Travelling, making other decisions around
exposure

read up, noone can decide for you, but be aware...
Your mode of transport (train/boat/plane) is unlikely to be disinfected.
You may not be welcome back at work (forced isolation unpaid because you decided to take risk)
Getting stuck in quarantine in another country, subjected to their health service and govt restrictions on you.
What happens with your dc and school upon return.
Holiday insurance cover?

Positive ways of coping

Exercise daily, out where you won't be in close proximity (greater than 2 metres)

Eat well, healthy foods, plenty of liquid

Include natural antivirals in diet and good levels of daily vit c, vit d

Rest

Take steps to address any raised anxiety, above what might be reasonable and normal steps for keeping viral hygiene under control.
Its normal to feel more anxious, and normal to take steps to manage situation by being well prepared.

Isolation Issues

Getting sufficient shopping in on low incomes, and/or vulnerable / already isolated

Keeping on top of KEY METERS - need to top up yet in isolation - what measures are there to help

Paying mortgage/rent (private & housing associations) if not receiving sick pay

Legislation that enforced isolation = sick (for sick pay purposes)

Alcohol breaks down the outer layer of virus to effectively kill, other methods may not.

retired intensive care doctor surely the clue is there... a retired doctor who will have no experience in dealing with this. but lets put his story in the papers as if its gospel.

Or...it could be a very experienced medic who can say what he thinks without fear of losing his job or being disciplined for speaking out...

YoursTunbridgeWells · 11/03/2020 18:21

@aprilhope Feel free to call me names and try to intimidate. Like you I am entitled to an opinion.

It is clear the UK is not catching enough cases by testing as the testing protocol is out of date - as WHO said it cannot be based on confirmed cases and travel history only. The UK is due to change this but you will find a lot of ancedotal examples on this website, on newpaper sites etc of people who should be tested but aren't in the queue so I don't know when the new testing regime will kick in.

It may be that 10000 tests a day capacity is also insufficient. I don't know.

I also think the WHO should have shamed the UK on the basis that other countries have already put in social distancing measures - closing colleges, schools and for example banning events of over a certain number of people. SOme of these countries have many less cases than us.

Vinosaurus · 11/03/2020 18:21

Guardian live blogs is reporting someone who flew back from Milan with symptoms who had no checks on arrival to the UK

My understanding from reading the gov.uk document outlining the response is that all planes have to confirm before landing that they have no passengers with symptoms onboard. God knows how this is policed onboard - flight attendants with a thermometer?!

aprilhope · 11/03/2020 18:25

@Yourstunbridgewells I have not called you names. I have not tried to intimidate you.

You have tried to answer my questions but you cannot. Just saying that you think the UK has not done enough does not mean that the WHO agree with you and should name and shame.

Just as you saying yesterday that the NHS would not bother treating people with asthma made it fact.

SistemaAddict · 11/03/2020 18:25

@Newjez I'm sorry you were treated like that. I'm on UC and everyone bar one person has been really lovely. I'll be due to go again in about 3/4 weeks. To me it's such a waste of time when I have to update them online regularly and could do it on the phone. I don't like going there at all especially having to walk through crowds of smokers around the door.

daffodilsandblossom · 11/03/2020 18:25

I just feel so weird at the moment, like I am in a dream and none of this is real. I went out shopping to stock up on a few things and everything seemed normal and I sort of forgot this was all happening. Then you see the empty shelves of paracetamol, hand wash, hand sanitiser, cold and flu remedies. Then you get in the car and the radio is saying WHO have declared it a pandemic and talking about how many people have it and how many people have died and it just does not feel real. I am finding it hard knowing that the whole world is currently going through this too. It just seems so bleak.

SansaSnark · 11/03/2020 18:25

@Vinosaurus I have no idea how it's policed either- really it needs to be policed before boarding, I think- they're not going to turn a plane around in the air, surely?

However, it seems like it's not being enforced.

SirVixofVixHall · 11/03/2020 18:26

What have I just read ? No quarantine for the people off the cruise ship ??.

cheninblanc · 11/03/2020 18:27

Is anyone else anxious about the 7pm press conference? I'm not normally but I want a clearer directive on this, an understanding that that are trying to stop this not just hand washing and testing. I have a sore throat, headache, work in nhs that has a testing centre, mix with others and have school children. Can I get a test, no! I want the pm to lead us to take charge. Not wash his hands and then touch the dirty tap with his clean hands re introducing the germs!! Take some charge for goodness sake..

Oakmaiden · 11/03/2020 18:27

@artisanparsnips

Can someone who knows more than me tell me if this is realistic or not?

medium.com/@tomaspueyo/coronavirus-act-today-or-people-will-die-f4d3d9cd99ca

That is fascinating and disturbing in equal measure.

Jumpingintodarkness · 11/03/2020 18:28

Wow, that's rather ageist attacking a retired a and e doctor...

Each person who is comments will always have their own agenda and perspective.
But surely an a and e doctor with perhaps a whole career behind him, has something of value to add to the mix?

Kuponut · 11/03/2020 18:28

As much as DH can tell me - key meter provision for electricity customers in isolation is being sorted out and coordinated planning for it now.

Kuponut · 11/03/2020 18:29

DH did make the comment that "there's no way Boris would be giving a blood sample to be tested (yes I know it's a swab but dramatic licence)... they might sneak in a few dozen paternity tests while they were at it" which made me giggle.

Jumpingintodarkness · 11/03/2020 18:30

Chenin, the testing protocol, flights protocol, lack of tracing etc is becoming alarming.

I wonder if some other cover up is going on? Like literally a lack of tests...

SansaSnark · 11/03/2020 18:30

I do sympathise with the government's position a bit- it is really tricky. Testing needs to be stepped up, but how do you increase capacity quickly without potentially getting more false negatives, which is unhelpful? We will never be able to test everyone, so there must be some triage and people will be unhappy with that.

Introducing measures to slow the spread is also difficult- do it too early and there will be lots of pushback and problems with people breaking quarantine and so on. Do it too late and they'll be ineffective.

They are in a bit of a damned if you do, damned if you don't situation, and actually I think WHO naming and shaming governments who are trying to follow a rational policy is not helpful.

HeIenaDove · 11/03/2020 18:31

@SirVixofVixHall Its the one rule for one and another rule for another that IMO most of the public will deem unacceptable.

FourTeaFallOut · 11/03/2020 18:31

I have no idea how it's policed either- really it needs to be policed before boarding

So, for it to work, you would have to keep people under observation before boarding for the amount of time it takes for paracetamol/ibrufen to wear off and ensure they didn't take any in the meantime and then check their temperature as they got on the plane. If someone did have a temperature then you would have to assume you just infected a whole plane's worth of passengers who were under observation.

It's not going to work, I can totally see why they don't bother taking temperatures.

Evenquieterlife33 · 11/03/2020 18:31

@cheninblanc what channel is it on?

Wehttam · 11/03/2020 18:32

Ignore them yours there’s no hope in that one

Sunshinegirl82 · 11/03/2020 18:33

Constant shouts of why aren't they doing this or that or closing schools or the borders or testing everyone or telling everyone over 60 to stay at home, or breaking down the figures more, or in a different way etc etc etc like this is all stuff no-one else will have thought of. They have explained a lot of this. It's easily available. They've got the info, we don't. So yes, sitting back and accepting what the experts say is exactly what I'll be doing.

There is going to be an epidemic, it's a given. We'll ride it out as best we can and I'm sure the CMO and PHE are doing all they can to minimise its impact.
