aisle in my local Tesco Extra was empty today apart from two copies of The Sun Grin

SootBusters · 16/03/2020 21:18

The problem is common sense isn't that common! Stupidity is more readily available mindset than intelligence.

Wauden · 16/03/2020 21:39

In the Co Op today, plenty of fresh food, but reduced number of tins and of course no big rolls nor hand sanitiser.

There was a trolley with goods waiting to go onto the shelves and a man and I were chatting near it. I spotted anti bac hand wash and surprisingly for me, bought it, as I only use soap and water.

There were five in the pack, so we took the plastic off (it was waiting to be opened) and I bought one, thinking that it would be selfish to take more as there were only five.
The man took the remaining others and he said that two were for his elderly neighbour.

Rosebel · 16/03/2020 21:39

I work in retail and feel like I've seen it all. I came home from work today and cried because it was so awful. It was horrible customers screaming abuse at me, customers fighting each other, huge queues.
Oh well my children are in self isolation now so at least I get 14 days rest but no one seems to care about anyone else and it's sad.

Pawsandnoses · 16/03/2020 21:40

@NanSlayer I'm always amused at 'during the war' statements. Unless someone is in their 90's they couldn't have much recollection. Possibly some rationing.

MarshaBradyo · 16/03/2020 21:40

Oh Rosebel that is awful. Are you in a big supermarket?

Wauden · 16/03/2020 21:47

It is always more civilised in M&S!

Fedupandpoor · 16/03/2020 21:49

Sainsbury's in Bromley was bare yesterday! No fresh meat, tinned goods, packets, cleaning products or tissue of any kind!

People were lovely and friendly though, walking around and commenting on the looting. Two elderly men (jokingly) offered to fight each other for the last pack of frozen scampi!

CaptainNelson · 16/03/2020 22:11

I would just like to say, it is not like LOTF. They commit murder, and it's not for survival, it's because they become, essentially, hysterical (although because they're all boys, no-one ever calls them hysterical). I mean, people have frankly gone mad, except, apparently, for everyone on Mumsnet Halo

Rosebel · 16/03/2020 22:12

Yes huge supermarket. Security looked like they'd had enough by 9 o clock.

Grandmi · 16/03/2020 22:19

I actually witnessed a really kind act today in our local Sainsbury’s. An old lady was very distressed because there wasn’t any soap/ hand wash and a guy reached into his jacket pocket and gave her a small bottle of handsanitiser ! Restored my faith in human nature.

LuxLuxLux84 · 16/03/2020 22:25

I was depressed by how little was in the food bank box when I went up to put a few bits in today- I live in a fairly affluent area with pockets of real deprivation.

ellyeth · 17/03/2020 00:11

This isn't the same as a war, and I think the comparison is meaningless. Our situation now is that people are being told to avoid each other, not to gather together and offer each other comfort and cheer (despite the horrors of the war, some people have fond memories of huddling up together in the underground during air raids - of songs sung and humour used to keep fear at bay. The requirement now is to keep your distance from everyone.

Just the other day, there was a rather odd reluctance to ban mass indoor gatherings, but now we have gone completely the other way, with even small groups being discouraged - and perhaps at some point prohibited. It may well be necessary but it isn't conducive to a feeling of togetherness and community spirit. Also, people can become aggressive when they are in a crisis situation over which they have minimal control, leaving them frightened and stressed.

Having said that, there are also many examples of individuals and groups offering help and support, despite the fact that we have over the past few years been increasingly encouraged to "look after number 1" and to view other people's misfortunes as their own fault.

ALongHardWinter · 17/03/2020 00:56

Agree with Haworthia. I'm not so much scared of the virus, but the way society is turning on each other. I am disabled and feel so vulnerable when I go in shops. I get barged and pushed and shoved because I can't move out of people's way quickly enough. It's terrifying.

ALongHardWinter · 17/03/2020 01:00

My Dd gave me some toilet rolls today as I couldn't find any anywhere, been trying for the last week. I buried them at the bottom of my shopping trolley before setting off home as I was genuinely concerned someone might try to mug me for them.

ALongHardWinter · 17/03/2020 01:04

People are buying baby milk formula to put in drinks?! OMFG I've heard it all now.

sadatchristmas1 · 17/03/2020 01:08

I work in retail, on the whole most customers are polite and enjoy a chat and joke about the situation. We do have a lot of moaning about things being out of stock. I have however had numerous arguments about the 2 pack limit for painkillers. People can be so entitled and they believe the rules don't apply to them. I've been shouted at, insulted and threatened. All over a 30p box of paracetamol. I understand people are worried and stressed I am too, I just wish people would think about how their behaviour is having an effect on everyone else.

NotTerfNorCis · 17/03/2020 08:19

Where I live a community group has been set up and people are rushing in eager to help.
