I know people who have cancelled for August.

I have until June to decide for my August holiday. Until then I just lose my deposit I think.

If I had to pay now for sooner holiday I would cancel, but that's only because its not a massive amount of money.

I really think the press are being told to publish photos of desolated city centres and public transport which is not the reality.

Told by who? The press do exaggerate sometimes because it helps sell papers.

I am disproportionately concerned about this! Grin

My 14 year old son's BF is self isolating with a high fever (38.5), sneezing and feeling rubbish (no cough). They have sat next to each other in most classes all week.

Should I be worried and what should I do?
Thanks!

Cummings - he is the strong fan of the nudge theory.

Sky News Breaking 'News agency Reuters reports Spain's government will tell its citizens to stay home except to buy food or drugs, go to hospital, go to work or for other emergencies according a draft decree.'

Dd has gone to her job in a pub. All Other bar staff have rung in sick, Dd wasn’t meant to be working but the chef rang her crying and she’s gone in.

Turkey cancels flights to and from 9 European countries. I have friends who are in turkey and although the UK flights are still ongoing this could change quickly. What happens if you get stranded abroad? Does the airline have to find a way to bring you home??

Also, is it a good sign that the deaths seem to slowing down in the UK?? My anxiety and mental health are absolutely rock bottom at the moment and I'm usually stronger than this!

@exochord
My friend is Iranian and has family in Iran.

She says things are hell on Earth there.

Thousands of deaths and 50,000+ cases which are not reported.

fedup21 · 14/03/2020 13:41

Does anyone know when the ‘only testing people who are ill in hospital’ change started?

When will that data appear in the 2pm stats?

Janemarpling · 14/03/2020 13:42

Arlene just said we will close schools when it is the right time.

Dr John Campbell seems to have changed his tune! He’s even referring to the CMO as ‘Chris’ like they’re best mates! Very odd!

Lumene · 14/03/2020 13:43

@Angryrant55 the British press won’t be dictated to by Dominic Cummings or any other political type as to what they should or should not write.

Some of the papers will have a Tory bias sure - but others very much not. So if you browse across the spectrum you get a better overall picture.

BeyondMymymymyCorona · 14/03/2020 13:44

Not quite the same, but my wedding is in July. We're not cancelling yet - bare minimum plan is that it'll be just the ceremony with very reduced attendance, and party at a later date

959 cases of #coronavirus in #Netherlands now. (In total)

@Powergower I don't know that it's a good sign; I think it's expected that we're on a flat bit of an expected curve and they will dramatically increase. I believe (from reading here) that people who are hospitalised usually deteriorate around a week or so into their symptoms, then may be hospitalised for a while before they die.

Given the rate of transmission/infection that may be going on right now....

defthand · 14/03/2020 13:49

It’s really exploding in Spain right now. Why is the death rate so much higher in Italy and Spain than Germany?

Are the Germans finding more mild cases? Do they have an earlier stage outbreak? A different strain of the virus?

Puzzling.

Mohster · 14/03/2020 13:49

Soaps don't work to kill viruses. antibacterial soaps and hand washes also only kill bacteria and not viruses. However, soaps are still important when you are washing hands which you should do regularly every day to make sure you are not carrying the virus and transfer it tot surfaces for others or touch your eyes mouth nose and let it get hold of you. soaps remove the grease and other layers (SEBUM) that would not be removed and are used by viruses to stay on surfaces. The only hand cleaners are those that have ethanol and are clearly marked as killing viruses. However, hand washing is still really important despite using these which should be used when your out and there is no soap and water. Cleaning the skink and other areas is also so important as the water particles will spread the virus through aerosolization to surfaces around sinks. Use antiviral wipes or sprays to clean these surfaces regularly if not on every use. Good procedures mean set processes that are used by muscle and behavioural memory.

AlunWynsKnee · 14/03/2020 13:51

I am another one confused by the strategy of herd immunity and not testing. How will the government know it is working or not? I assume they'll extrapolate from hospital admissions but that makes lots of assumptions and means people who are immune (if that happens) are still isolating rather than being able to get out and help.

Twasbambam · 14/03/2020 13:52

When will the stupidly reduced testing start to show in the UK figures?
