Because people are scared that if they start WFH/going off sick for a week for a cough, they'll look like a slacker. We also don't get paid sick leave if in the first 6 months of employment. This is the travel industry, our jobs are already very precarious atm!

BeijingBikini · 15/03/2020 17:07

Lots of people have said that if they call in sick for a cough the day after they're told to stay off for a cough, they'll look like a pisstaker. Presentee-ism is rife.

todayisnottuesday · 15/03/2020 17:07

If all we see is rising deaths it will inspire panic because there is no wider context or it will result in apathy. We need a consistent measure and overall view of what is happening.

Agree. We need transparency, we are not getting that. I do wonder if the lack of testing seems to be to avoid panic at the numbers, and sod all to do with any herd immunity theory. Not everyone seems to see that if so, the death rate will start speaking for itself - that is what I have my eye on here, not confirmed cases.

MarshaBradyo · 15/03/2020 17:09

Fucking hell (apols) that’s the one thing they have said. And still.

Dh still at work but email sent saying if you have a slight cough etc DO NOT COME IN

MacronsPensWiper · 15/03/2020 17:09

Bejing I agree.

And where I work I'm surrounded too by coughing and spluttering.

MarshaBradyo · 15/03/2020 17:10

Ridiculous

Ok that is spreading it. Management are not following clear govt advice.

Angryrant55 · 15/03/2020 17:11

I think the sad death of the 59 year old and his partner revealing it will help - because he is young and a face not a statistic.

MacronsPensWiper · 15/03/2020 17:11

It's false sense of security anyway because you shed the virus before you come down.

It's why we need to stop the bloody spread as they have in other countries.

I just despair!... My heart is so so sunk.

MacronsPensWiper · 15/03/2020 17:12

Marsha, people spread it before they know they have it anyway.

It's all a flalasy

MarshaBradyo · 15/03/2020 17:12

Testing won’t stop that shedding before symptoms anyway.

Only China style would.

BREAKING: Italy reports 3,590 new cases and 368 new deaths, raising total to 24,747 cases and 1,809 dead

picklemewalnuts · 15/03/2020 17:12

Back to numbers again,

Out of the potential 500,000 deaths due to CV, how many are statistically likely to have dies this year anyway? I'm not thinking about individuals we know and love, but data.

If ~500k people die per year, and as a society we can cope with those figures (individual grief apart), how many of that number will now be transferred across to the CV figures?

Does anyone see what I mean?

Angryrant55 · 15/03/2020 17:13

BNO Newsroom - 'BREAKING: Italy reports 3,590 new cases and 368 new deaths, raising total to 24,747 cases and 1,809 dead.'

Surge in italy.
And the real cases are probably 75k - 125k.

BeijingBikini · 15/03/2020 17:13

The management are fine with people staying off, but people are naturally anxious about their jobs and perception of their work ethic.

Fifieatsflowers · 15/03/2020 17:15

@BeijingBikini Agreed. South Korea, Australia and Germany all have drive-thru testing so why cant we offer that? Something needs to be done.

Janemarpling · 15/03/2020 17:15

Pickle know what you mean.

That man had been on holiday and ' looked fine' not the withered old man that has under lying health conditions .

Angryrant55 · 15/03/2020 17:16

Bob Hardt -'Governor Cuomo is calling on New York bars and restaurants and gyms to voluntarily close down. “If nobody does it, then we can take more action.” '

RandomlyChosenName · 15/03/2020 17:16

The other thing to consider is that tourist attractions that need tourists spending money will NOT shut down if one of their staff has Coronavirus. They cannot/ will not harm the business.

The staff member who is confirmed and any others showing symptoms will self isolate (hopefully) but their colleagues who they breathed on the day before will still go to work to protect the company’s reputation. By staying open, the public don’t know about the illnesses and will continue to come. And will therefore be infected.

I hope that makes sense.

OldQueen1969 · 15/03/2020 17:17

@todayisnottuesday

Indeed. I think herd immunity theory was tossed out because most people have a vague understanding of it and it is a bit of a red herring - it doesn't really apply in this situation at this stage, and that assessment can't be made until we're on a downward trajectory and then see if it comes in waves and if significant numbers are re-infected.

Everything seems like a gamble. I don't want to see panic and civil unrest but the rumblings are starting and I suspect alot of people are feeling very unstable in most aspects of life right now.

buttonmoonb4tea · 15/03/2020 17:19

Why no drive-thru testing nationwide? Apparently there's one hospital currently doing that, surely if they are capable then all hospitals should be? Why no petition for that?

This

Angryrant55 · 15/03/2020 17:20

Sky News Breaking - 'Italian officials say deaths from the Covid-19 pandemic has risen to 1,809 from 1,441 with the total number of cases rising to 24,747 from 21,157.'

Cam77 · 15/03/2020 17:20

Problem is, we have a very loose understanding of the actual death rate. The government’s plan (over 70s isolate for four months, everyone else go and out and get the virus) could easily see 200,000 die over the next six months. That’s assuming that the vast majority of over 70s cam effectively isolate themselves in what will be a plague land. That’s versus 3,000 in China.

Whether it’s the best strategy available now (after all the dithering and lost opportunities) is debatable. But I think it’s fair to say that this has exposed a massive hole in European/Western models of governance. We dithered and delayed and now we face the consequences.

MarshaBradyo · 15/03/2020 17:21

I have asked this a few times but yet to know and I am genuinely interested.

If we are doing it the wrong way with the herd immunity narrative then what percentage of people in Spain, Italy, France do you think will get it?

Merkel says 70% even though Germany are doing better than us.

What does anyone who thinks U.K. us doing nothing and letting us all get it think?

danni0509 · 15/03/2020 17:21

I wouldn't be surprised if they aren't revealing the true death rate or soon plan not too.

Do not trust this country at all..

Widget123 · 15/03/2020 17:22

But let’s be honest most people if they get the symptoms will panic and be left with no option but to stroll into their nearest a&e?? So surely leaving people no other option is going to put way may pressure on the nhs and cause a lot more staff getting sick?!
