9 deaths just yesterday? Sad

middleager · 14/03/2020 14:11

Ten? Christ.

A reminder of where the threads started for those interested in timelines.

Jordan to close border, suspend passenger flights, and ban public gatherings in effort to stop coronavirus

We are still hanging on here in Switzerland. Schools shut as of Monday but the nurseries are open??? Doesn’t make any sense to me but that’s what they’ve decided to do.
Went to France to do my supermarket shopping yesterday and it was like Xmas eve in terms of stock availability and queues.
Beautiful sunny day which just makes the whole thing feel even stranger.

Angryrant55 · 14/03/2020 14:12

@MurrayTheMonk
Seems so but some of the deaths might be people who died before getting properly diagnosed as they were already so ill it took longer to realise they were infected.

ofwarren · 14/03/2020 14:12

Chief Medical Officer: “I am sorry to confirm 10 further patients who have tested positive for COVID-19 in England have died.

“All 10 individuals were in the at risk groups”
BBC
WTF

@nellodee I agree it's an odd length. 11th May would hit nearly all summer exams as well.

GenevaMaybe · 14/03/2020 14:13

Are we waiting on UK stats for today

Pppppickupapenguin · 14/03/2020 14:13

So the death rate virtually doubled overnight in England.

Cam77 · 14/03/2020 14:13

A few provinces in China are clear of the virus. A few more are almost totally clear. For example, Anhui province - with a similar population and geographical size to the UK:

Around 1000 active cases at its peak - perhaps similar to the UK currently

Deaths 6 (admittedly a tad under the Chinese national average, Hubei excepted)

Current cases 0 (ZERO)

Schools being touted to reopen there in the next couple of week.
Praising China isn’t cool, it’s pragmatic. Our response is non existent. There’s was, since, January, exemplary given the huge challenge and logistical difficulties of a continent sized nation and dozens of cities running into the millions.

The likes of Singapore, S.Korea, Taiwan are merely implementing the lessons painstakingly learned in mainland China. None of this “let’s just let a few thousand die” bullshit.

LittleBoyJuly2020 · 14/03/2020 14:14

Omg 10 more deaths in the UK since yesterday. Breaking news just now

Angryrant55 · 14/03/2020 14:14

The NHS always tells us they were at risk anyway - as if to say well they going to die soonish anyway don't worry if you not already half way out.

Pppppickupapenguin · 14/03/2020 14:14

I don't mean to sound heartless, but I find it interesting how the virus more or less the same lines of infection and death rates no matter which country it's in.

cjt110 · 14/03/2020 14:14

@GenevaMaybe I believe so.

I sadly suspect we will break the + 1,000 mark

JJPC · 14/03/2020 14:16

The NHS always tells us they were at risk anyway - as if to say well they going to die soonish anyway don't worry if you not already half way out.

It’s pretty sickening. My mother is in an at risk group but without the infection isn’t particularly likely to die any time soon. She’s just as much a person, who is loved and valued, as anyone else.

Twasbambam · 14/03/2020 14:16

I'm starting to hate it when they do this.

All 10 individuals were in the at risk groups

I understand they don't want to panic people, but selfish bastards seem to be taking statements like this as a reason to do whatever the hell they want to. Because it will not possibly affect them.

Oakmaiden · 14/03/2020 14:17

@cjt110

That does depend how much testing has been done. The less they do, the lower the rate of increase...

Angryrant55 · 14/03/2020 14:17

Professor Chris Whitty, Chief Medical Officer for England has just said

'The public should know every measure we are taking is seeking to save lives and protect the most vulnerable. Every single one of us has a role to play in achieving this.'

Really.

SansaSnark · 14/03/2020 14:18

At risk can mean something like high blood pressure or diabetes- people who would likely live full and healthy lives usually.

I do feel like some of the reporting on this is callous, like anyone who is older or has a health condition doesn't matter.

Oakmaiden · 14/03/2020 14:18

I wonder what proportion of the population is actually in an at risk group. I would think with just asthma and high blood pressure (ignoring all other risks) the proportion is not insignificant.

fedup21 · 14/03/2020 14:18

The public should know every measure we are taking is seeking to save lives and protect the most vulnerable. Every single one of us has a role to play in achieving this.'

Yep-sacrificing our families as a human medical shield is our role.

ShanghaiDiva · 14/03/2020 14:20

@Cam77
Yes, my city is currently a zero case city.

cjt110 · 14/03/2020 14:20

@Oakmaiden yes of course

justchecking1 · 14/03/2020 14:20

1140 and 21 deaths 🙁

BlackeyedSusan · 14/03/2020 14:20

1,140. Eek. How many more is that?
