Positive ways of coping

Exercise daily, out where you won't be in close proximity (greater than 2 metres)

Eat well, healthy foods, plenty of liquid

Include natural antivirals in diet and good levels of daily vit c, vit d

Keeping on top of KEY METERS - need to top up yet in isolation - what measures are there to help

What do we think of the budget measures- some might answer queries people have had on here, like not having to go to the benefits centre, being able to get sick notes from 111 not GPs, sick pay guaranteed by government for SMEs?

Not perfect, but some action at last.

My guess is they were waiting for this before announcing social distancing and other measures to avoid pissing off absolutely everyone at the same time.

kirinm · 11/03/2020 14:40

What do you think a London lockdown will mean? no transport? Working from home / school closures? Why wait until Sunday?

cjt110 · 11/03/2020 14:40

And why just London?

middleager · 11/03/2020 14:40

The announcement will be the usual- we may soon think about doing x or y

Nails it.

For those saying it doesn't look too bad, we know there are large numbers not being tested.
I understand Italy tested widely.

manicinsomniac · 11/03/2020 14:41

deft I don't think our air is magic but I do thing being (mostly) an island will slow our rate of increase down.

There seems to be evidence (from upthread, I haven't looked at it myself) that we aren't doing badly with testing compared to many other countries worse hit.

So I think there must be a positive explanation (geography) alongside the possible negative (the undetected hordes).

Hellodotdotdot · 11/03/2020 14:41

Is it not possible to pick up a self testing kit?

I'm worrying about my frail mother now. She's housebound but some of my siblings live with her and no doubt they must have had contact with an infected person by now. Shes reporting a cough and cold like symptoms, despite having had the flu jab in January.

defthand · 11/03/2020 14:42

This government will NOT lockdown London with so few reported cases.

Fourducksate · 11/03/2020 14:42

@nancypineapple

I hope your'e okay, please if you are worried do call an ambulance, or 111 and say you need to take her to hospital. Children are tricky as one minute they can be really ill and the next improve dramatically. It can also go the other way too. Flowers

Does anyone else feel that they're in a parallel universe? I feel a bit like Cassandra, knowing that this is just the start but no one believes me. I saw a friend today briefly and she hardly acknowledged what was going on and someone else I saw, was worrying about getting to Spain over half term!

I am so hoping that the uni I work in, will be closed soon, I think the nursing students will be called in to help soon too.

Good news, is that DS's friend who came back from Italy on Monday with school, is self isolating at home with his dad, his mum and sister have moved out to stay with relatives - sensible.

MotherOfDragonite · 11/03/2020 14:47

@Number12 My children's last day at school/nursery will be this Friday. I don't think it's safe any more. I may be more risk averse because I am a single parent and I am worried about getting ill and being unable to care for the children. Also, we live in London near major transport hubs. So we will be self-isolating from Friday evening, with the intention of potentially going to stay with family members in the countryside 14-21 days later if things get worse here in London.

Mary1935 · 11/03/2020 14:49

I really think they do not know what they are doing and are reacting all the time.
There is clearly community spread that they are refusing to check out. Why? To keep the numbers low - to keep the economy going - to think we are fools - ironic that one of there own got it - maybe it will spread like wildfire and they will then act.
It’s a farce.

Catsrus · 11/03/2020 14:49

they can't stop the spread, they are just trying to slow it down as much as possible so that the NHS is not overwhelmed.

You can't test randomly because you only get the viral RNA once you have symptoms, even if infected it won't show up until someone is coughing and sneezing.

Inmyownlittlecorner · 11/03/2020 14:50

Today is my DDs swimming lesson. We’re in central London & DH wants them to go because they’ve missed the last few weeks, but I’m not really happy about it. I rang the pool to ask if they’ve implemented a better cleaning regime & they told me that they’re sticking to the normal cleaning standards ( which are often non existent!). Shall I stick with my instincts & keep them home? Do I apply this to drama lessons, gymnastics etc? I don’t know why swimming seems a less desirable activity!

The numbers are rigged! The testing criteria are so tight (and now so irrelevant) that they are not picking up on the full extent of the spread.

The real numbers are much higher. You can tell from the incredibly high rate of positive tests, as a total percentage of the 1,200 daily tests. Also from the number of people who know people with symptoms of coronavirus who have asked for tests and been refused as they don't meet the criteria!

Also, the government is lying about it not being possible to spread before symptoms appear. That is just not true. This research piece suggests that "The proportion of pre-symptomatic transmission was 48% (95%CI 32-67%) for Singapore and 62% (95%CI 50-76%) for Tianjin, China." (www.medrxiv.org/content/10.1101/2020.03.05.20031815v1)

I think they are knowingly allowing it to spread, on purpose.

for the science behind the testing

cologne4711 · 11/03/2020 14:51

On Monday morning the UK and Italy, with similar sized populations, had tested similar numbers of people, but with wildly different numbers testing positive. I think we are testing enough people, unless something has changed since then.

What''s with the London lockdown story? I kind of wish it would happen as people are sitting ducks for this on public transport.

Youngatheart00 · 11/03/2020 14:52

Has anyone seen the videos of Dominic Raab (widely on Twitter) repeatedly coughing into his hands and not looking at all well in parliament today

Langbannedforsafeguardingkids · 11/03/2020 14:52

My brother's office has a case. Luckily he's a huge introvert, prefers his own company, avoids other people as far as possible and as soon as he heard turned around and went home to WFH. He WFH a lot anyway and his boss is supportive (he deals with numbers so doesn't really need anything other than a computer). The only risk to him would be shared surfaces in loos and the canteen - and he's been handwashing a lot so hopefully he'll be ok.

I am keeping my DD off tomorrow. I wanted to last week but was talked out of it by the average head in the sand person who isn't reading the science. I've read the science, I've seen MANY other countries follow it and I'm kicking myself I didn't just lie and say she was ill for the first 3 days this week.

If any of us get it I'm going to be so fed up with myself.

It might come to us via DH's work - who are being head in the sand and adhering to the WRONG WRONG WRONG PHE guidance which says you can't pass it on until symptomatic (also what does symptomatic mean in this context? Slight cough or fever?) but he's limiting in person meetings as much as possible.

I am UTTERLY SICK of being LIED to by this government and PHE.

cologne4711 · 11/03/2020 14:53

I don’t know why swimming seems a less desirable activity

I didn't go on Monday. I am not nearly as concerned as some MNers, but swimming pools, cruise ships, Centreparcs and the Tube seem like bad places to be!

picklemewalnuts · 11/03/2020 14:53

I keep popping up and saying this but...

The risks to each individual are still really low. The thing to worry about is not 'have I got it, will I get it'.

Things to worry about:

How will my household and the household of my loved ones manage
How will I/we maintain my income
How will I/we maintain health care we regularly need.

If you are an HCP then there are some extra things to worry about, your health and well-being in a stressful time.

LittleRen · 11/03/2020 14:54

How do they do the tests - are people going to the coronavirus pods for them or do public health workers come to people's homes? I know some GPs can test but those who ring 111 etc for testing. I am wondering how they are going to manage to run 10000 tests a day.

hankyspanky · 11/03/2020 14:54

@MotherOfDragonite, Well said Flowers

Bumblesbumbles · 11/03/2020 14:55

I agree with all about testing criteria being inadequate, real number being far higher and poor PHE guidance. I listened to PMQ’s, expecting lots of discussion over correct way forward but there was nothing useful and hardly any! Where is our voice in this?
