exposure

read up, noone can decide for you, but be aware...
Your mode of transport (train/boat/plane) is unlikely to be disinfected.
You may not be welcome back at work (forced isolation unpaid because you decided to take risk)
Getting stuck in quarantine in another country, subjected to their health service and govt restrictions on you.
What happens with your dc and school upon return.
Holiday insurance cover?

Positive ways of coping

Exercise daily, out where you won't be in close proximity (greater than 2 metres)

Eat well, healthy foods, plenty of liquid

Include natural antivirals in diet and good levels of daily vit c, vit d

Rest

Take steps to address any raised anxiety, above what might be reasonable and normal steps for keeping viral hygiene under control.
Its normal to feel more anxious, and normal to take steps to manage situation by being well prepared.

Isolation Issues

Getting sufficient shopping in on low incomes, and/or vulnerable / already isolated

Keeping on top of KEY METERS - need to top up yet in isolation - what measures are there to help

Paying mortgage/rent (private & housing associations) if not receiving sick pay

Legislation that enforced isolation = sick (for sick pay purposes)

Primary mode of transmission is airborne droplets.

Sneeze or cough into elbow (or tissue and bin it). Droplets can travel 2m.

Secondary means of transmission touch.

Hand wash to
Break the transmission cycle from hand to mouth, eyes, nose, or to others, by 20 seconds plus thorough hand washing (soap and water).

Alcohol breaks down the outer layer of virus to effectively kill, other methods may not.
(Anti bacterial does NOT do this and overuse may risk bacterial resistance).

Use 70% vol alcohol to any other additive

WHO has declared corona a pandemic now!

todayisnottuesday · 11/03/2020 16:44

Closing down schools in the UK also means some children who have no access to any of these (maybe they don’t have WiFi, no computer or need to share with sibling, no printer or no money for ink and paper, parents who need to be out working or who don’t speak English or have health issues etc), plus are not being fed school dinners, still being required to keep up with school work. It’s a very difficult decision to make as it will disproportionately impact the poorest in society.

Excellent post that I wish some would at least consider.

Jumpingintodarkness · 11/03/2020 16:45

So,.

My friend worked in a school previously closed for covid cleaning. Ie someone had it.
Now she's feeling ill, very tight chest. She called 111 and spoke to doctor who said go to local doctors. Confused so, she turned up and they treated her like a plague victim and sent her away to call 111. So... She did they asked her, is there anyone with her confirmed covid you've come into a contact with... No.

Won't test her and no further advice.
She's choosing to self isolate but she could go back to work feeling rough tomorrow!

BertiesLanding · 11/03/2020 16:45

This thread started off as very helpful and informative, but an influx of drama llamas who seem to be wallowing in it and ganging up on anyone who dares to offer a different opinion or object to any of the scaremongering posts all has completely changed the tone of it.

I agree. One of the biggest dangers is panic. Most of these 'scaremongering posts' are driven by fear, which is understandable. Unfortunately, it's even more contagious than Covid-19.

ChipotleBlessing · 11/03/2020 16:45

They’re not ‘aiming’ for 80%, they’re just accepting it’s likely to happen. How else do you imagine the epidemic being stopped? When? The herd immunity things is mentioned casually all the time. See this BBC article about the care home cocoons for an example from today:

www.bbc.com/news/uk-51828000

Number12 · 11/03/2020 16:45

"but I have a 2 year old and the thought of not being able to take him to the park for example or being strictly confined to house is awful."

No awful is your child losing one or both of its parents, the trade off worth it surely! I just don't get this attitude of not being about to stay in for a few weeks for the sake of saving lives and allowing the NHS to treat those that need it and not to have to choose who to treat or not have enough equipment because we just had to go to the fucking park!

What would you do if your child had chicken pox, would you still take them to the park? Are you THAT person?!

Jumpingintodarkness · 11/03/2020 16:46

Today, how will those poorest cope with sick dp not able to work and sick dc?

Number12 · 11/03/2020 16:46

I've just checked my child school bag, no log on details for any on line learning. That would have been great ig so...

KOKOagainandagain · 11/03/2020 16:47

Discuses herd immunity at about 19 mins

HeIenaDove · 11/03/2020 16:48

@BertiesLanding the higher expectations being placed on women rather than men is a big clue

I predicted it a couple of threads back.

MarshaBradyo · 11/03/2020 16:48

The epidemic doesn’t have to reach 80% you’re all saying they are going for herd immunity.

Of course that worst case figure has been bandied about since the beginning that is different to saying they are looking for immunity.

China is no where near that due to actions.

Other countries will take actions and have varying success.

Saucery · 11/03/2020 16:48

Another shout out for the measured and considered posters on here. Flowers It can be a great general thread about this situation, on the whole and may it continue to be so.

todayisnottuesday · 11/03/2020 16:48

Also, I reckon there's a fair few children who would be exposed to an environment where every news report/ new statistic / new claim would be fixated upon which would no doubt scare them silly. Or parents on the internet all day instead of helping them learn what they are missing at school.

HeIenaDove · 11/03/2020 16:49

YY to school closures affecting poorer kids. The food banks arent exactly heaving either thanks to panic buying.

MarshaBradyo · 11/03/2020 16:49

Honestly people are jumping the gun on what is happening.

ShanghaiDiva · 11/03/2020 16:50

@Jumpingintodarkness
The testing issue is bonkers. With an incubation period of 14 days, we don’t know if we have been in contact with someone who may now be a confirmed case, so surely better to test.
Now we have the govt with a confirmed case and other ministers not being tested because they wash their hands a lot. The mind boggles!

BackInTime · 11/03/2020 16:51

I think today's budget gave some hints about what's coming. Help for small businesses, cinemas, shops, theatres, cafes, gyms, museums etc suggests that gatherings in these places will shortly be restricted. On top of this changes to sick pay and the interest rate cut suggest the government are getting their ducks in a row for a rough economic ride during a potential shutdown.

What they really don't want is panic either in the economy or society so I am not expecting anything dramatic this evening. I am expecting gradual steps over the next week or two culminating with school closures.

NaturalBornWoman · 11/03/2020 16:52

They’re not ‘aiming’ for 80%, they’re just accepting it’s likely to happen.

80% infected has only ever been mentioned as the reasonable worst case scenario. They are not accepting it's likely at all, in fact they have clearly said that they don't think it's going to come to that, and certainly the idea that it's "the plan" is getting into scaremongering tin foil hat territory.

MarshaBradyo · 11/03/2020 16:52

It really is tin foil hat territory.

ScatteredMama82 · 11/03/2020 16:53

@RevolutionofourTime to be honest I hadn't even thought about those who rely on free school meals. Sometimes that's the only decent meal the kids get, school closures for them would be absolutely devastating :(

ditto people in violent/abusive homes. Me fretting about how I'm going to manage to work from home AND keep the kids entertained. I should appreciate how lucky I am that those are my main concerns right now.

Janemarpling · 11/03/2020 16:53

Did I hear correct?

The who leader said he is declaring pandemic due to lack of action?
