Coronavirus and herd immunity: Best interview I've seen

This Newsnight interview with a professor from the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine makes a lot of sense:

Politics aside (and no, I didn't vote for them), I do think the Government's measured approach is the right one.

Primera, what part if this isn't a turnaround?

The 'experts' have put Britain on the backfoot, measures implemented too late.

primeria · 19/03/2020 22:54

If you're moving through sequential steps in a plan, with the timing of each step being dependent on events, speeding up in response to events moving quickly is not turning around.

Herd immunity Grin

History will judge the death toll in this country, it may be bad news for the special ones.

The science has changed, would that be the gravitational constant?

Any testing for NHS workers yet, London ones are on their knees before it has even kicked off.

Going back to this and the latest revelations about Dominic Cummings' role in it all. Divulges just how dangerous this approach was.

There should be prosecutions following this.

Have you read the Times article yourself or something on social media? Behind a paywall for me.

CatherineTheNotSoGreat · 23/03/2020 15:34

Absolutely @Saoirse7!

Have you read the well articulated FT article OurActionsDefineUs? Very well articulated article.

This thread a little unusual with its overwhelming support and justification for the government’s actions.

Brings to mind the saying ‘Everyone is out of step except my Billy’

Just thought back to this thread after the UK officially having the highest death rate in Europe. Would love to hear from Primeria and all the other posters about this strategy.

primeria · 05/05/2020 21:50

Saoirse7, if you believe we "officially" have the highest death rate in Europe then you need to do a bit more reading ... www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2020/apr/30/coronavirus-deaths-how-does-britain-compare-with-other-countries

5th Vit D3 study from Belgium.

Males showed markedly higher percentage of vitamin D deficiency ..Vit D deficiency is a possible risk factor for severe infection in males. Vit D3 supplementation might be an inexpensive, accessible and safe mitigation for covid

So do you think it was a success then Primeria?

primeria · 06/05/2020 14:43

Do I think what was a success?

If you mean do I think the Gvt has broadly made the right decisions based on the information, resources and advice available to them at the time, then yes, generally speaking. But I don't think any government anywhere will always make the right decisions.

You'll need to wait a year or more to compare outcomes between countries. When you do, I suggest you stick to primary academic sources rather than politically-biased headlines.
