It is hard so say regarding the comparative death rate. Until yesterday it was very much slower. It seems to be picking up - but could be a statistical blip. We will need more data to tell for sure.

oneteen · 15/03/2020 16:37

The people going into hospital now are getting decent care but dying... Therefore surely we need to now lock down to stop more people getting the virus than need be..

Derbygerbil · 15/03/2020 16:37

I understand the no testing so as not to waste resource etc but surely NHS workers need to know if they are at risk of passing on?

But the Government’s strategy is for people to pass it on, just to the right people (ie not elderly or vulnerable)... How will we get herd immunity if we don’t?

MarshaBradyo · 15/03/2020 16:38

OldQueen they are testing in hospitals so not no tests. 10000 a day. What numbers are other countries doing a day?

Oakmaiden · 15/03/2020 16:38

@KeepOnKeepingOnAgainandAgain I think it means that the Gvt does not release comprehensive data.

Lack of transparency. Oh the irony for those who criticised China in the early days...

Derbygerbil · 15/03/2020 16:39

Once the elderly are in isolation, I’m guessing there’s little point in the hand-washing messages. The Government are banking on 2 million of us getting it per week!

MarshaBradyo · 15/03/2020 16:41

The govt are in the trenches, the frontline too. We don’t need to see the detailed info huw does that change anything for us? The modellers will get what they need.

The jumping death rate will scare enough people into doing what they need to if people are worried others will be blasé.

mrshoho · 15/03/2020 16:41

What we should be asking is how many of those confirmed cases are inpatients in hospitals who were in there for other medical reasons? Is the virus spreading throughout our hospitals? Are medical staff adequately protected? It may not come to light until our medical staff start becoming ill in big numbers.

Fifieatsflowers · 15/03/2020 16:41

Why no drive-thru testing nationwide? Apparently there's one hospital currently doing that, surely if they are capable then all hospitals should be? Why no petition for that?

RandomlyChosenName · 15/03/2020 16:42

We really need some communication from the government this evening.

Sunshineand · 15/03/2020 16:43

DP visited his mum today, when we'd already agreed we'd avoid her for two weeks as the place she works closed last week due to a confirmed case. He said ' don't worry, as soon as I walked in I washed my hands'. Hmm

OldQueen1969 · 15/03/2020 16:44

Errr @MarshaBradyo

They are only testing those admitted to hospital with the right symptoms, not those attending hospital. It's nowhere near 10,000 tests, I believe the latest figure was around 2,500. Tests are only being carried out on the worst cases. Given the different effects of the virus on different people at different times, nowhere near enough data is being gathered in refernce to our overall population figures.

MarshaBradyo · 15/03/2020 16:44

The govt doesn’t have to put out detailed info for people to pore over.

It has to say again and again wash your hands. Self isolate.
And next one when it happens.

Simple clear repetitive. That’s it.

CricketCrocket · 15/03/2020 16:45

Please could someone link to where they can see we’re two weeks behind italy with our number of deaths?

MarshaBradyo · 15/03/2020 16:45

Honestly you’re losing what’s key. I mean I know people are particularly keen on numbers here but it’s not for us.

picklemewalnuts · 15/03/2020 16:46

Derby, they still want us to get it really slowly though!

Basically even if only the basically healthy get it, there isn't enough healthcare available. We need it to be only the healthy, and not all at the same time.

From some posts I've seen, it's a bit calmer in the north, numbers wise. Hopefully there is more capacity in some areas.

fedup21 · 15/03/2020 16:46

@RandomlyChosenName

I completely agree. These screenshots show that Keir Starmer has been suggesting daily updates from a key figure from the gov which is what is needed. Plus a stop of leaks to the press.

I saw upthread some notes about the situation in the US, suggesting that we might be facing some weird kind of anarchy and guns.

I just wanted to comment before I get back to catching up on the thread that my experience so far in our little part of Virginia is completely different. Yes, we have some shops selling out, but we also have lots and lots of people looking out for neighbors. Our schools are closed for 2 weeks, so parents are volunteering to go in and pack breakfasts and lunches for kids who are potentially without regular food. These are distributed daily at each school. People are delivering food in large amounts to food banks and kid backpack schemes. People are reaching out to others who may not have enough or the means to go out. Neighbors are talking to each other from across the street and catching up on how things are going. Local yoga studios are live streaming yoga classes and all our schools are providing ideas on how to keep the kids busy and entertained.

One of my colleagues was exposed to the Brazilian ambassador (who was diagnosed on Friday), so our boss let us all know asap. I subsequently informed the people I have spent time with since then, although neither my colleague or I are exhibiting any symptoms. I have stopped my son from visiting his girlfriend, as she is very much in the at risk group. Everybody has reacted calmly.

I am not suggesting that we are not having problems and I know we will have challenges ahead, but stop believing the daily mail crap about how Americans behave, please. Our local governments - whether we like them or not - seem to be taking decisive actions and people are generally acting responsibly.

SpokeTooSoon · 15/03/2020 16:48

I agree. People don’t need the fine details. Give the layman complex information and they start to make specific choices based on their own personal risk factor.

This is not a helpful approach. Isolate the elderly and wash your bloody hands. That’s all you need to know really. Limit large gatherings.

Angryrant55 · 15/03/2020 16:49

Sky News Breaking - 'A 59-year-old man who died after testing positive for Covid-19 has been named by his wife as Nick Matthews from Bristol who had underlying health conditions.'

I am sick of the news saying that as if to say - they were on the way out anyway.

yoloPenguinsEatfish · 15/03/2020 16:49

Basically, we, our children and our elderlies are cannon fodder in this.

Not enough testing so no accurate numbers.

Not allowed to ring 111 with symptoms, use online checker instead - no records. If in doubt, self-isolate and take paracetamol.

If struggling to breathe (like mittens) then you may or may not get seen depending on who you call and how long the waiting time is and what the situation is in your local hospital.

We are sleepwalking to disaster. And where is our PM? probably pram-shopping for the new baby.

Exochord · 15/03/2020 16:49

There needs to be a vote of no confidence in Boris. Where the hell is he? He should be on the tv making announcements every single day.

fedup21 · 15/03/2020 16:50

This is not a helpful approach. Isolate the elderly and wash your bloody hands. That’s all you need to know really. Limit large gatherings.

When our country are doing the polar opposite of every other nearby country and people are just being expected to carry on as normal, catch it and see how they go, it is completely understand that people want information.

MarshaBradyo · 15/03/2020 16:50

God no not a bloody vote of no confidence.

peridito · 15/03/2020 16:50

spamm thanks for posting .That's v heartening .It's easy to forget in all this how many people are basically good and kind .
