Jumpingintodarkness I just feel they are being British stiff upper lip, get on with it etc. But actually we're seeing other countries and we have the opportunity to control what happens here and yet its wash your hands and he didn't even do it right!!! I'll have a chat with some medical experts all the while we sit and wait. Nothing may happen but our figures going up suggest it is going too. I'm not saying shut is down but give direction, tell us at what figure schools will close, wfh will come in, tell us the plans so we are informed and feel supported.

MarshaBradyo · 11/03/2020 18:33

Tunbridge have you watched the Chris Whitty link in the op?

At around 46 minute he explains why schools are not closed yet.

Everything he says is reasonable and measured including asking retired NHS to come back. It’s a gulf between heightened posts on here and his expertise.

HeIenaDove · 11/03/2020 18:34

@Kuponut Thank You to you and DH. Thanks

SansaSnark · 11/03/2020 18:34

I don't think there's a coverup re lack of tests- I think anyone who understands how PCR testing for viruses works understands that it's a process that has limits on it, and can't be scaled up quickly and easily. There's no cover up around that- it's just not being explained well to the general public.

We could switch to the blood test, but I have seen online that it's more unreliable. I can't find more info on this (admittedly I haven't looked very hard), but I would guess it relies on antibody numbers and so may not detect early cases.

Running both simultaneously could be an option- but even then there will be limits on the numbers we can test.

Wehttam · 11/03/2020 18:34

Sunshine for all our sakes let’s hope they are doing MORE than they can do to minimise it’s impact.

ChipotleBlessing · 11/03/2020 18:35

There is no 7pm press conference. There is an entirely standard ministerial statement in the House of Commons. You’ll be able to watch it on BBC Parliament. It will be v dull.

emsy86 · 11/03/2020 18:36

@Sunshinegirl82 its a lose lose for the government people will always say they could have done better... looking at the figures we seem to be on a slightly better curve than a lot of countries... people keep saying we need to be like other countries in Europe... those same countries that have many many more cases than we currently do even tho we are testing a similar amount to them.

Ontopofthesunset · 11/03/2020 18:39

Just read that Guardian piece by the retired doctor. If six of them were going about their daily life, they weren't as ill as he says they were. Also, if they genuinely thought they might have COVID-19 as they knew the risks, why rely on a test to change yourbehaviour? Why wouldn't you stay at home and not go about your daily life? Or does he mean other people in their group who were not ill were going about their daily life?

SansaSnark · 11/03/2020 18:39

Some clarity on deaths from the guardian:

A seventh patient has died in the UK after testing positive for coronavirus,
NHS England said. Two UK citizens had previously been announced to have died overseas - one in Japan and one in Bali.

I know their was some confusion upthread about how exactly deaths are being counted.

I feel awfully callous posting about this in this way. Obviously each individual death is a tragedy and my thoughts are with the people who are affected.

HeIenaDove · 11/03/2020 18:39

@Newjez Therein lies the problem. The way different members of JC staff will interpret the rules.

GenevaMaybe · 11/03/2020 18:40

Switzerland is following exactly the same testing protocol as the UK. I think they have to do something to reduce hordes of people showing up to be tested.

Sunshinegirl82 · 11/03/2020 18:40

@emsy86 I completely agree. I hate Boris with a passion but I watched the entire 1 hour and 40 minutes of Chris Whitty being interviewed by the select committee and my overwhelming feeling afterwards was "he's got this".

I'm not saying that once this is over and with the benefit of hindsight there won't be things we will identify as things that could have been done better. But right here, right now with the information we have I think we've got a really solid team of people running the show here.

screamer1 · 11/03/2020 18:42

Can someone please just give clarity on why Italy deaths are so high please?

YoursTunbridgeWells · 11/03/2020 18:42

@aprilhope Yesterday I said that asthma is a comorbidity for CV. It was reported in Italy that under their system, patients over 65 or those with comorbities were not even being /going to be assessed.
In the UK we have less beds than Italy, and less ventilators. (Italy has also apparently just bought a load more from China.)
If we get to that state in the UK of having overloaded, and we have the three wise men protocol that follows Italy, then those with a comorbidity eg asthma will be those not getting treatment at the point of deciding who gets the ventilator (assuming that there are others with no health issues in the queue).

Agreed it is not fact YET. However, it seems this is a likely trajectory based on another healthcare system and country that is similar to ours but further down the road in terms of number of cases.

I feel the government has a guided plan which will get us through to Easter.

Testing has been OK but not flat out to avoid panic... Numbers of cases will increase by the weekend with increased testing which will mean the public will be more resigned to any form of lockdown/restrictions going into the Easter period... NHS would also had time to adjust to the virus...

YoursTunbridgeWells · 11/03/2020 18:46

@MarshaBradyoI think that video is 6 days old now. he is good - he explains well but things are moving on hour by hour. This must be constantsly reevaluated.

ChipotleBlessing · 11/03/2020 18:46

The patients with comorbidities in Italy may not be assessed for intensive care places on respirators. They are still receiving hospital treatment and in Wuhan many patients in that situation did survive. You know this. Stop pretending otherwise.

SansaSnark · 11/03/2020 18:46

In countries with smaller populations it will be easier to test larger proportions of the population as well.

That medium article is interesting/scary- I do think some of his predictions are worst case scenarios, but it is interesting.

The twitter thread about Italian hospitals he links to is harrowing: twitter.com/jasonvanschoor/status/1237142891077697538

I honestly wouldn't read it if you are already anxious or have pre-existing health conditions. But it shows what will happen if our hospitals get overwhelemed, too.

ofwarren · 11/03/2020 18:47

The independent are saying 8 now. 2 more have died in the UK by the looks of it

Jumpingintodarkness · 11/03/2020 18:47

Sansa personally I agree it can't be easy for the government, I'm not a boris basher either, but we see very poor countries like Poland and Albania taking swift steps to stop covid and yet we are slack and loose....

MarshaBradyo · 11/03/2020 18:47

Sunshine yep and there’s not a single policy from Boris that is not coming from Chris Whitty and his team - from school closure to staff in NHS. Worth watching.

It will help people get away from wild speculation on why the government is doing what they are.
