Stay at home for one week if you’ve a cold (even though all evidence is that incubation is two weeks)

People over 70 don’t go on cruises.

WHAT!!!

134 new cases in a day and no action. 13 EU countries have closed all schools, another 11 partial closures but apparently no action needed in Uk.

Jesus.

What happens in Ireland when they re-open schools etc? Do they the hit the peak

They won't necessarily re-open.

At the moment most US universities have switched to online classes until specific dates, but with 'until further notice' understood by all concerned. Ireland will also play it by ear I suspect.
(In the US, fwiw, individual organisations and cities have made decisions to close down events regardless of the decisions by the numpty in chief and his science denying sidekick. Public school districts, RC diocesan schools and other private schools can decide by themselves whether to shut.)

I suspect that there will be travel restrictions imposed soon by Ireland.

Cam77 · 12/03/2020 23:10

@Really12345
Unlike China we can’t lock it down in one area while the rest of the country keeps on working
China closed schools and workplaces over the whole country, not just in Wuhan /Hebei. An area perhaps 40 times the size of the UK with 20 times the population.

rosesandcashmere · 12/03/2020 23:10

The majority that get it - will be fine in a week. I would be interested to see your ideas for containing the virus whilst not breaking the economy?

FacingtheAbess · 12/03/2020 23:10

Transmission is more likely between friends and colleagues.

🙄 Rather than big gatherings or smaller gatherings.. So work people just get it

Cam77 · 12/03/2020 23:11

“Saving lives is too hard”
What happened to this brave and resourceful Britain that was ready to take on the world post Brexit? What a fucking joke.

Cam77 · 12/03/2020 23:12

@rosesandcashmere
I prioritize preventing hundreds of thousands of horrible deaths over the fucking economy. A bit like China did.

Cam77 · 12/03/2020 23:13

@FacingtheAbess
It’s just fucking bullshit isn’t it?

LazyHensSilverClaws · 12/03/2020 23:14

@NeckPainChairSearch Exactly - you don't know. Nor do any of us. We are dealing with what is happening now.

"If Labour had formed a government at the last election, they would still be dealing with a fucked NHS, thanks to the Tories. They couldn't have fixed it in a few weeks."

Well Labour didn't get in. FFS can't you just deal with who is in government at this worrying time and put aside your political views and let's just all get on with doing the best we can?

Blimeyoreilly2020 · 12/03/2020 23:15

It really does say something when China have a more collective and humanitarian policy than us☹️

jasjas1973 · 12/03/2020 23:33

Read an on-line comment from a doctor saying that he hopes he catches it sooner rather than later so he could then treat more vulnerable patients without having to worry if he was passing on the virus

There is evidence that those that caught the milder first wave of "Spanish flu" in spring 1918, then didn't get the much more violent form that hit in the Autumn of '18.

babbi · 12/03/2020 23:39

@Blimeyoreilly2020 .. best comment ever in this very concerning subject

TeaAndDarkToast · 12/03/2020 23:40

Meanwhile, we have Dad's Army in charge..only less slower and less clued up

MinkowskisButterfly · 13/03/2020 00:01

@ILLBESUZIE I actually dint think they know much at all, everything they are saying is going against what WHO are, against countries who are stemming it somewhat. But no, we have just got to wash our fucking hands, sing happy fucking birthday and hope for the fucking best. As you can tell I am so angry with our government right now (and the idiots that are buying into this, I had one knobhead at uni compare it to death by DIY accidents, apparently there were more of them than there are death by coronavirus in the uk and therefore if people didnt boycott DIY store then you cant really complain about this governments actions, his arguments made no sense whatsoever and he is blindly following what claptrap the government are coming out with. You couldn't make this shit up!

kateandme · 13/03/2020 00:33

i would like them to be more foreceful about the small things they are advising. so not just suggesting or saying whats best.but actually saying you must wash you hands at every destination.or you must work from home if you have the snifs and cough and temp.
and stopping saying most of us will be fine.thats not the point.yes those that will be fine will be,but its then who they will be passing it to that matters.
for my sister that will be fine she will be coming into the house and killing my disabled sister.so its not at all about who will be fine.its who wont be that get it passed on to them.

NeckPainChairSearch · 13/03/2020 00:47

FFS can't you just deal with who is in government at this worrying time and put aside your political views and let's just all get on with doing the best we can?

Ha. You asked me what I thought a different party would do. I answered you.

Politics governs every single aspect of our lives. It is intrinsically enmeshed in this entire crisis. Of course political views cannot be 'put aside.'

Politics will inform every single step of what happens now. It has precisely nothing to do with anyone's individual desire to get on with anything. Of course we will all do our best.

I have absolutely no idea what your point is, to be honest. You asked us all to stop saying nasty things about the Tories, I think.

Freezingold · 13/03/2020 01:12

@Blimeyoreilly2020 sadly I do think you may be right. I am increasingly concerned. Hearing of people having to self isolate because they are vulnerable. Sad

Freezingold · 13/03/2020 01:27

@nellodee totally agree with most of your points!

AnotherMurkyDay · 13/03/2020 01:42

@TeaAndDarkToast

I feel like our countries being run by the Etonian version of Delboy and Rodney

Freezingold · 13/03/2020 01:54

@Cam77
What make you think they will reopen schools in the midst of a pandemic? Ireland is taking this seriously.
Agree with all your points. Plus facts! Glad to feel not alone.

Did you all see Jeremy hunts speech? Quite remarkable.

TeaAndDarkToast · 13/03/2020 01:57

When did Boris qualify in Medicine? I'm not listening to him.
He has literally washed his hands.

theflushedzebra · 13/03/2020 02:15

Jeremy Hunt.

Never thought I'd see the day he looked so terrified, or spoke so much sense. He knows what's happening.

StillDisappointed · 13/03/2020 02:23

My DF is a black cab driver in London. If we go into lockdown he doesn't have a wage coming in.
What are people like him meant to do? Was there any advice on self-employed people receiving help in a lockdown situation?

It's not even as if he can start putting money away now, the work has dwindled so much he's barely making enough for bills.

TeaAndDarkToast · 13/03/2020 02:27

@AnotherMurkyDay

Well, you were right.

BlackCatSleeping · 13/03/2020 02:43

There are reports that people are remaining contagious for many weeks after catching coronavirus. So, a doctor that catches it early would be a bad thing, I think. Look at the case of the Diamond Princess. Passengers completed the 2 weeks quarantine and tested negative, so were released to go home, but many of those passengers later tested positive. I think one of the biggest problems with this disease is that it isn’t the same as the flu. It’s quite different and I think this is why the advice of just hand washing and coughing into your elbow is inadequate. The only thing that has been found to be effective so far is social distancing.

Snotalot · 13/03/2020 06:34

In breaking news, Boris is going to issue everyone with a t-shirt reading 'Coronavirus - no thanks.' Followed by a hard-hitting leaflet campaign.

I can spot a dwarfer a mile off. I did try to think of an name of a government dept that would abbreviated to clitoris, but too early in the morning.

Are they really only testing people who are in hospital now? My employer has basically said you get paid if you test positive, which might be problematic unless I am at deaths door. Sound like they are trying to reduce confirmed cases. This stage should be called denial, not delay. Think the school should remain open another week, but home working should be encouraged and large events cancelled with travel restrictions. Three words: out of depth.
