And that's the balance the government have to make.

Hiw many lives could be lost due to us basically going bankrupt?

How many will starve. How many will commit suicide because they can't deal with thenhardhips anymore.

In an ideal world noone would die, but we don't live in an ideal world.

Sunshinesky1981 · 14/03/2020 21:59

@cjt110 Its strange that you said about sore ears. My 10 year old has has came out with a bad cough and woke up during the night with really bad pains in the inside of his ear on the right. Have been tracking his temperature and he is only 36.5 at the moment

BeyondMymymymyCorona · 14/03/2020 22:00

Red, I’ve never been so happy to already be on UC!! 😬 (Former support group ESA so no compulsory interviews)

Sunflower20 · 14/03/2020 22:02

I'm so so fucking glad that some countries are closing their borders to the UK. I know several people who will have no qualms travelling to Italy/Spain/Germany, and would happily return to work without self isolating. Thank fuck.

OldQueen1969 · 14/03/2020 22:02

Thanks to all who contributed re the steroids prescribed to my friend. They are oral tablets and after lengthy discussions they have made the choice to stop taking them until they have pressed harder for a test. If it's not CV19 then fine, they may help a "standard" chest infection and they can resume but if it is maybe they have staved off potential complications. All of this could have been avoided if they had just tested at the hospital and not restricted it to admissions only IMO. In the meantime we are hoping that the antibiotics will do the trick - no-one wants to have CV19 after all!

I hate what this damn virus is doing to people across the board - anxiety is becoming default even though we're all being calm, pragmatic and rational, and the way the Govt is handling this is directly contributing to that IMO.

nellodee · 14/03/2020 22:03

Given Syria has one of the lowest global suicide rates, I don't know as there is a particularly strong correlation between economy and suicide rates.

nellodee · 14/03/2020 22:04

Even with a recession, the UK should, if it has the will, be able to prevent death by starvation.

Random18 · 14/03/2020 22:07

nellodee we keep some people alive with food banks.........

People are already stopping donations as they are ensuring their families have sufficient supplies.

What will happen when we really feel the impact? And recession / potentially depression afterwards.

Bumblesbumbles · 14/03/2020 22:08

I’m just so relieved to see this strong action from the Govt- protecting the vulnerable and the NHS. So long as it is done at the right time. Brilliant. After all my previous whinging.

Random18 · 14/03/2020 22:10

Bumbles it was clear from the last press conference this is what they were going to do.

I don't trust BJ as far as I could throw him but I really do think it's the experts who are essentially calling the shots.

Angryrant55 · 14/03/2020 22:12

But will some of then listen. Plenty of the blitz sprit among the over 70. And for others who will supply them if they have no family near by and few under 70 friends.

SonjaMorgan · 14/03/2020 22:12

I am far more concerned at what will happen after the peak. I am very calm and rational but I believe this could be the end of the world as we know it. I am hoping we can all become closer as communities and make better environmental decisions (less travelling and meeting face to face for work). I can only imagine this is just the start.

Bumblesbumbles · 14/03/2020 22:14

They presented it as if it was a long way off which is what concerned me. I think it’s far closer now and that’s a huge relief. Also enforcing all those over 70s for four months is far more than I thought they would do. It’s a huge step

Angryrant55 · 14/03/2020 22:14

I think the world will be more nationalist as people turn on outsiders and minorities.

cjt110 · 14/03/2020 22:17

@plaidpyjamas Could you link it for me?

Here are some videos from China. Most of the videos from the residents are being taken down apparently. Beware they are not pleasant viewing from hospitals and people collapsing in the streets and body bags pili g up in the back of vans

I’m really worried.

Random18 · 14/03/2020 22:21

Bumbles it is a huge step. And I don't know how it will go.

I really worry for my DP's and this is going to be incredibly hard for my DM.

I hope though that we can get a better understanding of immunity.

I can hopefully get it without any problems, DC too. Dh I have some concerns.

Although I guess we won't bloody know due to lack of testing.

But wonder if we could then see them if we have had it.

Angryrant55 · 14/03/2020 22:21

New land for emergency cemeteries will be found while all the post Shipman rules for certifying deaths will be scrapped.

300K die each year. its after new grave space will be needed more than during it - there is capacity for night and weekend cremation.

nellodee · 14/03/2020 22:23

Food banks. Don't get me started. We're better than this.

clamig · 14/03/2020 22:24

I'm glad to hear that provisions are likely to be made for over 70s to isolate for 16 weeks but I hope that will also extend to recognise younger people in at risk groups with conditions like hypertension and diabetes. I feel like this group (which includes myself) are a bit forgotten at the moment especially when still having to go to work in schools and the like and potentially being exposed.

Having said that, I'm so upset and worried at the whole current policy anyway because how can anyone know how they will respond to the virus, even if 'well'. I think we've had enough reports of previously well, young people being severely affected to say we just simply dont know it'll all be ok if you're young and healthy and it just seems like a massive gamble with people's lives.

I also have been thinking about the reports of possible long term effects, including breathlessness and that on the testes of males and potential effect on fertility. We might end up with a population suffering long term sequelae ......all for the sake of trying to achieve immunity to a virus that is very likely to mutate anyway..... there are already two identified strains. In addition, by the winter and the worry of a second peak there might already be a vaccine or treatment.

The government approach just doesnt make sense with such uncertainty and our already precarious NHS.

LizzyButton · 14/03/2020 22:24

A friend of mine is Chinese and lives here in the U.K. she says some of her Chinese friends are leaving here and going back to China as they think it’s safer! Wtf! And I think they’re right!

A friend of my mum "touches base" with three first year Chinese undergraduates from NE China who are at a central London university. Friend knows the father of one of them and it is an informal thing where they have met termly and they also have a whatsapp group where they ask things about the UK they don't want to ask their tutors.

Two are planning to go home to be safer than in London (as they see it) and have bought protective things to wear on the flight. One is staying but is very unhappy with current measures and has bought in supplies, stays in and only walks to and from university avoiding public transport.

They are all single children and have "interesting" perspectives, clearly being the precious hopes of well connected parents.

Cheeseismylife · 14/03/2020 22:24

Someone in my town died of CV this morning. Sad
So sad.

Oakmaiden · 14/03/2020 22:25

Apparently I don't have a thermometer in the house. I used to have one - I have no idea where it has wandered off to. But no-one in my house has been unwell enough for me to need to take someone's temperature for years and years.

And now, having woken up this morning with very swollen glands, dd is feeling a little bit warmer to the touch than normal. Not very, but just a little. So it would be really useful to be able to take her temperature. Can I find a thermometer to buy? Not a hope in hell.

I don't even know if swollen glands are a possible symptom. I haven't heard them mentioned - but a lot of viruses can cause swollen glands. Anyone got any idea?

Twasbambam · 14/03/2020 22:25

I think the world will be more nationalist as people turn on outsiders and minorities.

I could see the opposite happening if countries pull together, like China sending aid to Italy.

The UK might even become less insular...

I imagine not many will have faith in the government when their inactivity beats fruit and loved ones start dying in great numbers. If other countries came to our aid with medics/ventilators some people might find a new appreciation for the rest of humanity.

Yes, I'm being extremely optimistic.

Originalyellowbelly · 14/03/2020 22:25

I am 70, I haven't been out of my home for 2 weeks. I am happy to stay indoors to save my self from getting sick but happier to not get it and pass it on to someone who needs treating more than me although I have several underlying conditions.
