China have contained virus within 7 weeks

And they had far more cases than us. Why are we being told that it is too hard to contain the virus when we have far less cases as a starting point?

The issue with china is they had a hotspot so was able to lock down small parts of the country. Here it is very evenly spread so unless you are going to close the country down [which is stupid] it will not work!

Mummyoflittledragon · 15/03/2020 04:54

Well we wouldn’t have it in the whole country had we started with a very different strategy. The irony is were it not for my health, we would have probably cleared out from here some time after 2016. Now I’m stuck here not knowing what this rabid virus will do to us all.

MangoFeverDream · 15/03/2020 05:13

so China and its people can live with the legacy?

Please don’t conflate the government with its people. They are just as much a victim of Chinese authorities.

The wrongdoers trading diseased caged animals couldn't care less! So are you going to take on the sins and transgressions of drug dealers or porn producers in your country killing and wrecking people's lives?

At least drug dealing is illegal. But not the wildlife trade, which should have been clamped down in 2004 with SARS.

ShanghaiDiva · 15/03/2020 07:12

@Forgone90
The restrictions in Wuhan are tough, but the chinese ‘Locked down’ the whole country not just small parts.
Schools shut
Only supermarkets and pharmacies open
Private health clinics shut
Permission needed to travel
Self isolation and quarantine measures
These were, and some still are, in effect in the entire country.

Butterwhy · 15/03/2020 07:16

@Mummyoflittledragon I think by the time we were formally diagnosing cases we already had many people around the country infected. If we think of the numbers globally, which are still too high for comfort, but in relation to the population low; how come several

ShanghaiDiva · 15/03/2020 07:17

The Chinese are as much victims of this as anyone else. They have lost friends and relatives and some have been unable to leave their homes for 50 days. Empathy and compassion are more appropriate than apportioning blame.

Butterwhy · 15/03/2020 07:18

Oops posted too soon

...'famous' people have it? Statistically with the numbers of formally diagnosed it would be a coincidence to have maybe one or two, but not Tom Hanks, JTs wife, several sports people, health minister, Trump being tested etc. If it's been around since November in China, our numbers have certainly been substantially higher than reported. And that's baring in mind as well that few people with symptoms have been tested- but the maths and probability doesn't seem to stack up.

nellodee · 15/03/2020 07:19

China did NOT lock down when the virus had peaked. China locked down. Growth was arrested. Once the people who had caught the virus before lockdown developed symptoms, there was your peak.

The lockdown CAUSED the peak. The earlier you lockdown, the earlier you peak.

MarshaBradyo · 15/03/2020 07:19

Ok have a little for the U.K. when all we hear is your govt is trying to kill you off.

I don’t think they are btw, they will enforce measures in next couple of days, people will go nuts as they have already on over 70 thing. There will be action and it will be unpalatable to many. The same people that were clamouring for lock downs probably.

But it will keep exposure down.

EnthusiasmIsDisturbed · 15/03/2020 07:25

China locked down after it peaked and medical workers feel ill no doubt extremely over worked how they managed heir lock down has been applauded but it’s a completely different country to those in Europe

China reported 8 new confirmed cases on i think Thursday they have a population of nearly 1.4 billion - I find that hard to believe

ShanghaiDiva · 15/03/2020 07:38

The updates I receive for China reported 24 new cases yesterday. My city is a zero case city ie all have recovered and no new cases.
Where I live measures have been relaxed in some areas but with tougher measures for those arriving from outside China. This suggests that they have controlled the virus in the city and the next stage is avoiding reinfection from outside.

BusterGonad · 15/03/2020 07:52

Drug dealers and porn producers don't effect the economy as such, or cause a recession or get normal folk worrying about their mortgage payments, or have people lose their patents/grand parents before their time.
I have zero sympathy for China tbh, I'm sitting here wondering how I'll afford health care if I get ill, how low the dollar will go so my husbands wages will be lower then they were a month ago, I just can't muster up any good feeling towards China at this moment in time. I feel pretty angry and I doubt anything will change (eating habits) when this episode is over.

ShanghaiDiva · 15/03/2020 08:02

Restrictions have already been introduced to prohibit the sale and consumption of wild animals. Clearly this should have been sone after SARS.
Buster - yes, tough times ahead for many people.

BusterGonad · 15/03/2020 08:38

I know deep down that anger won't help, I'm just so gobsmacked that one country can cause so much devastation. I'm just really comforted by the fact that child apparently don't get it so badly, I just wish I was living in a country with good health because at the moment I feel like a, sitting duck, or even a turkey at Christmas!!! 🙄

BusterGonad · 15/03/2020 08:39

Sorry, typos, children and healthcare.

Lordamighty · 15/03/2020 11:46

The Chinese authorities are already trying to cast doubt on the source of the virus, they are trying to blame the US military.

MarshaBradyo · 15/03/2020 11:49

I’m still reeling at one country starting this twice, second time huge, and I’m just not ready to sing their praises yet.

alloutoffucks · 15/03/2020 11:51

My concern is the here and now in the UK and preventing lots of unnecessary deaths.
China is containing the virus. They are not just letting 60% or more of their citizens get it. We could do it as well.

And for any of you stoking xenophobia at this point, you are disgusting. This will lead to attacks on Chinese people in the UK. Just think before you speak.

It’s important to set the record straight. It’s also important to remind everyone that the Chinese government and the Chinese people are separate entities and that the Chinese people are every bit the victim of shortsighted and frankly backwards government policies as everyone else on the globe now.

They have failed and we are all suffering for it.

This is not a commentary on the U.K. handling of the situation, however.

alloutoffucks · 15/03/2020 12:02

@MangoFeverDream There are comments on this thread and elsewhere clearly stoking xenophobia. We can all agree that China's response was initially totally inadequate, that the sale of exotic animals for food should never have happened, and that the Dr should not have been stopped from speaking out.
That is very different from some of the comments I have read.

OP posts:
MangoFeverDream · 15/03/2020 12:14

The Chinese government is literally trying to spread a conspiracy theory that the US manufactured the virus. Not just some crank but a spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

I have a great love of China but this was rage-inducing and indicative of their failure to take responsibility and try to muddy the waters.

We don’t even have to look to China for direction on how to handle this; South Korea, Taiwan, Japan and Singapore have all implemented models and are not experiencing exponential growth of the virus.

EnthusiasmIsDisturbed · 15/03/2020 12:18

It’s not unreasonable to question statements from the Chinese government

alloutoffucks · 15/03/2020 12:25

Of course the Chinese government is trying to blame someone else. Why would anyone be surprised at that?
Trump would do exactly the same.
It took a long time for the British government to acknowledge BSE was our fault.
It is wrong to do this, but it is hardly rare.

But unlike the British government at least they are now eradicating the virus. They did not just shrug their shoulders and say this is too hard to solve.

OP posts:
ShanghaiDiva · 15/03/2020 12:44

The comments made by the Chinese govt re the USA military being responsible are disgusting and embarrassing.
Classic example of trying to save face.
As previous posters have stated it is vital to separate the govt from the people who have suffered (to date) more than any other country regarding the effects of the virus.
We can look at how other counties are managing the virus, but those who seem most successful have employed Chinese style methods.
I have also seen sinophonic comments on social media. Now is not the time to apportion blame, but to learn from each other. Attacking Chinese nationals is abhorrent.

Summersunandoranges · 15/03/2020 12:51

I don’t believe they have it as under control as they are saying. Considering they keep taking down online videos of the state their hospitals are in. I watched some very recent videos last night and tbh it’s shocking and very scary!
