@LittleRen yes let’s be positive about something The number of daily tests from Uk is very good!

BackInTime · 11/03/2020 17:28

@ofwarren The Italy figures are pretty shocking, yet still people are in denial. If anyone says 'it's only a bad cold or flu' to me again I will scream.

Loppy10 · 11/03/2020 17:29

Rumours that the announcement will be about a (belated) move to the next phase, involving selected school and public gathering closures. Hospital staff being briefed as we speak on turning unused wards and operating theatres into makeshift ICUs, staffed by non ICU doctors (even pathologists and haematologists who don't normally have any direct patient contact) are being drafted in. Refresher training being held in handling public disaster/terrorism incidents involving multiple casualties .

This is going to scare a lot of people. Moving from virtually no protective measures to this is much worse than if they'd just acknowledged the seriousness of the outbreak at the beginning rather than just telling us to wash our hands.

Sunshinegirl82 · 11/03/2020 17:29

Have you watched the video of Chris Whitty being questioned by the select committee? He sets his reasoning for everything out very clearly. These people are not idiots, if you've thought about it so have they.

RedToothBrush · 11/03/2020 17:31

Helen Branswell @helenbranswell
^1. Declaring a pandemic "is not an escape clause for mitigation," says @WHO @DrMikeRyan. Unless countries try aggressively to limit spread, health systems will be overwhelmed, he says.
Says European countries need to review strategies as number start to climb.^

2. I've just been informed @WHO isn't "declaring" a pandemic, but will describe the #Covid19 outbreak as a pandemic going forward.
Still acknowledging what the virus has made clear: It has global aspirations.

3. "We have observation that tells us ... there's a real chance to blunt the curve.
There's a real chance to bend the curve" of #Covid19's impact, says @DrMikeRyan. Challenges the claims that contact tracing can't be done. "We need to reach a bit future," he said.

4. Contact tracing of people who've been exposed to the virus that causes #Covid19 would cost less than the social & economic disruption of shutting down society, @WHO's @DrMikeRyan* says. "Be creative.... Mobilize your forces," says @mvankerkhove*. "It's a matter of will."

"We have several countries now that have demonstrated the ability to turn the tide to reduce transmission”, says @mvankerkhove. "What we’re seeing what’s successful are the fundamentals of public health measures”: contact tracing, isolation, social distancing, hand hygiene...

6. Reporter: Which countries aren't doing enough to control #Covid19?
@WHO @DrMikeRyan: You know who you are.

7. Countries that are not testing broadly enough for #Covid19 need to do more testing, @DrMikeRyan says. Some countries have been too quick to give up on contact tracing. Some haven't been communicating well with their populations, sending mixed messages to their people.

8. Epidemics are a stress test for systems, @WHO @DrMikeRyan. Testing our resiliency.
Wouldn't single countries out but "I don't think anyone's scoring 100% now & neither is WHO. So we have to get on & get better at what we do."

aprilhope · 11/03/2020 17:31

I'm constantly amazed at how many people on this thread have more knowledge on how to manage an epidemic/pandemic than the experts.

LittleRen · 11/03/2020 17:33

@Loppy10 where are the rumours coming from? Wouldn’t the PM make an announcement on the scale not the HM?

emsy86 · 11/03/2020 17:34

@todayisnottuesday hasnt our government put 30 billion towards helping our own country let alonE the whole of the EU?

cologne4711 · 11/03/2020 17:35

My ds knows my card PINs if he needs money and we are ill. Good point though, I will add money to each account so there's plenty of money there.

I don't get the herd immunity thing either with coronavirus

You would be immune to this virus. But if it mutates, or a new one evolves, you won't be immune to that. Just like any other cold virus.

onlinelinda · 11/03/2020 17:35

@Changedmyname84 , so to be clear, are you saying that you have heard informally from a number of doctors that it is their view that elderly people and those with comorbidities should self isolate now?

