I've just been into my youngest's school - wanted to check their guidance and if they wanted me to keep the little one at home with an existing cold or not. They're pretty much in the situation of being hung out to dry by the LEA and having had no guidance or support at all from the sounds of it. They are really pushing handwashing with the kids and have it timetabled in throughout the day bless 'em.

Meanwhile I've had more information from the university I attended 20 years ago on their virus measures than my own current bloody university which is shockingly bad.

I’m getting so many event cancellation emails that mass events will start to dissipate through the events own decisions

I hope wfh continues to go the same way

Feeling a bit more tense about it all this am than yesterday

Kuponut · 13/03/2020 09:35

DD2's office has run out of handwash. The boss has suggested they refill the bottles with shampoo. I am not confident that shampoo has much efficacy against coronavirus.

There were loads of the Carex special edition ones still on the shelves in Tesco the other day - all the "normal" ones were sold out but the "stink of unicorn farts" type ones were all still there.

halcyondays · 13/03/2020 09:35

NI really should have been doing the same things at the same time as the Republic. But they aren’t, unless you count the Omniplex cinema chain and GAA.

diddl · 13/03/2020 09:36

I agree that there should be testing available rather than a whole family self isolating because one has a cough.

So then (for example) four people might get it & need treatment rather than just one?

So are people not being tested until they are ill enough to be in hospital?

So you might have it but feel ok so just stay at home? (and possibly infect the family)?

yoloPenguinsEatfish · 13/03/2020 09:38

Sky News just said, via PA, that a tube driver has tested positive.

Bearbehind · 13/03/2020 09:38

I think it’s clear that many on here think we can lock down for a fortnight, catch up on all our household tasks and then open the doors in 2 weeks and it’ll all be over

That’s not going to happen

The government were quite clear yesterday that they think large gatherings will be banned and schools will have to close at some point but to do it now is premature and unsustainable

DrBlackbird · 13/03/2020 09:38

...I am insured up to the eyeballs

NewYear, our business is also insured, amazingly for an unknown notifiable infectious disease. Wonderful for our staff so we could keep paying them should we lose income or have to close.

But unfortunately, this is ONLY triggered by a confirmed case within 5 miles of premises. Other's on this thread seem stubborningly obtuse about the many many reasons behind the logic and sense in community-wide testing. Testing done by technicians in labs. Not being done by frontline nurses or doctors. The cost would be a pittance out of the £30B that Sunak has so wonderfully promised us or say, even out of some of the £100B that will be found to fund the HS2.

I'm beginning to think insistence that it's fine not to know about actual data (as opposed to wild conjecture) is more about defence of our recently elected Tory PM rather than an appreciation for the science of modelling, ability to respond to local clusters, reassurance for the unwell due to causes other than CV19 etc.

MarshaBradyo · 13/03/2020 09:38

On the fear thing people react in odd ways. People here saying lock down like Italy, so many fled when they heard of the lockdown taking it to the south where healthcare isn’t as good.

People don't know what to do..
Aside some wishy washy (excuse the pun) to wash hands.

I know someone who thought they had it, couldn't get tested 111 said no. But they had been in buildings where someone tested positive. They said they felt like they were dying, chest pains for some hours. 48 hours later they are back at work. In schools.

namechangemania · 13/03/2020 09:41

I’m hating working in my office. I deal with the public, with air conditioning, with a lot of other colleagues all touching buttons to enter codes to enter other parts of the building. A lot of public I see have health issues already or are vulnerable and it’s an essential role which can’t be done from home due to data protection and None of us having laptops etc.
Every other member of the public I see seems to have a cough or cold.

I would like to know how they deem someone ‘high risk’ now!

FacingtheAbess · 13/03/2020 09:42

Running.

Thanks.

I've seen sloppily cleaning, actions behaviour onwards.
I don't doubt this is happening.. We are lambs being led to slaughter. People don't realise this unless they have personally experienced it.

'How big is coronavirus going to be?'

Prof of Infectious Disease Modelling Graham Medley - who has been advising the government on #COVID19 - believes the impact of the pandemic will be "remembered in the same kind of way" as the London Blitz during World War Two

The Guardian is reporting that the first case in China can be traced back to 17 November.

Guardian link

Makes me wonder even more whether this accounts for the hideous cough/fever viral illness I had, culminating in walking pneumonia, after travelling to Hong Kong in early January. I was ill for over a month, though not bedbound for more than about a week. Fortunately nobody around me seemed to catch it, whatever it was. The dates were too early to be considered officially at risk from Covid-19.

willdoitinaminute · 13/03/2020 09:45

Since nearly 30% of positive causes are in London it appears the capital are going to be hit first. Perhaps this is why he mentions the blitz rather than the Irish potato famine or Spanish flu.

willdoitinaminute · 13/03/2020 09:46
  • cases
Exochord · 13/03/2020 09:48

the rest will not change until they see it absolutely effect them or they are told to stop
Exactly. But they won’t see it affect them because everyone who’s seriously ill will be hidden away in hospital while the rest aren’t being tested. The government should have issued guidelines to self isolate as much as possible.

SubjectMatterExpert · 13/03/2020 09:48

The problem you have then, if you need evidence and fact before you will ACT ; is that there isn’t much evidence and fact known about this virus, how it will behave, what the outcomes will be in each given scenario

Which is WHY we should be much more proactive.

And it’s why it’s so important that government issues clear direct instructions to wfh/avoid gathers/close schools/whatever. Because there are so many numb nuts that won’t do so until directly told to do so. And they believe the reason government ISNT issuing throws directions is because they are in possession of some secret information that the rest of the world don’t know, and it’s not going to be that bad

willdoitinaminute · 13/03/2020 09:52

lark that virus has been pretty widespread in the county I live in. Interestingly we have only a handful of positive Covid cases. Very rural county so spread will probably be slower and severe flooding has lead to restricted movement over the last month and lots of events cancelled. No doubt we will catch up.

MollyButton · 13/03/2020 09:52

Apparently according to DS, people are panic buying freezers - so his store now limits purchases to 1 freezer per customer.
