Travelling, making other decisions around
exposure

read up, noone can decide for you, but be aware...
Your mode of transport (train/boat/plane) is unlikely to be disinfected.
You may not be welcome back at work (forced isolation unpaid because you decided to take risk)
Getting stuck in quarantine in another country, subjected to their health service and govt restrictions on you.
What happens with your dc and school upon return.
Holiday insurance cover?

Positive ways of coping

Exercise daily, out where you won't be in close proximity (greater than 2 metres)

Eat well, healthy foods, plenty of liquid

Include natural antivirals in diet and good levels of daily vit c, vit d

Rest

Take steps to address any raised anxiety, above what might be reasonable and normal steps for keeping viral hygiene under control.
Its normal to feel more anxious, and normal to take steps to manage situation by being well prepared.

Isolation Issues

Getting sufficient shopping in on low incomes, and/or vulnerable / already isolated

Keeping on top of KEY METERS - need to top up yet in isolation - what measures are there to help

Paying mortgage/rent (private & housing associations) if not receiving sick pay

Legislation that enforced isolation = sick (for sick pay purposes)

       <strong>*</strong><strong>*</strong><strong>*</strong><strong>*</strong><strong>*</strong><strong>*</strong><strong>*</strong>**,

Primary mode of transmission is airborne droplets.

Sneeze or cough into elbow (or tissue and bin it). Droplets can travel 2m.

Secondary means of transmission touch.

Hand wash to
Break the transmission cycle from hand to mouth, eyes, nose, or to others, by 20 seconds plus thorough hand washing (soap and water).

Alcohol breaks down the outer layer of virus to effectively kill, other methods may not.
(Anti bacterial does NOT do this and overuse may risk bacterial resistance).

Use 70% vol alcohol to any other additive

how will those poorest cope with sick dp not able to work and sick dc?

For a a start, not all of us have a 'dp' to help in the first place, but with great difficulty no doubt, extended school closures would be an additional burden on top of the already difficult to manage periods of sickness etc

Changedmyname84 · 11/03/2020 16:54

I’ve not read all 21 threads. But I believe and speaking to NHS Doctors in my circle who all agree - the elderly and those with co-morbidities need to self isolate now.

What we need to do is slow the rate at which people catch the virus to ensure that less people have it at the same time so resources can cope.

Jumpingintodarkness · 11/03/2020 16:55

You don't have to go to a park, a play park.

You could take the two year old on a walk you know will be pretty empty.
You don't want to be touching surfaces!
But a walk where people are remote..

user1471439240 · 11/03/2020 16:56

There are only three ways a virus can be stopped spreading.
1 Vaccination of 80% of population.
2 Exposure of 80% to virus and recovery thus building natural immunity.
3 Total isolation of the entire population preventing jumping to a new host, the virus dies out.
China did 3. The West is not willing to do 3.

Jumpingintodarkness · 11/03/2020 16:56

Some nursing homes round here have stopped student workers going in on placements which is a good sign

Lumene · 11/03/2020 16:56

@Alone07 do you mind asking if that is at a state school? Would be interested in knowing what resources might be available/accessible within state school budgets.

FourTeaFallOut · 11/03/2020 16:56

These 'How will I cope with my children?' and the, "But what about my hobbies?" laments are the reason why the government think that we incapable of coping with any more drastic measures than washing our hands.

User,

Can we get immunity from covid though if people get reinfected?

Inkpaperstars · 11/03/2020 16:57

Just been reading about a case local to some of my family. Couple back from second home in Italy, didn't realise at least one of them was infected and have been out and about. Now confirmed second/ third case which appears to be relative of theirs who hadn't travelled, but who has been working in childcare for afterschool etc. I really hope they will all be ok and that spread is limited. But based on the the context it could be bad. If containing or delay is important to the government as they claim, why oh why did they/do they not take measures re all these returning Italian travellers. I expect it may be the biggest source of current cases, certainly all confirmed cases in the whole county I reference are returned from Italy. This must be being repeated across the country.

Freezingold · 11/03/2020 16:58

@Quartz2208 Whereas I agree this is what is hard for us all they dont need to at all. That isnt how government works we are not entitled to know why they make each decision that they do. I completely disagree with this. They are accountable to us, the public, and short of national security they need to be transparent, particularly about decisions that are so far reaching.

Moomin8 · 11/03/2020 16:58

This thread started off as very helpful and informative, but an influx of drama llamas who seem to be wallowing in it and ganging up on anyone who dares to offer a different opinion or object to any of the scaremongering posts all has completely changed the tone of it.

Yes. Some people are really getting on my nerves about their response to this. Stop typing 'terrifying' and trying to whip people up into a frenzy. It's disproportionate and will help nobody.

FourTeaFallOut · 11/03/2020 16:58

China did 3. The West is not willing to do 3.

China might have to do it again if our logic is proven right and we will look like idiots if they don't ...fun times.

Number12 · 11/03/2020 16:59

Yes I agree @FourTeaFallOut

ChipotleBlessing · 11/03/2020 16:59

I’m interested to know how people think the pandemic will end without herd immunity. Do you think a vaccine will be developed before then? Or do you expect seasonal changes to get it under control? Or for numbers to get low enough for containment to start working again?

ofwarren · 11/03/2020 16:59

Yes Elizabeth health minister at 7pm

Good article here on the effect of media hype/ sensationalism on those who suffer from health anxiety if anyone is interested in that.

ofwarren · 11/03/2020 17:00

I agree too @fourteafallout
Those comments give me the rage. I have to bite my tongue.

Quartz2208 · 11/03/2020 17:01

Freezingold - which is Parliament's job. If anything its as much the oppositions fault.

And in normal circumstances I do agree but this is like a war situation and in those I think it changes

FourTeaFallOut · 11/03/2020 17:01

Maybe we could all just squidge up on the summer side hemisphere and keep switching sides till a vaccines becomes available?

MarshaBradyo · 11/03/2020 17:02

China did an incredible job what percentage of their population got it?

SansaSnark · 11/03/2020 17:03

Just had an email from the school where I work about our policies for setting work in the event of the school closing. Seems like they are seriously planning for this eventuality now!

todayisnottuesday · 11/03/2020 17:03

Yes. Some people are really getting on my nerves about their response to this. Stop typing 'terrifying' and trying to whip people up into a frenzy. It's disproportionate and will help nobody.

Quite, also those posting 'facts' from 'experts', and making up their own theories/ adding up 2 and 2 and coming up with 10.

Orangeblossom78 · 11/03/2020 17:04

Don't feed the supply of the drama Flowers

Alone07 · 11/03/2020 17:04

@Lumene yes it is a state school, they have been very pro active and brilliant with hand washing and explaining to the children why without scaring them as well.
Very lucky by the sounds of it, compared to other schools.
