And you don't think that the CMO isn't constantly evaluating things then @YoursTunbridgeWells - he's just thinking..'yeah gave a decent answer at the select committee... think I'll just coast for the rest of the month and let things unfold' Hmm

MarshaBradyo · 11/03/2020 18:48

Tunbridge I am sure they are re evaluating with the same level of expertise. If you trusted them six days ago the same is true today. They know what they are doing.

BookMeOnTheSudExpress · 11/03/2020 18:50

Evening all.
It's funny how the Italian figures are interpreted. In the daily briefing which had just finished, they gave the figures and underlined that today's seem so much worse because of the 500 fewer cases yesterday than Sunday.
Needs obviously to be remembered too that the 12,462 figure also includes the people who are now "cured" and the dead. So actual positives now is 10,590.
Though still in the thick of it obvs.

Someone asked about seeing actual numbers, rather than the graph. On the Protezione Civile live update app I link to on every thread, the first page has the numbers, the following pages the graphs.

Sunshinegirl82 · 11/03/2020 18:51

@MarshaBradyo absolutely.

There is also the fact that he is so clear about what difference (if any) some of these measure have. Often the measures don't make the difference people imagine and so on balance it simply isn't worth the huge disruption.

I'm sure Chris Whitty and his team have been evaluating the situation on an hour by hour basis and that as and when they feel additional measures are appropriate they will be introduced.

So now another death announced in Warwickshire.

This guy gives a good detailed account of how testing is failing badly.

peachgreen · 11/03/2020 18:52

@YoursTunbridgeWells Where are you getting the info the asthma is a comorbitity? I haven't actually seen that listed anywhere. (Genuine question.)

I don't think testing is that useful at this point. At least not for everyone. It would be better to get everyone who can to self isolate and act as if they ARE infected (ie not having close contact with anyone) and save the tests for those carrying out essential work (especially HCPs).

SansaSnark · 11/03/2020 18:53

@screamer1 I don't think anyone can give 100% clarity on why deaths in Italy are higher, because I think the honest answer is that we don't really know yet.

There are some possible reasons:

  • Older population with more preexisting conditions leads to worse outcomes.
-Initial spread within a hospital means many affected may have already been ill with something else as well. -Widespread community transmission that went undetected has led to the health system getting overwhelmed- and other nearby countries are also having outbreaks, so they cannot bring in medical staff from elsewhere like China. -Possibly differences in the strain?

But these are only guesses and until people are able to produce peer reviewed papers we can't know for sure.

BookMeOnTheSudExpress · 11/03/2020 18:53

Pesty- that article has been linked to, translated and (often wilfully) misinterpreted on these threads as hospitals saying they will (basically) leave asthmatics to die if push comes to shove.
Untrue of course but it upset a lot of people on here the other day.

SansaSnark · 11/03/2020 18:55

@peachgreen I think I agree with you- but that is also a tricky thing to organise.

cjt110 · 11/03/2020 18:55

@onalongsabbatical Thanks dear!! You are my personal link provider... why on earth I can’t find it on their website who knows 🤷‍♀️

SansaSnark · 11/03/2020 18:56

I've just put BBC parliament on and they are talking about coronavirus.

Jumpingintodarkness · 11/03/2020 18:56

Cultural stuff, all the hugging and kissing

emsy86 · 11/03/2020 18:56

@myrtleWilson this is the funny that some people honestly believe they are all just sitting around eating cake and drinking tea just because they haven't implemented things that certain poster feel they know more about than the experts.

You can all come out with all the posts on social media from people claiming to be in the thick of it in Italy [shocking that no one has had any posts or pictures from people in Iran so far or south Korea] and all these figures about ICU beds etc but if you honestly believe you know more than the government does about this then im sorry your a moron!

confusedandtired99 · 11/03/2020 18:56

What channel is this going to be on? Sky news?

cheninblanc · 11/03/2020 18:58

I don't know what channel sorry, I just saw it on here

peachgreen · 11/03/2020 18:58

@SansaSnark yes indeed, and I do understand why the government have to consider the wider economic implications.

NeckPainChairSearch · 11/03/2020 18:58

Often the measures don't make the difference people imagine and so on balance it simply isn't worth the huge disruption.

I wouldn't disagree with this, however, not enough information is reaching the general public about those measures and how they're being evaluated.

The 'just trust us' approach just doesn't work when faced with this particular government, and a dearth of information leads to panic and paranoia, as we're seeing.

confusedandtired99 · 11/03/2020 18:59

Sorry I’ve just seen it’s Parliament TV

SansaSnark · 11/03/2020 18:59

@peachgreen It's not just economic stuff as well. I'm not sure the government care, but e.g. closing schools leaves many vulnerable children without their main source of stability and support (and in some cases food). I do worry about some of the kids I teach if there are long term school closures.

SansaSnark · 11/03/2020 19:00

It'll be on BBC Parliament which is on iPlayer too- At the moment some guy is going on about the economic effects

SansaSnark · 11/03/2020 19:01

On now.
