My DD has been invited out this weekend to a gathering to celebrate St Patricks Day. Her friend who invited her is an air hostess who frequently flys to USA most recently San Francisco. She has returned and one by one her other friends have cancelled on her, leaving just my DD and her family from Ireland. I am seriously anxious about her going to a boozy party with these dynamics, I know the risk is still small and her friend is really pissed off about the others cancelling. She has just told her friend that her mum (me) is suffering a health anxiety issue with this virus and stressing out over her going and told her to avoid me for 2 weeks after the party. Now she thinks I have ruined her friendship...I am unreasonable aren't I

Quartz2208 · 11/03/2020 18:05

I very much agree with this though from the Guardian thread

Prof Mark Woolhouse, professor of infectious disease epidemiology, University of Edinburgh, said:

The statement ...says that this does not change their advice on how to respond and that “urgent and aggressive” action is required by countries with significant outbreaks. An important word missing from that statement is “sustainable”. It is now clear that Covid-19 is going to be with us for a considerable length of time and the actions that we take must be actions that we can live with for a prolonged period.

And its that balance that we need to figure out

And more testing I think ramp that up and do contact testing so we can have a proper idea of who needs to self isolate

SansaSnark · 11/03/2020 18:05

Having said I thought we were doing alright with testing at the weekend, I have changed my mind this week. I know that we have to prioritise who we are testing, but I do think that there are people who need to be tested who are being missed, and this will cause community outbreaks.

The Netherlands have had a really sharp rise in cases over the past week or so, and I think this was due to being slow off the mark with initial testing.

I think we have done the opposite- we did well to start with, but now we are not keeping up or adapting to the changing situation.

I also think we are being too slow at reacting to the rapidly changing situation in Europe.

If we can't increase testing fast enough, we have to consider other measures to slow the spread.

emsy86 · 11/03/2020 18:05

A retired intensive care doctor surely the clue is there... a retired doctor who will have no experience in dealing with this. but lets put his story in the papers as if its gospel.

the same goes for that doctor on you tube...if anyone really thinks hes not revelling in money he will be getting from his youtube channel with all his new subscribers and views etc then your being silly.

YoursTunbridgeWells · 11/03/2020 18:08

@Michelleoftheresistance I wished they'd named and shamed the UK. It's pretty poor of WHO. I appreciate they don't want to upset countries tha t presumably fund them or become political but lives are at stake - thousands and thousands of lives.

FourTeaFallOut · 11/03/2020 18:08

Didn't someone say things would be relaxed around having to attend the job centre for UC?

It was in the budget, I think, it got to be a bit of a blur in the end but I think it was along the lines that everything can be done by phone if necessary, but you should look it up for details.

Michelleoftheresistance · 11/03/2020 18:10

Tunbridge it makes interesting watching if you have time.

They were asked straight out to name and shame. They looked at their hands and at each other, there were a few faint grim smiles, then the Exec Director said "You know who you are". Before adding a very professional statement that it wasn't how they worked with the many government states they were supporting.

A member of staff at a care home in Northamptonshire for people with learning disabilities and those with physical disabilities and mobility issues has tested positive for Covid-19, the Northamptonshire Telegraph reports.

From here: www.theguardian.com/world/live/2020/mar/11/coronavirus-update-live-news-uk-health-minister-italy-lockdown-australia-us-china-stock-markets-outbreak-latest-updates

This is exactly what we don't want to happen- I hope the residents can be protected.

Just thought I'd look at what Canada are doing as they only have 93 cases

www.canada.ca/en/public-health/services/diseases/2019-novel-coronavirus-infection/canadas-reponse.html

Sunshinegirl82 · 11/03/2020 18:12

But they have explained things clearly. They are just not doing what you think they should do.

Do you think the CMO and PHE sit by their computers at 2pm hitting refresh for the latest figures? Do you think they don't know how many people out of the random testing are coming back positive?

PHE are there for a reason. If we could simply defer to the WHO in every scenario there would be no need for the CMO and PHE.

Michelleoftheresistance · 11/03/2020 18:13

They did also mention that they work with those governments and (tactfully phrased) are suggesting where their processes could be better or more effective.

So they have been talking to the UK govt among others, it isn't that they haven't tried to tell them. They did specifically mention that limiting tests to only those with direct contact with someone from Italy/China etc was not sufficient and needed changing fast.

YoursTunbridgeWells · 11/03/2020 18:14

@emsy86 Article quotes that he is 55. OK he could have retired as long as 20 years ago. Unlikely. His concerns are very real about the poor testing done in the UK. It's all based on travel and known cases. There is community spread so everyone with appropriate symptoms needs testing.

helia · 11/03/2020 18:15

Is Matt Hancock still making an announcement at 7? Any ideas what he will say?

aprilhope · 11/03/2020 18:15

@Yourstunbridgewells why would the WHO have named and shamed the UK? You are constantly scaremongering. What is your agenda?

SistemaAddict · 11/03/2020 18:16

I really struggle with this not knowing and the wait to possibly know more. It's that vagueness again. I can't deal with maybes unless I'm in control of the maybes. Sounds silly perhaps. If we knew there was going to be something definite that is going to change then I'd feel a lot happier. And I'm waffling now because I'm nervous Blush

SansaSnark · 11/03/2020 18:16

Guardian live blogs is reporting someone who flew back from Milan with symptoms who had no checks on arrival to the UK- www.theguardian.com/world/live/2020/mar/11/coronavirus-update-live-news-uk-health-minister-italy-lockdown-australia-us-china-stock-markets-outbreak-latest-updates?page=with:block-5e692a2f8f085f0b8d9469ee#block-5e692a2f8f085f0b8d9469ee

This is not reassuring.

FourTeaFallOut · 11/03/2020 18:17

But @Sunshinegirl82 you suggested, in a particularly fucking rude way, that we should all sit back and defer to the experts as though there were no disparity among the experts, as though there were no room to consider the wildly different approaches from these two authorities who are renowned experts with real life consequences.

I mean, if you don't like people talking about this stuff, maybe you are in the wrong place?

defthand · 11/03/2020 18:17

@emsy86

I’ll take a retired intensive care doctor’s word over yours, thanks.

I have heard talk there is a government suppression order out on this, so don’t expect to hear the full truth from anyone in the know.

SistemaAddict · 11/03/2020 18:18

Maybe consistent would be a better word than clear then?

emsy86 · 11/03/2020 18:18

@YoursTunbridgeWells one minute you are all saying you are worried the NHS will be swamped with peoplem, next you are wanting them to test every single person that coughs or has a fever

SansaSnark · 11/03/2020 18:18

To be fair to the government, testing everyone in the country with cold and flu symptoms is literally impossible. Tests would just back up, and people with cases would have delays in getting their results back.

I do think we need to find a way to step up our testing ASAP, but testing everyone is not a viable option and never will be.

The new advice that anyone admitted to hospital with relevant symptoms is a good start and will help us get a picture of community spread.

Newjez · 11/03/2020 18:18

@Bercows

I'm on jobseekers not UC and I called them to discuss phone appointment. Long time in queue. Person I spoke to was very snooty. Asked have I been told I need to isolate. I said I could call my lymphoma nurse and ask her to confirm what I already know, but I'm guessing she has better things to do. They said they would call me back.

emsy86 · 11/03/2020 18:19

@defthand

and whats your source for that? a facebook friends aunties cousins binman told you?

SirVixofVixHall · 11/03/2020 18:20

Friend flew from Rome yesterday, having been in Florence, no checks or information given on landing in the UK.
