Stay at home for one week if you’ve a cold (even though all evidence is that incubation is two weeks)

People over 70 don’t go on cruises.

WHAT!!!

134 new cases in a day and no action. 13 EU countries have closed all schools, another 11 partial closures but apparently no action needed in Uk.

Jesus.

'
This virus is terrible, and I fear there is nothing that can be done. We just have to try to prevent hospitals being overwhelmed at the same moment'

By doing...nothing?

UsernameUnknownn · 12/03/2020 18:37

Oh don't forget 'no foreign trips for schools'.
As if you're going to go into a school and ask
'Oh we still on for Italy next week?'

AutumnCrow · 12/03/2020 18:37

Oh yes, proper British scientists and a fruit based drink for the ladies

DoubleAction · 12/03/2020 18:37

What help do you think should be offered then Feline? They were very clear that if you need medical help you should seek it in the usual way. What medical help do people with mild symptoms of suspected CV need?

patchysmum · 12/03/2020 18:38

@JustVisiting9 I sign on and have COPD and was told this week I don't have to sign on untill April 22nd and will get my benefit as normal although I still have to go to a place that is supposed to help me find work where I could still catch it

NeckPainChairSearch · 12/03/2020 18:38

Wow, I'm really impressed at how many expert epidemiologists there are on MN

Don't be an arse. People are frightened and worried about people they love.

theflushedzebra · 12/03/2020 18:38

DIscobar - I'm suggesting they do something along the lines of Ireland, Denmark and it seems, most other European countries.

Why are our medical experts advising so differently?

Wheresthebeach · 12/03/2020 18:39

Yep lots of people are going to die and we are doing nothing at all to stop it.

Fucking Hell - what an utter disgrace.

halcyondays · 12/03/2020 18:39

There is no sensible reason not to ask people to WFH if they can, is there? So why aren’t they even doing that?

SparklingXmas · 12/03/2020 18:40

Ok @Porcupineinwaiting - wait for the official guidance to come out then in the next few weeks. I stand by my post.

Sunshine1239 · 12/03/2020 18:40

We caught our first case the exact same time as Italy yet we are miles different in terms of transmission and impact

I’d say their delay tactics are spot on and my 3 dr friends all agree - most in the medical profession here see that

You can’t test everyone

What’s the point 🤷‍♀️as most will recover and we can’t stop transmission anyway

Best for vulnerable to isolate and the rest carry on and build up that much needed immunity

If I’m ill what does it matter if I know exactly what it is - treat the symptoms and avoid others as you would normally if unwell

If you test everyone - loads who are diagnosed but will recover will take up resources that others need

LuxLFC · 12/03/2020 18:40

Why are the UK experts more knowledgeable than those in other countries who have taken stronger steps? Than those at the WHO? Oh and can nana go on holiday abroad or is it just cruises that should be avoided?! Fucking madness.

AutumnCrow · 12/03/2020 18:41

There are actually people on MN who are scientists

Discobar · 12/03/2020 18:41

@FelineUK that was never said. If your condition worsens of course you seek help

EerieSilence · 12/03/2020 18:42

@LuxLFC because WHO are looking to protect people's lives while British experts are looking to protect the economy so they are more than willing to sacrifice the weakest members of the group to get the virus done over and with asap. So when the virus peaks, they're just going to say, sorry lads, you should have self-isolated forever, being old or/and sick and we have no breathing support for you anyway, let alone beds. Just try to breath calmly if you can.

ChristmasFlint · 12/03/2020 18:42

The most crucial piece is that they've stopped testing outside hospitals. There will be no new data to make decisions on....if you think public health officials would like less data on how a novel disease transmits you're dreaming. That was a very politically motivated decision. There is also no evidence - none - that we can achieve herd immunity. People have been infected multiple times.

DoubleAction · 12/03/2020 18:43

Yes Autumn and they seem to agree with our government.

Discobar · 12/03/2020 18:43

@Wheresthebeach- they are trying to delay the impact on hospitals. It's not so hard to understand

theflushedzebra · 12/03/2020 18:44

Boris is guided by "the science and everything we do" was Boris's answer to a journo's question. But why is Boris's "science" different to the "science" that all the other European countries are being guided by?

Dressinggownofdoom - I know - his plan lets circulation increase now, whereas Ireland etc's plans try to reduce the circulation now. The latter seems more logical.

Cam77 · 12/03/2020 18:46

So people just stand by watch as the numbers spiral into 5,6,7 figures over the next 3-4 months? What the actual fuck?
And apparently, while doing this, everyone will carry on as normal so that the deaths of 1-3% of the population within a half year period don't spoil the sacred economy? That's the fucking plan?

Discobar · 12/03/2020 18:46

@theflushedzebra - probably cos they know the carnage having kids out of school for a long time will have. Older kids just wont stay out of the house and will be out causing trouble, and possibly infecting more of the population

TheMemoryLingers · 12/03/2020 18:46

I can't get my unscientific brain around a seeming flaw in the approach of waiting to implement 'drastic' measures until we hit the peak of the curve.

Surely if we implemented drastic measures now, we would push the peak of the curve back further and slow the trajectory.

So why are we not doing all we can?

That's why I don't trust Boris. And, no, I didn't vote Conservative.

happymumof22019 · 12/03/2020 18:47

I understand the decision not to close schools now I really do but why are they not recommending that people who can work from home do so? Surely this would help reduce the amount of transmission on crowded public transport? I really don’t get it. My work would be ammenable to this but only if It was govt advice. I really don’t see the downside? Can anyone enlighten me?

Discobar · 12/03/2020 18:47

@cam77 - that's not the plan at all is it. Why not listen to the press conference

theflushedzebra · 12/03/2020 18:48

So does Ireland, Denmark etc, not know that, discobar?
