Semi lockdown - slightly more things open than in Italy.

OldQueen1969 · 14/03/2020 19:43

@DrBlackbird

Thanks - I will try and find that - my confidence in all this is so shot that I would love to think they are confident enough in their diagnosis that it's not CV19 hence the prescription, but the huge amount of conflicting stuff I have read is making me sceptical..... for the record I don't mean I think they're not doing their best just that information might not be filtering through as quickly as necessary.

MacronsPensWiper · 14/03/2020 19:43

@LuxLFC

This is my worry. I feel so in the dark... And every ladder that's shaky anyway is being pulled away, eg docs, 111 and a and e.

They are pulling all the ladders up and leaving us to get on with it.. They didn't want to cancel large events. They only did it due to emergency services.

OldQueen1969 · 14/03/2020 19:44

@DrBlackbird

Oh bless you for finding that - very much appreciated.

Angryrant55 · 14/03/2020 19:46

Jane Merrick - 'the government’s scientific emergencies committee (SAGE) is going to publish its modelling for the delay phase. It also says it’s soon going to institute wider self isolation for elderly/vulnerable soon:'

Angryrant55 · 14/03/2020 19:47

Jane Merrick - 'This modelling - on how they flatten the peak/squash the sombrero - is what sceptics of the government’s approach have been calling for.'

Some provinces in China have got active cases to zero.

An example:

Anhui province, not too far from Hubei province.
Size: Just a tad larger than England.
Population: 62 million
Total cases since beginning: 996
Active cases now: ZERO

VS

England:
Total cases as of today: Likely 1000+
Predicted cases: 20 million?

Cam77 · 14/03/2020 19:49

They are hoping to reopen schools in Anhui in two to three weeks.

@RedToothBrush

The psychology of this is fascinating

I agree. It's like watching a slow car crash and I am not usually a panic merchant and remain calm in the face of adversity. However, I am awaiting the results of tests this week that if positive (THEY WON'T BE) will put me in a very much compromised category.

What I couldn't believe about this evening's observations is that I saw a friend sitting in McD's, a woman who is ultra concerned about this situation, and has two children with significant SEN. I have no idea what she was thinking but she appeared happy and relaxed enough! So shocked. Anyway, we're in and sprayed down, washed and changed. I am happy to be a bit anal about all of this currently, it's better than the blatent inaction I am observing around me.

OldQueen1969 · 14/03/2020 19:54

@wherearemychickens

I know!! Talk about Catch 22! If UC had ever been a transparent and straightforward system I would have been sceptical of this too! As I say I need to get absolute clarification for them in case it is a panic induced misinterpretation of rules, but based on their previous experiences I am not hopeful.....

Wehttam · 14/03/2020 19:56

Northern Ireland schools preparing to close for 16 weeks.

boatyardblues · 14/03/2020 20:00

That Maltese story:

“We have a lady with a brain tumour , one with COPD, one with a blood clot on the lung ( recovering ) and all only brought medication for three days,” she said. “One of the young mums fainted and one collapsed hysterical as they have left their children at home for the first time ever.”

😮 What a bunch of fucking muppets! I don’t think she’s going to get the positive strokes and ‘u ok hun?’ responses to her SM posts that she was expecting.

Reastie · 14/03/2020 20:00

You know how they spoke of the British public firing of being locked down and the way they’re obviously using psychological tactics in this? Maybe this is part of the tactic. To get it so we are all self isolating and begging for a lockdown so we comply better.

mumoftwodc · 14/03/2020 20:04

@wehttam wondering if England, Scotland & Wales will follow suit? I didn't realise how many Unis are closing. I can't understand why schools aren't

Elderly to be quarantined for four months, in 'wartime-style' mobilisation to combat coronavirus,

picklemewalnuts · 14/03/2020 20:04

@DrBlackbird is that paper talking about the kind of steroids in brown inhaler?

?That brown inhalers don't help and may harm when people have Covid19?

RedToothBrush · 14/03/2020 20:05

Some Cabinet ministers are now saying the time has come for PM to be more honest about its downside: 1000s of deaths are likely now to save many more later.

Tim Shipman has said something more about this concept earlier today

Tim Shipman @shippersunbound
My sources suggest that fear of a second wave of CV19 deaths this winter is what has shaped the government's strategy. This is why:

eople over 70 will be instructed by the government to stay in strict isolation at home or in care homes for four months, under a "wartime-style" mobilisation effort by the government likely to be enforced within the next 20 days.

It is part of a series of measures being prepared by the prime minister, health secretary, chief medical officer and chief scientific adviser to prevent the health service from "falling over" and to save lives as Covid-19 becomes an epidemic in the UK.

Other measures already being planned include:

the forced requisitioning of hotels and other buildings as temporary hospitals;
the requisitioning of private hospitals as emergency hospitals;
temporary closure of pubs, bars and restaurants - some time after next weekend's ban on mass gatherings;
emergency manufacture by several companies of respirators that would be necessary to keep alive those who become acutely ill;
the closure of schools for perhaps a few weeks, but with skeleton staff kept on to provide childcare for key workers in the NHS and police.

According to a senior government source, the perception that ministers are reluctant to make difficult and costly decisions to battle the virus is wrong. It is simply that the chief medical officer Chris Whitty and the chief scientific adviser Sir Patrick Vallance are waiting for the optimal time to force restrictions on our way of life that will be very painful.

They are deeply worried that some older people will simply die at home from neglect, after they are quarantined, so want to start the quarantine as late as possible - some time within the next five to 20 days.

The prime minister Boris Johnson and health secretary Matt Hancock are counting on neighbours and friends to rally round to make sure no one is neglected. "We are looking for a huge community effort," said a source.

Lots will die - not really community spirit near me ( and the few elderly i know near here all have family living with them or streets away with one exception.

OldQueen1969 · 14/03/2020 20:07

Oh Lord. have just looked at the paper about steroids and CV19.

I want to pass it on to my friend but don't want to panic them.

Yikes.

And if it's not CV19 I don't want to risk benefits of treatment to other conditions which it might be. But if it is - Jesus Christ.

We have good community spirit here I reckon

yoloPenguinsEatfish · 14/03/2020 20:11

bars, restaurants etc closed in France - that's the end of the ski season then. I've told DD1 to start sorting her stuff out/packing, anticipating she will be home by the end of the week. Even if France doesnt close borders - which I think they will - bookings will be cancelled and therefore no money to pay staff.

Who looks after the kids of key workers before and after school.
