I don’t think people get it yet.
Our prime minister is telling us to keep calm and carry on, wash your hands and no need to cancel things.
The chief medical adviser is saying they are doing what’s best for the country, and sadly people just believe they must be.

chillychicken · 14/03/2020 19:17

Am I being OTT by avoiding the gym? My DH wants me to avoid it and I have no idea if it’s too soon to put life on hold or what. My head is spinning and I feel very anxious and confused about what is best to do.

Evening all after another day when the madness seems to have increased exponentially.

Sorry to dump this on this thread - did start one of my own but don't think my title was catchy enough to get a response, so I'm just hoping that one or two of you knowledgeable and helpful lot may be able to take a quick gander and possibly answer the questions that today's events have brought to mind:

Ok, am going to post a real life scenario that has developed today in relation to people close to me - not living in my house but still local family.

Last night Person A developed a really bad cough, high temperature and symtoms supposedly consistent with the CV19. This morning, they were no better, in fact so poorly that they were moved to ring 111. Person B, their DP has a condition that makes them at greater risk of complications if they do catch the virus.

Following instructions, person A got themselves as instructed to the testing waiting area set up in our local hospitals car park, and was taken in by staff for assessment. An X-ray has shown a severe chest infection, but not bad enough to be admitted - the area inside had bays crammed full of people. Very strong antibiotics were prescribed, plus steroids and person A was told to go back to their car wearing a mask, and go home. When they asked about being tested they were told that only people ill enough to be admitted were being tested. So we do not know if this is, or is not, the virus.

Being responsible types, persons A and B are self-isolating in their home for at least seven days while monitoring progress of treatment and seeing if person B develops symptoms. They have the space, fortunately, to separate from each other to a large degree, and also keep the two pre-teen children in the house out of harms way. We are rallying round to make sure they have everything they need because it seems like madness to assume that without a test result it definitely isn't CV19.

These people are not well off. An added layer of anxiety is that UC, which Person A claims, will only be adjusted sympathetically if a formal diagnosis is given - which it can't be if no test is done. This is by no means being referenced in a grabby way, but to illustrate the knock on effect of the way this virus is being handled. Person B has had their freelance work cancelled this week due to CV19 fears.

I think we have all had an inkling that this would become a problem of massive proportions, but having it so very close to home really does show how disorganised and unhelpful the current testing regime is.

Aside from general opinions, does anyone have any idea how a "normal" flu virus / chest infection can be differentiated from CV19 without testing?

Obviously if person A massively deteriorates despite treatment, they will seek appropriate medical help again. But I can't see any value in the current approach to testing - people who have been close to A&B in the last week are now on high alert for symptoms, and wondering about their own necessity to self isolate as a precaution - which will affect, potentially, jobs and caring responsibilities. Should we or should we not isolate? My instinct and social responsibility bone says yes, my logic says no because it might not be - I'm going round and round in circles with this.

Just do the fucking tests already in these circumstances surely?????

Angryrant55 · 14/03/2020 19:18

Some Cabinet ministers are now saying the time has come for PM to be more honest about its downside: 1000s of deaths are likely now to save many more later.

yoloPenguinsEatfish · 14/03/2020 19:18

angryrant dont worry, I've found it on BBC

TheFormidableMrsC · 14/03/2020 19:19

@chillychicken I would avoid the gym. I can no longer run as my knees are fucked, but I power walk for at least an hour a day. Have continued to do that in fields and off the beaten track where I might come across the odd dog walker and I do strength training at home. I think the gym is too high risk and if I still had a membership, I'd have cancelled for now.

RedToothBrush · 14/03/2020 19:23

TheFormidableMrsC I think there are a lot of people with 'an apocalyse is coming we must enjoy everything whilst we can' mentality ahead of everything being shut down. Its as if everyone has been given an hour to live and what would they do dilema playing out in real life.

The psychology of this is fascinating.

1happyhippie · 14/03/2020 19:25

@OldQueen1969
That sounds like an awful worry. If someone presents with symptoms, while living with someone vulnerable, they should be tested!
This is only the start of it, and already it’s clear this only testing severe cases needing hospitalised, is ridiculous!
I hope your friend gets better soon.

With regards to universal credit, can she give a self certificate for the 7 days? She’s self isolating like the government has told us to?

LuxLFC · 14/03/2020 19:28

I made a point of watching Bozo's press conference the other day but if not for that there is a good chance I'd have missed the info. The press conference should be at a time when more people are at home & on multiple channels, not just the news. Broadcast on radio too. There will be so many people in this country who don't pay attention to the news & won't even know about the 7 day thing.

DrBlackbird · 14/03/2020 19:28

Yolo I thought French ski slopes were remaining open? Just Austria and Italy slopes closed. Will you get your DD out regardless?

DrBlackbird · 14/03/2020 19:36

OldQueen somewhere on these threads, someone had posted a link from (I think) a Lancet article linking cortosteroid use with worse outcomes in China for CV-19... maybe your neighbour should not be taking those?!

Can anyone remember the link?

OldQueen1969 · 14/03/2020 19:38

@1happyhippie

Thank you for your reply and good wishes.

I will be trying to help them clarify the UC position further, but I think from what was said only definite diagnoses of CV19 qualify for extenuating circumstances....

I also think that if 111 say go to hospital because CV is suspected, then tests should be done even if they aren't being admitted. Also is it likely that people who might normally be admitted if assessed to be younger and otherwise healthy are being told to go home because of resources?

And I really want to know how they decide if something is CV19 or just an average flu / chest infection unless testing is done.....

And it is a double worry for me as both me and my son were socialising with them at the beginning of the week and are looking after my Mum with end stage terminal cancer too. Every time I think I've got some sort of handle on my stress levels at the moment, another layer of crap gets shovelled on it seems .......

We really need to know one way or the other !!!!!

wherearemychickens · 14/03/2020 19:41

"only definite diagnoses of CV19 qualify for extenuating circumstances...." if that's right, and it's combined with the new testing policy that they're only testing once you are admitted to hospital, that is appalling.
