We have just had a discussion here that what if it was children being severely affected like the elderly are. How different everything would be. I have a young child and a young adult child and I am certain they will be ok. It just seems so inhumane we are hanging our elderly and infirm out to dry.

I love the media story of China sending a plane full of medical staff and equipment, including ventilators to help Italy. Star

Sorry I had to post it.

BBC's Anna Holligan - 'However, as children and partners of those infected mostly aren’t being tested in the Netherlands now, very hard to know how much of an accurate reflection these figures offer.'

SansaSnark · 14/03/2020 13:57

The number of coronavirus cases in the Netherlands has risen by 155 to 959, with two further deaths.

Sad news from the Netherlands.

The Mirror - 'Deadly coronavirus is believed to have claimed its 12th victim in the UK after an 88-year-old grandfather died in hospital last night.

The man passed away at North Manchester General Hospital, his family has confirmed.'

SansaSnark · 14/03/2020 13:59

@NellyGrace AFIAK there hasn't been- my school is pushing the "wash your hands" message and staff did go home with coughs on Friday. There are a few very vulnerable students who are working in our welfare hub, so relatively isolated from the main school population.

But I'm not aware of any specific advice regarding vulnerable students, and IMO there should be. If I had a teenage child who would be more vulnerable, I would be keeping them off school now.

@Mohster - there was a very good thread on Twitter the other day by a Professor of Chemistry saying that actually soap does have a specific effect to inactivate the virus:

twitter.com/PalliThordarson/status/1236549305189597189

In essence it dissolves the fat membrane keeping the virus together, so it falls apart.

Alcohol does this too, but soap does it better.

BBC Sport - 'Japan Prime Minister Shinzo Abe said the Tokyo Olympic Games will go ahead as planned in July, despite coronavirus concerns resulting in the postponement of sporting events.

Abe added the International Olympic Committee (IOC) will have the final decision whether Tokyo 2020 goes ahead.

"We will overcome the spread of the infection and host the Olympics without problem, as planned," Abe said.'

Cases in Wales are rising dramatically. In the past 5 days they have risen tenfold (from 6 to 60) - so doubling approx every 36 hours.

Almost certainly due to the targeting of testing rather than the rate of true cases, I would imagine, but still...

buttermilkwaffles · 14/03/2020 14:04

@defthand

Majority of cases in Germany are under 60, they are also further behind the curve compared to Italy and Spain.

SansaSnark · 14/03/2020 14:05

Arlene Foster has said that when schools close they will close for at least 16 weeks.

That's a huge amount of time, even if it's to include the summer holidays. I can't imagine how people will cope with that!

If this is really what they are anticipating, I can see why they are putting off school closures for as long as possible.

Angryrant55 · 14/03/2020 14:06

Giles Sheldrick - 'Breaking: NHS England has just confirmed a further nine patients have died of coronavirus.'

9 deaths in a day.
And still no lock-down or even no travel advice for the vulnerable.

Angryrant55 · 14/03/2020 14:07

I think in germany cases are spreading through the community but in Italy and Spain and here in the uk a lot of the dead are getting infected in hospital.

defthand · 14/03/2020 14:07

@buttermilkwaffles

Thanks for that link, very interesting. Similar situation to South Korea then. I wonder if this mean it initially took hold in German cities (cities have a younger demographic, typically).

nellodee · 14/03/2020 14:08

16 weeks is a curious length though. You would imagine that would include the summer holidays, so that would start on the 11 May. That's surely going to be well after the horse has bolted, though it might coincide with when the last teacher drops. Unless they are considering moving the summer holidays.
