Travelling, making other decisions around
exposure

read up, noone can decide for you, but be aware...
Your mode of transport (train/boat/plane) is unlikely to be disinfected.
You may not be welcome back at work (forced isolation unpaid because you decided to take risk)
Getting stuck in quarantine in another country, subjected to their health service and govt restrictions on you.
What happens with your dc and school upon return.
Holiday insurance cover?

Positive ways of coping

Exercise daily, out where you won't be in close proximity (greater than 2 metres)

Eat well, healthy foods, plenty of liquid

Include natural antivirals in diet and good levels of daily vit c, vit d

Rest

Take steps to address any raised anxiety, above what might be reasonable and normal steps for keeping viral hygiene under control.
Its normal to feel more anxious, and normal to take steps to manage situation by being well prepared.

Isolation Issues

Getting sufficient shopping in on low incomes, and/or vulnerable / already isolated

Keeping on top of KEY METERS - need to top up yet in isolation - what measures are there to help

Paying mortgage/rent (private & housing associations) if not receiving sick pay

Legislation that enforced isolation = sick (for sick pay purposes)

       <strong>*</strong><strong>*</strong><strong>*</strong><strong>*</strong><strong>*</strong><strong>*</strong><strong>*</strong>**,

Primary mode of transmission is airborne droplets.

Sneeze or cough into elbow (or tissue and bin it). Droplets can travel 2m.

Secondary means of transmission touch.

Hand wash to
Break the transmission cycle from hand to mouth, eyes, nose, or to others, by 20 seconds plus thorough hand washing (soap and water).

Alcohol breaks down the outer layer of virus to effectively kill, other methods may not.
(Anti bacterial does NOT do this and overuse may risk bacterial resistance).

Use 70% vol alcohol to any other additive

People thinking there will be anything major in Hancock’s statement to the house have obviously not seen many ministerial statements to the house. There won’t be anything major in it. It will probably be about the testing capacity being extended, the new body which will look after people in self isolation etc. That level of thing, not school closures.

mylittlewoodenword · 11/03/2020 16:23

Isn't herd immunity 90-95% of population needed?

emelsie · 11/03/2020 16:23

Is there meant to be some kind of update tonight on the next steps to be taken or have I imagined that?

defthand · 11/03/2020 16:24

Wow that’s a big spike in Qatar. Guess hot weather doesn’t bother this virus.

Quartz2208 · 11/03/2020 16:26

@chipotleblessing agree entirely this is likely to be a quite procedural statement explaining plans that are out there already!

I still think we are a week or two away from school closures

TSMoma · 11/03/2020 16:27

I’m wondering if we are 2 weeks away from schools closing. Logistically it would make sense to extend the Easter holidays. However, trying to get people to stay INSIDE is going to be a lot tougher

FourTeaFallOut · 11/03/2020 16:27

I think I read herd immunity kicks in at 80%. But this has been going on so long now I can't remember where I read it.

Freezingold · 11/03/2020 16:27

I think what bothers me most is not being kept informed of why decisions are being made.

Why are we not implementing even incremental social distancing now?

Why are we not telling people to work from home if they are able?
And advising the over 60s to take extra precautions?

I’m genuinely interested in the reasons. Is it because they feel we only have a few weeks of economic and social ‘time’ for restrictions and have to use it ‘wisely’?

Have they modeled different outcomes comparing acting now to later? I would like them to be more transparent as to why.

Wehttam · 11/03/2020 16:28

Whilst I’m sure many school kids are excited at the prospect that schools may close, I can’t help but feel there will be a large number of those from impoverished or abusive backgrounds who will be dreading the thought of being at home indefinitely.

I’m totally on the fence about this, yes it is a good idea to minimise risk of spread but then the chaos it will bring for those without childcare or in said horrid home life situations will be just awful.

There’s the issue of children who only eat at school too, what will happen to them? If this goes ahead they have to consider every single facet.

Hmmmmm just realised that my primary aged DC has come home today with a laminated card detailing login details for an online learning website.

Oakmaiden · 11/03/2020 16:29

I would be shocked and stunned if they actually closed schools this week. Maybe in a couple for weeks, but I rather expect tonight will just be an update: "blah blah blah some community transmission blah blah hospitals being prepared blah increased testing blah in coming weeks we might do other stuff."

Freezingold · 11/03/2020 16:29

@Fourtea I think that is about right, 75-80%. However this virus can pop up in clusters etc, so I think it takes some intelligent specific measures.

Oakmaiden · 11/03/2020 16:29

Also. Wash your hands.

todayisnottuesday · 11/03/2020 16:30

Hmm. Not all of us are lucky enough to still have them . What an insensitive and ridiculous comment.

WHO says it is now a pandemic

Hoolahoophop · 11/03/2020 16:31

Just got a letter from primary with instructions for home learning in the event of forced closure so schools have probably been instructed to step up preparations.

ApricotCrush · 11/03/2020 16:31

The government are being advised by scientists and experts who, presumably, know more than us ordinary people panicking on the internet. This level of blaming them for following advice is not helpful.

No government is going to aim to destroy it's populace. Some of you need to calm down.

Agreed. I'm only skimming this thread for facts now.

Drive-thru testing has started in Wolverhampton. There must be many more of these being set up throughout the country.

todayisnottuesday · 11/03/2020 16:32

Probably no use to anyone but there was loads of hand gel in the Boots at Gatwick airside this morning.

NaturalBornWoman · 11/03/2020 16:32

Why do people keep saying "the plan" is for 80% to get it? The reasonable worst case scenario is that 80% will get infected, that's what the CMO said.

defthand · 11/03/2020 16:32

IMO they won’t close schools until we get to where Italy was a few days back, if at all.

They’ve nailed their colours to the mast: they’re prioritising the economy.

FourTeaFallOut · 11/03/2020 16:33

WHO says it is now a pandemic

As the world mutters, no shit Sherlock.

SubjectMatterExpert · 11/03/2020 16:34

Oh! WHO really were resisting declaring pandemic previously, weren’t they @LemonSucker
