Saturday night we are going to a concert in Newcastle (well we were meant to be )
We've paid for train (over £100 each ) and hotel (£150 split) and £80 ticket each.
Tonight she text saying she isn't coming as she is scared incase she catches coronavirus.
So I have nobody to go with and we only reserved hotel so I will have to pay £150 for that.
Aibu to be Annoyed?
I told her to get a grip, and was she planning on not going out till after this has gone.

@sugarhouse hope your DS is back to full health soon.

PopcornAndWine · 12/03/2020 10:55

@Figgygal

I would love to be as deluded as you. Must be very comforting.

IdentifyasTired · 12/03/2020 10:57

There seems to be a reliance on the government to tell people what to do.
Instead of listening to the government seek out advice from the scientists and health experts at the forefront of dealing with this. The WHO for example.
The government will be most concerned with preserving the economy, not the minutiae of people's daily lives.

Read up, get informed and apply some critical thinking. Then decide if it's just flu and your friend is being ridiculous or if in fact she is quite justified in cancelling.

Poppydaisies · 12/03/2020 10:58

Yes.

DominicCummingsForehead · 12/03/2020 11:02

Yes @IdentifyasTired

A friend of mine posted this on fb regarding these people waiting to be told what to do by the government:
"I wonder who ties their shoe laces in the morning.
I despair at the stupidity of the human race. No one told me not to drink bleach this morning except my common sense."

The government is trying to balance the economy with this thing...they are not looking out for YOU as an individual. Only you can do that so for fucks sake listen to the experts and take this thing seriously.

Exactly. The government are only concerned with numbers. We're all just a number, and we're all highly expendable as individuals. They don't care about 82 year old Great Aunt Betty, or your asthmatic grandson. They care about damage limitation, mostly economic.

If they want herd immunity, a good start is the public not taking it seriously. We're all expendable. It's a trade off between economic disaster, and the elderly and immunocompromised now, but as well experts and WHO keep warning, the more people are infected, the more chance of mutation, then it could start having a big impact on other demographics too.

Thankfully he’s made massive improvements and we are going home today. It’s probably not corona but it’s definitely crossed my mind. We were asked if we had traveled abroad which we haven’t so we wouldn’t meet criteria for testing. It does make you wonder though how many are being missed but I guess the next few weeks we will have a better picture. Got to admit I am now a lot more concerned about the virus after previously feeling reassured that children aren’t getting it bad if a cold can end up so bad

Figgygal · 12/03/2020 11:33

It’s not about being deluded not panicking, disaster planning and stock piling doesn’t mean I’m deluded

Doesn’t mean I’m not following advice but am also not bordering on hysteria over it

Aspoonfullofjam · 12/03/2020 11:36

Ireland has just announced a general shut down of all schools university no gatherings indoors or more than 100 people and no gatherings outside of more than 500. So that’s all concerts etc done.

I would say Uk will follow suit today.

And for those who are still persisting it’s like the flu and people are overreacting. Of course you are correct. What does the world HEALTH organisation, all doctors scientists governments and world leaders now. They’re clearly just over reacting and damaging the world economy for the fun of it (ps you’re a moron)

Stripeyshirts2450 · 12/03/2020 11:40

Yabu. It's a pandemic and people are going to die. As long as she pays her costs I don't see why you care. You won't remember it in a few months.

lindseyvvt · 12/03/2020 11:43

Can I ask everyone what there plan is ..
Will you still be going to supermarkets etc or will you buy enough to last?
I'm confused now if we should be going into town or not
Or still go until you catch it ?

I've now decided this thread is definitely a wind-up. I'm going to hide this thread, get my blood pressure down and wait for the PM's announcement. Stupid is as stupid does.........(Tom Hanks reference there folks!!)

Aspoonfullofjam · 12/03/2020 11:57

Jesus @lindseyvvt it’s not that difficult. Cancel your concert and trips to go down the pub And your cruise. Tell your friends you should all lie low for a bit and meet up at Easter. Or ask a friend round to your house instead. Don’t bother going clothes shopping for a few weeks as it’s not necessary.

If you need to go to the shop go and do a decent shop So you don’t need to go back the next day. Sanitise your hands when you get back in your car after touching trolley handles etc. Wash your hands thoroughly when you get home.

If you want new clothes or makeup just order online for delivery. You can also order food online if you want.

Check if your parents need any food. Advise them to take precautions as recommended by the government.

ffswhatnext · 12/03/2020 11:58

I've always got food in for weeks.

And as for going to the supermarket. If schools close down, like they just have in Ireland, there is no saying there are going to be enough workers to keep the stores open.

Poppydaisies · 12/03/2020 12:01

Will you still be going to supermarkets etc or will you buy enough to last?

Yes, it's a good idea to prepare and have enough food at home to last you for a couple of weeks.

daisypond · 12/03/2020 12:02

I’ve no idea what those living in temporary accommodation are meant to do, whole families in one room. They don’t have space to stock up two weeks’ worth of food.

Zombiemum1946 · 12/03/2020 12:03

Other than keeping an eye on my vulnerable lovely dad no plans.

Zombiemum1946 · 12/03/2020 12:04

The delivery lady did tell me she'd delivered 40 tins of soup, just round the corner

Mischance · 12/03/2020 12:04

It may be she has a relative who falls into the vulnerable category and she does not want to put them at risk.

ffswhatnext · 12/03/2020 12:06

Lots of families won't have the money to stock. Assuming, of course, there's anything left on the shelves. And the chances of them being able to get to a food bank will be slim to none.

CorianderLord · 12/03/2020 12:23

80% of my friends are now working from home for the next 2-3 weeks. We all work in C London. I still have to come to the office but I wouldn't be surprised if we stopped soon....

It's only the beginning.

I generally have enough food for 2-4 weeks dotted around my house even if we're on baked beans the last couple of days. Should probably buy more tofu though - don't think many will be panic buying it 😂

I have to go to work still. If they tell me not to then I will stay local to my house. If anyone I know is isolated/ the area becomes an affected area then I will remain in my flat and terrace.

Stonefancier · 12/03/2020 12:25

Ireland has just announced all schools, colleges, universities and childcare facilities are closed until March 29th, which will have a giant impact on who is able to go to work.

ThisSistineWontScreamAtItself · 12/03/2020 12:28

You had me until this one OP, because now it's clear you're being ridiculous.

Enjoy your day, I look forward to your thoughts just after 2/230pm when we are due to get an update.

daisypond · 12/03/2020 12:30

I work in central London. Home working is not allowed. Seems short sighted to me.

Vanhi · 12/03/2020 13:09

For people saying the government is only interested in money, if anyone actually thinks that the hit to the economy on this is something to be taken lightly they are very naive.

I know full well that the economic implications of this are huge. However, I've long, long been of the opinion that Tory-led governments are only interested in gaining money for themselves. So actually, they won't care if the economy does crash, so long as their investments do well. They do not care what happens to the people they govern. If they did, they would act very differently indeed, and not just with regard to the corona virus.

OP I'm well stocked anyway. I work from home as I'm self employed. I'm going out for what I consider to be essential trips - so food shopping and looking after live stock. At the moment I am also socialising, but I'm being careful about hygiene and generally socialising in small groups with people I know.

As for all the 'oh it's only 460 people in 66 million', how ignorant are you? It's 460 of those tested. We have no idea how many others are carrying it with mild or even no symptoms. According to the World Health Organisation it is now pandemic. Frankly I'll take their word over someone on the internet saying 'oh it's only a few cases'.
