I too can't sleep. Hence my haunting the MN coronavirus threads! It's frustrating since sleep builds up the immune system. Oh well.

I'd tell the school dc has symptoms and in accordance with government advice is self isolating. Obviously up to you but that's what I would do in your situation. For peace of mind.

@Crichiegirl I am thinking of keeping mine off school and saying they have a temperature.

boatyardblues · 15/03/2020 01:34

There’s a line in a poem I read which said: ‘the only way out is through’, which is about putting one foot in front of the other & just keep going. If you can focus on the here & now and count your blessings it helps. Try not to worry about the future - beyond reasonable individual behaviours we can’t control it, we can only respond as our personal circumstances change & deal with new facts as they arise. I’m just off to bed, but as I turn in I am thankful that my nearest & dearest are safe & sound here and now, that we had an uneventful day where we loved & laughed. We also went for a walk where I savoured the bird song and signs of spring and the lovely chat I had with DS2. Life goes on.

How long immunity lasts for following covid-19 infection is the biggest unknown. Comparison with other Coronaviridae suggests it may be relatively short-lived (i.e. months). If this were to be confirmed, it would add to the challenge of managing the pandemic. (7/12)
Short-lived immunisation would defeat both ‘flattening the curve’ and ‘herd immunity’ approaches. Devising an effective strategy would be even more challenging under low seasonal forcing. It would also considerably complicate effective vaccination campaigns. (8/12)

#breaking 70-year-old Japanese man — a Diamond Princess passenger who tested negative — has now tested positive AGAIN. He was hospitalized on Feb 14, tested negative on March 2 & went home. On March 14, he had a high temperature & was re-tested and diagnosed positive a 2nd time

Italians over 80 'will be left to die' as country overwhelmed by coronavirus

Coronavirus victims in Italy will be denied access to intensive care if they are aged 80 or more or in poor health should pressure on beds increase, a document seen by the Sunday Telegraph reveals.

we need to remember when the talk about the 1% death rate. The vast majority of those deaths would be elderly with underlying health conditions.

If those very people were on lock down for 4 months while the rest of us got the virus, the death rate would be much much lower than 1%.

The virus doesn't just pick 1 out of every hundred people to kill... it just so happens 1 out of every 100 that get it will tend to be an elderly person with underlying health issues.

This is the same with the need for ventilators etc being at 5%. it is the type of people [elderly with health conditions] that catch it that makes these figures so high. so if we decrease the amount of elderly with health conditions that get the virus these numbers should not be so high!

Lynamic · 15/03/2020 05:24

that French report linked above looks bad for everyone

@Crichiegirl I have asked the DFE that exact question as I have parents at my school who want to keep their children off now. Their response was that if they are self isolating it's authorised under code 'y'. If they are ill it's authorised as ill as it usually would be. If they're off because they're worried about Coronavirus but otherwise we'll in themselves, it's an unauthorised absence as is in DFE's eyes they should be in school.

I have sent a further communication to ask what about in the case of immunosuppressed relatives in order to keep them safe, and I'm waiting for a response.

I will let you know when I get it.

sawyersfishbiscuits · 15/03/2020 07:09

@Sassenach85 I'm really feeling the same. We have an event today that's been a year in planning, that involves a lot of people. I do not want to go. I'm terrified that I'll look back and this will be a turning point.

Last night I was horrible and snappy to DH. I just hate the feeling of not being able to control this.

RedToothBrush · 15/03/2020 07:13

There will be restrictions in the UK by the end of the day if I'm reading the runes correctly. I think it will go further than 'lock the elderly up for 16 weeks'.

Government realise they've not read public mood correctly and models are worse than they'd planned for. Whilst scientists might be advising them, government still don't want to risk a major political disaster because they have their model off and strategy might not work when rest of the world is behaving differently. They aren't bothered by deaths (too many Darwinists in control) ; just political fall out.

So policy will shift by end of day if I'm not mistaken.

BeijingBikini · 15/03/2020 07:14

I don't understand why there are still penalties for not going to school! I have family in 2 european countries that haven't shut school (one has a low-ish number of cases atm) but they are being allowed to take their kids out if they want to. One of the governments has said "We know everyone's circumstances are different, so it's up to you" basically.

Why is Boris not at least doing that....

Toomanyapplesinthefruitbowl · 15/03/2020 07:15

@Crichiegirl - if your child had a (random and unrecorded spike of a) temperature then you have to keep them home for 7 days. Didn’t they have a spike overnight last night? Wink

MarshaBradyo · 15/03/2020 07:16

Red equally they could now be saying the time is right. By that I mean the scientific advice too. They haven’t put forward a time plan anywhere have they? How do you know it’s due to political mood?

BoJoMoFo · 15/03/2020 07:16

@BeijingBikini I feel like that too, as a Head teacher. It doesn't sit comfortably with me, morally, to be having conversations with parents about their absences in these circumstances being unauthorised. I think at the moment they're churning out that advice as they're not brave enough to make a change yet... but I think it will change.

GalOopNorth · 15/03/2020 07:17

BoJoMoFo our DC are off for that reason. It’s been authorised as Exceptional Circumstances.

There is no way on God’s green earth the council will be taking parents of normally attending children to court over than being off now. None at all.

Toomanyapplesinthefruitbowl · 15/03/2020 07:17

@RedToothBrush is there a cobra meeting planned for today?

BoJoMoFo · 15/03/2020 07:18

I have been advising certain families that they need to write me a letter saying their children have a high temperature... happy to bend the rules! I don't want them being penalised when they have genuine reasons imo to keep their children off even though they're not ill.

GalOopNorth · 15/03/2020 07:19

Sorry BoJo, just read your post properly!

I see you are asking the DfE, therefore probably a Head. I suspect they will tie the party line and insist it should be unauthorised and parents prosecuted. In reality I am sure this will never happen. There will be many many thousands of parents keeping their DC at home next week.
