A colleague went to hong kong mid December for a few days, then onto another county for a fortnight. Got ill at the end, took paracetamol to get through the airport then was off work extremely unwell and bed bound for two or three weeks before returning still looking grim with a terrible cough. After returning to work, another colleague became ill, came in so he didn't lose pay and then I got sick too. Not full on flu, but pretty rough with a painful chest, fatigue, breathlessness and a horrid dry cough that after several weeks I still cant shift. I wish, wish, wish I could find out if I'd had CV, as a) I'm on immunosuppressants and am obviously scared and b) would be much more useful to society in my role within care if I knew I was immune - I could cover for others that weren't. It's not just testing for positives that would be good, its testing for immunity so the immune can take more front line roles without worrying too much about infection.

@SofieSarah absolutely devastating, im so very sorry that your family are having to ask that of you.

Made me cry (again! I cried watching all the Italians sing out their windows, I cried about the Italian chap on a work call with a pp dh saying how bad it was over there...)

Random18 · 14/03/2020 20:43

Macrons remember we are not quite as the same level as France / Germany.

So in many ways the actions we will take will be the same.

You do wonder if some countries have moved too quickly and it will only cause them more problems long term, especially if there is a 2nd peak.

BarbedBloom · 14/03/2020 20:45

It makes sense about the elderly but still no advice that I can see about the young with underlying conditions and immune suppression. Unless I've missed something?

yoloPenguinsEatfish · 14/03/2020 20:45

DD2 has just told me that it's all over twitter that Eton has closed. I have no verification of this...

But it's ok for the plebs to send their kids to school as long as the elite are preserved for the next generation Angry does just not say enough.

picklemewalnuts · 14/03/2020 20:46

Yolo, I wonder if it's about getting children back to their families? They have a lot of boarders, I believe.

Elderly could be quarantined for four months in 'wartime-style' mobilisation to combat coronavirus, writes Robert Peston

£"More than half the #COVIDー19 cases in French ICUs are apparently under 60"*

To be fair, this is less surprising that you might think. Yes COVID disproportionately affects older people rather than younger ones. BUT: Even during normal times, people over 70 are rarely put in ventilation in ICU - they have poorer outcomes and tend to be much more difficult to wean off artificial breathing. So most patients on ventilation would be younger. At a time of increased demand and short supply, ICUs will prioritize admissions from the patient group most likely to survive and recover.

As the crisis proceeds we may find that percentage of ICU patients under 65 becomes even higher

Your Tesco order might arrive in a Morrisons van by the sound of this.

The times @thetimes
An executive at one leading supermarket said: “If it comes to an emergency situation for the likes of Tesco, Morrisons and Sainsbury’s then we’ll share depots and vans. But there may still be a question of manpower.”

Coronavirus: Shoppers in quarantine wait a week for deliveries

Leading supermarkets have suggested that they are not prepared for an unprecedented surge in online panic buying, forcing customers isolated at home to wait more than a week for deliveries.

As large numbers of people are advised to stay at home, leading supermarket chains are preparing to set aside their rivalries to work together to deliver to customers.

However, the online grocery market is not prepared for what is coming, bosses said, and there is “a real issue when it comes to thinking this can replicate the supply of physical shops”.

MacronsPensWiper · 14/03/2020 20:51

You'd be amazed at how many people have bought in to it actually!

Very passive accepting messages on fb people saying, just call 111 if you feel very unwell.

I feel so sorry for anyone who thinks it will be a smooth carefully managed process.

SonjaMorgan · 14/03/2020 20:52

Using Spanish flu as a model makes some sense to me but I am left with so many questions. I am no expert so please don't think that I know what I am talking about.

How do we know that catching now will provide immunity from new strains if the virus mutates?

Do we have better information using other Coronaviruses?

What kind of information do we have to be acting so differently to other countries?

Could we not take stepped up precautions now and provide support to scientists trying to create a vaccine?

colouringinpro · 14/03/2020 20:53

France and Spain declared state of Emergency.

Angryrant55 · 14/03/2020 20:55

I read its less likely wave 2 will be as deadly unlike spanish flu due the unique situation of ww1.

MacronsPensWiper · 14/03/2020 20:55

Loppy, interesting thank you..

MacronsPensWiper · 14/03/2020 20:56

Angry I don't understand

MacronsPensWiper · 14/03/2020 20:58

This 7 day isolation, is that based on something other scientists believe in?

Sassenach85 · 14/03/2020 20:59

Anybody seen this? Any thoughts?

Random18 · 14/03/2020 21:00

I read its less likely wave 2 will be as deadly unlike spanish flu due the unique situation of ww1.

Is that because virus is weaker or because many have some immunity?

What about countries who have managed to limit the number of cases now.

GuessWhoBoo · 14/03/2020 21:03

The National Education Union – the largest of its kind in Europe – has written to the prime minister calling on him to clarify why he has not closed schools as part of the UK’s coronavirus strategy.

The letter underlines staff concerns about UK policy, which has been criticised for being out of step with other nations’ responses to the pandemic.

OldQueen1969 · 14/03/2020 21:03

So my friend has been prescribed prednisolone which is named in the paper.

I have sent them the paper, and suggested they seek further medical advice while explaining they have seen this information and wanting to be sure it's safe to take and to request a test to be sure.

My argument here is that without definitively ruling OUT CV19 they shouldn't be prescribing something that has been flagged as at best unhelpful and at worst potentially detrimental.

There's something very wrong when we are having to question clinical advice and prescriptions like this.

Believe me, the last thing I want to be doing is questioning and undermining professionals doing their best in such a crap situation, but if these issues exist what else do we do? If I don't pass it on and the outcome is bad, I will feel guilty. If she doesn't take it and it impacts her recovery because it's not CV19, then I will feel guilty. So medical clarification is very much needed ........

Oakmaiden · 14/03/2020 21:05

The Spanish flu mutated and the second wave was a more deadly variant - which attacked age groups rarely strongly affected by flu.

We have no way of knowing if a mutation of CV19 would be weaker or stronger. We have to work on the assumption it would be fairly similar to what we have now.

So a second wave wouldn't necessarily be any worse - it would just be a second wave.

SistemaAddict · 14/03/2020 21:06

How many countries are now in lockdown? Or have shut borders/banned flights?

flowerycurtain · 14/03/2020 21:10

It's Eton in the USA that's closed I think. Not Eton Windsor Eton.

nellodee · 14/03/2020 21:10

I don't get the problem with later waves, per se. Which one of these two lines looks preferable? (Please excuse the scruffy illustration)
