Omg. The next step in the strategy. And if we all stick together it may work

Next step in UK strategy. Lock down all the over 70s (and other immunocompromised - kids / adults) for 4 months. Lock them down. Then make it illegal to close schools. That means we gain immunity to the virus as a population and keeps the beds open for the unusual cases that are not foreseen.

Also it's not me suggesting the approach, its the WHO, the vast majority of international experts and the governments of most European countries.

nellodee has been providing some really good data on this. I notice this is lacking from the proponents of the British approach.

MarshaBradyo · 15/03/2020 18:51

Sakura we are in unchartered waters for everyone.

I am not convinced what the U.K. is doing isn’t a good plan.

Slow down but also completely remove the bulk of the tsunami.

mathanxiety · 15/03/2020 18:53

Ireland will of course revisit the question of the reopening date based on testing results and predictions.

Do you imagine that Ireland has taken decisions about COVID-19 so far without reference to science, and would continue to do so?

MarshaBradyo · 15/03/2020 18:56

No I do not think that.

But I think U.K. has a slightly different approach which is making sense.

But none of us can be sure it’s the first time for everyone in West.

Pluckedpencil · 15/03/2020 18:57

@marshabradyo....I'll just leave this here....www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2020/mar/15/epidemiologist-britain-herd-immunity-coronavirus-covid-19

MarshaBradyo · 15/03/2020 18:58

Tbh about a week ago I was in the same place as everyone else but then saw Italy reactions with flooding the south etc and going to gps and it made me think I’m glad we are including behaviour too.

So everyone saying it’s only hand wash etc. Self isolation at first symptom. I think it’s important.
Then this 70 plus - good.

MarshaBradyo · 15/03/2020 18:59

Thanks not sure if I’ll read it article fatigue maybe later.

Wynona · 15/03/2020 18:59

Hello
I work part time. I wanted to volunteer for the day that I am not working. Does anyone know the best way to do this?
Thank you

PieceOfMaria · 15/03/2020 19:02

Wynona contact Age UK.

Sakura7 · 15/03/2020 19:03

We can learn from the experiences of other countries though Marsha. Anytime someone points this out it's dismissed with "oh China's more authoritation," "South Korea has different demographics", etc. None of that changes the fact that we have evidence of how the virus can be controlled and pushed back. Most countries are taking those learnings and applying them proportionate to their own situations.

If I was British I would wonder why my country was such an outlier. Going against the overwhelming global consensus would not give me confidence.

MarshaBradyo · 15/03/2020 19:06

I know it doesn’t. And I remember waking to Trump’s speech and I posted I was annoyed as we weren’t doing anything. But he was shooting from the hip.

In terms of learning though no one in the West has been early enough.

Taiwan prepared but they started after SARS which meant for us doing it mid Brexit mess with no indication pandemic was coming.

Next time we will know the threat quickly enough and act straight away. Borders will clang shut with reverberation around the world!

Wynona · 15/03/2020 19:10

Thank you PieceofMaria. I just wondered if there was a local council volunteering. My DH and DS all want to help.

Pluckedpencil · 15/03/2020 19:14

@marshabradyo you have article fatigue but I'm guessing you've been reading the wrong articles, as every single epidemiologist has been saying closing borders is an ineffective waste of resource.

And it was partly tongue in cheek but honestly I cba with you.

PieceOfMaria · 15/03/2020 19:43

Wynona I imagine the people who will be hardest hit will be the elderly who are told to self isolate. Many are isolated enough already, so it will be very tough on them to give up what little chance they have to get out and socialise. Maybe Age Concern or a similar local charity will need befrienders for people who would otherwise be alone for long periods. You’d have to keep a bit of a physical distance or maybe just chat on the phone or something? Also offering to get in some shopping etc would be useful.

Wynona · 15/03/2020 19:56

Indeed. pieceofMaria. I don't mind what I do. Walk their dogs, talk, get shopping. Set up Skype for them. I don't mind helping at a local hospital.
Thank you again for the suggestion.

We have no need to ‘wonder’ we KNOW why they’re doing it. Because ‘this isn’t about saving as many lives as possible, it’s about balancing’

It’s about how many lives they’re prepared to sacrifice to try to stop another recession.

I think we are going to get a lot of lives list AND a recession this way.

China gave us the opportunity to
Prepare & we didn’t.

There’s the 65 year old cut off link. I’m not sensationalising anything. Just stating what I’ve seen heard.... you wants the link so there you go

ZombieFan · 15/03/2020 20:23

I think France is trying to achieve herd immunity as well, and Germany. They just aren't shouting it from the rooftops.

Would the thread police 👮🏼‍♀️ just STOP IT

people are allowed THEIR opinion & are allowed to express it how they see fit (as long as they follow MN rules).

Just post your own thoughts & allow others to do the same.

AmelieTaylor · 15/03/2020 21:47

@yakittyyakyak

Do you have a link to an official statement/list/anything which says what’s considered something that makes you ‘at risk’ ‘underlying conditions’ etc. I’m trying to work out what my risk factor is.

Partly to stop me panicking so much, but also because I’d like to help more in the community, but I’m currently too worried that I’ll get it and then be at risk of infecting older family members. I know I wouldn’t be high on the list for a vent if it came to it 😖

Aridane · 15/03/2020 22:07

Hmm

WHzO strongly disagree, regarding such restrictions as worse than ineffective