Jaxhog · 11/03/2020 17:35

There is absolutely no point in getting tested unless you realistically believe you've been in contact with a carrier. All this will do is to clog up the health services and tell you that ON THE DAY YOU WERE TESTED you didn't have it. You could catch it the next day, and the test would be a complete waste of time. I'm sure Boris knows this.

Although it's anyone's guess what will happen next week, for now, the infection rate is very low. We are talking about less than 500 hundred people out of 66 million! That is 0.01 % of the population. We should wash our hands regularly, avoid unnecessary crowded situations and carry on as normal.

UtahGirl12 · 11/03/2020 17:36

What do people think the announcement is likely to include later? And what would people like to see included?

FourTeaFallOut · 11/03/2020 17:36

Which experts AprilHope the ones who say we should be aggressively proactive in fighting the virus or the ones who say wash your hands and brace for herd immunity?

Faybian · 11/03/2020 17:36

From the WHO 58 minutes ago
"I remind all countries that we are calling on you to (1):
-find, isolate, test & treat every #COVID19 case & trace every contact"

That doesn't seem to be what our government is doing?

Quartz2208 · 11/03/2020 17:36

@Sunshinegirl82 agreed he is very clearly leading this and deciding on what to do. And if you look him up he is very well qualified for this

Loppy10 · 11/03/2020 17:37

@LittleRen where are the rumours coming from?

I work for the NHS and this is what I have heard from numerous colleagues today. Still not gospel and still rumour but a bit more reliable than the average twitter/FB scare stories - these people have no reason to lie or exaggerate to me

todayisnottuesday · 11/03/2020 17:38

Rumours that the announcement will be about a (belated) move to the next phase, involving selected school and public gathering closures. This is going to scare a lot of people. Moving from virtually no protective measures to this is much worse than if they'd just acknowledged the seriousness of the outbreak at the beginning rather than just telling us to wash our hands.

Rumours from who and from what source?

I'm an HCP - I haven't been briefed yet.

confusedandtired99 · 11/03/2020 17:38

On the topic of school closures I think they should just stop fining parents for taking their children out of school, but let them keep their school place and let the parents decide. It could reduce class numbers for when inevitably teachers are unwell themselves.

Let’s face it the fines don’t actually generate any income do they? Apparently it costs more to police than it brings in. Those resources would be better spent else where right now

Jumpingintodarkness · 11/03/2020 17:38

Yes sunshine. However when they talk about numbers for instance, I wish they would say its admit their testing scope is minimal.

If you don't seek you don't find. For weeks people have been flitting to and from Italy for instance with no checks here . And yet other countries are lighting up like a fire, because of travelers from Italy.

But we won't test.. So when they talk about numbers and when to go . I wonder what numbers they base that on.

I agree and understand what he's saying but he's looking down at the birds eye view for the wholesale country.. Just as I'm looking out for my family and what we can do to keep safe. Everyone has different priorities.

LittleRen · 11/03/2020 17:38

We did get an email from the school today explaining what would happen in the event of a shut down.

Loppy10 · 11/03/2020 17:39

@onlinelinda you have heard informally from a number of doctors that it is their view that elderly people and those with comorbidities should self isolate now?

I've already told my parents to self isolate

crispycracker · 11/03/2020 17:39

Bloody hell. 196 deaths in Italy overnight. Shocking

This snippet is from FInancial Times today:
Giorgio Gori, Bergamo mayor, tweeted: “It seems that the increase [in the number of cases] is slowing down, but it’s only because we have no longer beds in intensive care (few are added with great effort). Patients who cannot be treated are left to die”

Trump may address nation tonight from the Oval Office t.co/Xs4QoSitMS
Washington post

Jaxhog · 11/03/2020 17:39

Pardon me, that was the wrong infection rate. Ours is 0.000008%,. which includes anyone who was in Italy or China. You're more likely to win the Lottery.

Janemarpling · 11/03/2020 17:39

Must have been PHE and DFE contact as lots of schools appear to have a plan today.
