Live!

MarshaBradyo · 15/03/2020 00:04

They can easily put in place measures to make it unpalatable to be at risk.

It’s awful but they can.

MarshaBradyo · 15/03/2020 00:05

Having said that I’m not convinced it’s real yet. Needs to be verified

I think I'm going to keep asthmatic DD at home on Monday. DH can wfh but I work in a school so probably won't make any difference health wise for her but at least I'll be adding to govt pressure to protect vulnerable children.

Foobydoo · 15/03/2020 00:21

Did anyone notice the Matt Hancock article posted on the last page said 'most' had underlying health issues? Rather than all.

ofwarren · 15/03/2020 00:27

Yes @foobydoo I noticed that straight away too...

Dont most over 70 have some form of underlying issue at it's broadest definition - HBP/Chloesterol/Diabetis etc.

Destinysdaughter · 15/03/2020 00:33

#Boristhebutcher is currently trending on Twitter!

CKoRn · 15/03/2020 00:37

It's been trending all night. A lot of annoyed people at this government.

MarshaBradyo · 15/03/2020 00:39

People will be annoyed no matter what

Alternatively it’s Italy style with lack of care for same group

There’s no good choices atm

Rosainryehead · 15/03/2020 00:44

Is anyone up? Feeling v lonely and panicky tonight. We are at an air bnb for the weekend ahead of my DS's 4th birthday monday. He has just thrown up everywhere, ruining the feather duvet, pillow and mattress. I am now downstairs with him watching my lovely boy sleep and feeling absolutely powerless and terrified at what is happening. I dont know how to make myself feel better.

I was so looking forward to his birthday and now we cant do anything we planned and I feel like the world is ending.

anonacfr · 15/03/2020 00:48

It does feel like there's a huge sense of doom going on.
We have stayed in this weekend, I have a child with ear infection with slight fever. Technically he should self isolate, I can't imagine I will be able to get antibiotics for his ear...
And in the meantime God knows what will happen tomorrow, and the day after.
Rosa I hope your DS is better soon.

Wehttam · 15/03/2020 00:49

Indeed the alternative is over 70s carry on as normal, get infected and risk a long difficult painful death. This thing literally devastates your immune system and will cause irreparable damage even with treatment at this age. If they can not handle a long isolation then it is their choice but they should be under no illusions the health system will help in their time of need.

Janemarpling · 15/03/2020 00:51

A lot of people under 70 live with over 70s.

How will that work?

DakotaFanny · 15/03/2020 00:52

I’m still up Rosain. This is just like every other time he has been ill. Except then you weren’t worried about some crazy disease spanning the world. But he has a sickness bug and you will survive the long night ahead of you. I hope he gets better very soon.

I am still veering between total panic and “surely it can’t be that bad”. I feel like no one around me totally gets it, but then worry that my mumsnet preoccupation is skewing my view.

We will still be here tomorrow and, chances are, your DS will be well enough on his birthday to enjoy the cake and the presents. Kids turn it around so quickly. I hope you manage to get some sleep.

middleager · 15/03/2020 00:55

I'm up. I know what you mean because I spent some of tonight thinking it's not fair on the kids, I never had to grow up with this.

Feeling a little better tonight now that some action is being taken.

Right, first of all, happy birthday to your boy.
He's only four so won't know what's going on behind the scenes and will have a great birthday regardless. You can still make this special and give him.a 2nd party later in the year.

Good news. He's four and presumably healthy, so in the lowest risk group.

Kids are resilient. They just need love and time from you. He's not old enough to comprehend either (I have to put on a brave face for my early teens when they ask me about growing numbers).

I know it is worrying, but don't let this rob you of spending quality time with your son on his big day.

Angryrant55 · 15/03/2020 00:57

I think that is where the potental for major racial discord might come from - feels like a tinderbox ready to explode with many people willing to stir up tensions.

How has this been delt with in Italy and the rest of europe.

MrsFogi · 15/03/2020 01:01

Government strategy appears to be:
Stage 1 - wash your hands - if you don't it is your fault if you catch this airborne virus;
Stage 2 - stay in if you have a cold - if you don't it is your fault if anyone else catches this virus;
Stage 3 - lock yourself up for four months if you are over 70 or immunosuppressed - if you don't it is your fault if you catch this virus and die.

Please note it is all individuals' fault if anyone catches/dies of this virus. Not the government's cynical lack of action, oh no.

tryingtoprep · 15/03/2020 01:02

What we could (and should) have done is Italy (and many other countries) style BEFORE it got this bad. So that it never got this bad. Preventive action. We should still do this so that we can buy time. Ease pressure on the NHS. Vaccines are being worked on and before that several drugs have shown promise in treating it. As Tedros of the WHO says all lives are precious. We should be protecting everyone of all ages - and that means doing the same as most of Europe, the gulf states, the US, and other countries worldwide.

I wondered when non "elderly with underlying conditions" deaths would happen. Too many people won't want to take precautions until they realise they or their families too could be at risk. The government needs to stop downplaying and othering.

Crichiegirl · 15/03/2020 01:04

I'm struggling to get any information on where parents stand legally if they feel sending their children to school at the moment is a bad idea. I've got a son who is a chronic asthmatic and I have heart and other health issues, meaning my husband is my full time carer. I'm concerned about sending my son (who is also autistic, so may not be so compliant with handwashing etc) into school. But I'm obviously concerned that this may be recorded as an unauthorized absence and we may face prosecution for him being truant. If we do isolate ourselves, there is also nothing in place for him to access the school work he would miss. He's studying for his nat5 exams so every class counts.
Any ideas, suggestions or thoughts?

Lynamic · 15/03/2020 01:08

I can't sleep lately either. Feels like being trapped surrounded by sick people coughing at every turn. I can't stop thinking. Been looking at houses in the countryside, disposable masks at £30 a piece, trying to find genuine medicines on the dark web. But then this could be an overreaction and my dc will be fine when they catch it. Can't be said for others in my family.its crazy. Your little boy will be okay Rosainryehead

Rosainryehead · 15/03/2020 01:08

Thanks guys. Think I'm feeling wobbly as we've had a few random vomiting episodes lately (think three since January) where he's vomited once and then been totally fine. So I always worry there is something more going on with him.

middleager · 15/03/2020 01:09

Crichi watching closely as one of mine has asthma and with no clear guidance this places us in a difficult position.
