*The public should know every measure we are taking is seeking to save lives and protect the most vulnerable. Every single one of us has a role to play in achieving this.

justchecking1 · 14/03/2020 14:21

350?

Oakmaiden · 14/03/2020 14:21

6% of population have diabetes

1 in 3 adults has high blood pressure (so 20% of population)

12% of the population have asthma.

So that is between 20 and 38% of the population are actually in a high risk group.

Whereisthechicken · 14/03/2020 14:21

I'm not sure how are numbers go up by much if they're not testing anymore. I expect the government will be bragging about low numbers this time next week and how they've got it all under control

bananapuddles · 14/03/2020 14:23

Up 342, around 4500ish tests.

SansaSnark · 14/03/2020 14:23

Where are people getting the 1140 cases from, please?

justchecking1 · 14/03/2020 14:24

The gov.uk website

Twasbambam · 14/03/2020 14:24

Where is the plus 350 from? Can't see anything yet?

nellodee · 14/03/2020 14:24

1140?

That number hits hard.

cjt110 · 14/03/2020 14:25

Shitting hell. So 7.6% of those tested in that 4500 came back positive

confusedandtired99 · 14/03/2020 14:26

Christ. We knew it was coming but that jump hurt Sad

sadatchristmas1 · 14/03/2020 14:26

Gov.uk updated their number of confirmed cases about 5 mins ago

Twasbambam · 14/03/2020 14:27

Bloody hell...

Glad we are already self-isolating.

Guess I better start getting serious about de-reg and home education!

New York state reports first death from coronavirus, raising U.S. death toll to 50; patient was an elderly woman t.co/1x8YilLzhD

Pootle40 · 14/03/2020 14:27

I don't think the reporting is callous. They are telling us it is elderly and those with underlying medical issues because if they didn't tell us that there would be (even worse) hysteria assuming the whole population is at risk. So it makes sense to me. It is factual reporting

SansaSnark · 14/03/2020 14:27

Thank you. Nothing on Twitter yet, which is usually updated pretty quickly.

These numbers are getting scary, especially if you think of all the people not being tested.

It feels like the government are at best constantly playing catch up.

Orangeblossom78 · 14/03/2020 14:28

Ten more deaths today in UK

www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-51889957

sadatchristmas1 · 14/03/2020 14:28

@cjt110 because they are only testing people who are ill in hospital, There will be a higher percentage of people testing positive.

Oakmaiden · 14/03/2020 14:28

I have no words.

I'm not sure how are numbers go up by much if they're not testing anymore.

I suspect we will be watching the number of deaths as a true reflection of the depth of the problem. Which is awful.

FlamingoAndJohn · 14/03/2020 14:28

Holy hell that is a leap.
Surely the schools won’t still be open by the end of the week.

Oakmaiden · 14/03/2020 14:29

@sadatchristmas1

because they are only testing people who are ill in hospital, There will be a higher percentage of people testing positive.

I am not sure that is true of today's figures. The figures released today were probably tested on Thursday (before the policy change).

It will be interesting to see the changes in numbers of tests and percentages over the next few days though.

SansaSnark · 14/03/2020 14:30

The test results coming out today may be from tests done at the end of last week, though- so not necessarily just hospital cases.

nellodee · 14/03/2020 14:30

Not only are cases rising exponentially in the UK, they appear to be doing so at a slightly higher rate than in Italy.

Oakmaiden · 14/03/2020 14:31

@nellodee it is hard to see if that is because of the way we are testing though. Of course, by the time we can say for sure it will be too fucking late to do anything about it.
