Exercise daily, out where you won't be in close proximity (greater than 2 metres)

Eat well, healthy foods, plenty of liquid

Its normal to feel more anxious, and normal to take steps to manage situation by being well prepared.

Isolation Issues

Sorry im unclear on the timeline for the MP Nadine. Did she meet with Boris prior to feeling ill or tested but unconfirmed? I assume she was infectious at that point? Was the meeting prior to Boris attending Saturday's twickenham rugby match?

Why did she continue to meet people while ill, she must have known it was a possibly if she was tested?

This is completely out of hand now.

Choux · 11/03/2020 08:16

This is a great article full of graphs and calculations based on data from China, Korea and Italy.

He estimates that 'if you are not diagnosing all cases, one death today means 800 true cases today'. So with 6 deaths as of last night that would be 4,800 cases PLUS all the increased transmission since the deaths prior to last night. Not got time to do any calcs now but I imagine that puts today's true cases close to or over 10k.

The key message is social distancing works in flattening the peak and we should be implementing it sooner rather than later. It was posted on Facebook by a friend of mine who I am supposed to be going to the theatre with at the weekend - hopefully she will understand when I cancel!

Choux · 11/03/2020 08:22

@Number12 Why did she continue to meet people while ill, she must have known it was a possibly if she was tested?

Exactly. She's no better than the N Irish football player who turned up for a match while awaiting his results.

I hope her 84 yr old mother does not have it and that Nadine makes a full recovery but seriously, a health minister should be leading by example and doing the right thing.

Unless of course the gov are just having weekly tests as a precaution and she didn't think for a second it would be positive??? Hmm

ofwarren · 11/03/2020 08:22

Our family were all diagnosed with influenza A last year by swab.

Me: ended up with pneumonia, felt like I was dying

Husband: felt terrible but could still walk around

Child 1: hospitalised for 5 days

Child 2: a runny nose, not even a temperature

Oakmaiden · 11/03/2020 08:23

Some interesting data on the availability of critical care beds in Wales. For example it looks like Swansea (pop 241000) has around 8 beds, 7 of which are generally in use. If they kicked everyone else out, they would still struggle if infection rates in Swansea went above 0.33%.

So that is not very inspiring.

Do we know what time the cobra meeting is?

BigChocFrenzy · 11/03/2020 08:27

re students in care homes:

Back in the mid-1970s, I had a holiday job working in a care home
I was 19

They called me a cleaner, to avoid any training,
but most of my work was assisting care workers in washing, bathing, toileting etc

I had no checks, just turned up to apply, was told pay and start next day
I was paid at the cleaning rate, which was about the same as other holiday jobs I had

It was the toughest work of my life, physically & emotionally
My later holidays, I didn't apply for any care jobs !

However, if I were a student now, I would apply for a temp job,
but as I was completely self-supporting from age 18, couldn't afford to work for free

It should be paid at cleaner level, not unpaid volunteer

WaterSheep · 11/03/2020 08:27

I'm very glad that testing will be expanded. I imagine there will be a huge leap in numbers in the next few days as results start coming in.

It's almost a certainty at this point, we know there are a lot more cases out there. Increasing the testing will now show a more accurate assessment of the extent it has spread.

HotPenguin · 11/03/2020 08:29

I've had some positive news from my nursery, they say if our children can't attend because they are self isolating they will credit us with free sessions to take at a later date - and since I am part time that would mean I could make up the time at work. If the children are actually ill then we won't get the free credits. I assume they are doing this to encourage people to take self isolation seriously. I wonDer if they are following govt advice or is it their own initiative. It seems like a good idea in any case.

KOKOagainandagain · 11/03/2020 08:32

Worth cutting and pasting of section of link posted by @Choux :

This is what you can conclude:

Countries that are prepared will see a fatality rate of ~0.5% (South Korea) to 0.9% (rest of China).

Countries that are overwhelmed will have a fatality rate between ~3%-5%

Put in another way: Countries that act fast can reduce the number of deaths by ten. And that’s just counting the fatality rate. Acting fast also drastically reduces the cases, making this even more of a no-brainer.

Countries that act fast reduce the number of deaths at least by 10x.

BigChocFrenzy · 11/03/2020 08:33

With regard to what the 40% "moderate" is, maybe more relevant to think of an epidemic of viral pnuemonia than flu

Moderate is quite reasonable then to describe anything up to pneumonia, so long as it can be treated at home

Michelleoftheresistance · 11/03/2020 08:36

Wtf is she doing keeping her 84 year old mother in the house while she knows she has it?!

I know that's unreasonable, there's probably 1001 reasons why it has to be like that, but there isn't much I wouldn't do rather than let my similarly aged mother risk coming near me in such circumstances. (This may also involve possibly getting a tad abrupt with my siblings if they continue to dump their germy small children on her every five minutes.)

lemonjumper · 11/03/2020 08:36

Several papers were reporting that Nadine Dorries did a surgery on Saturday with 50 attendees despite feeling ill (before she had received her diagnosis). However the paragraph seems to have been removed from several online articles now - you can see the text in the google search results preview area, but the text does not exist in the article when you click through. Hopefully that means the Saturday surgery didn't happen after all.

Langbannedforsafeguardingkids · 11/03/2020 08:36

www.flattenthecurve.com/

This is a good website - things we can all do however small to flatten the curve and help our frontline NHS workers.

I think we need to get this message across - Cheltenham going ahead, no social distancing - this is HURTING our frontline NHS and it's just not fair to them (as well as to those who will lose their lives as a result of an overwhelmed NHS).

The PP upthread who posted a link to the NHS chat forum was disturbing - they are not being supported or prepared quickly enough.

It might not be much but if we all start cancelling our social engagements to help frontline NHS staff then it's a show of support at least.

And lobbying our MPs to allow us those of us who can to take our kids out (so at least the remaining kids can have more space between them) - what they're saying makes no sense - everyone in 10 days must self isolate if have any symptoms - pretty much ALL primary aged kids have a cough this time of year....

It happened.

The health minister held a surgery in her Mid Bedfordshire constituency on Saturday, attended by 50 people

lemonjumper · 11/03/2020 08:46

@WaterSheep Yes, I've seen that it remains in several articles, but it's been removed from many others, and the story seems to be now that she's been self isolating since Friday.

From BBC:

"The Department of Health said she first showed symptoms on Thursday of last week - the same day she attended a Downing Street event hosted by the prime minister - and had been self-isolating since Friday."

BigChocFrenzy · 11/03/2020 08:47

Well, it shows what can happen atm when people continue to work & meet people when ill

It also shows that it is not just people who do this because of financial constraints;
some will consider they are too important to stay home unless confirmed positive

Maybe for a health minister; definitely not for that footballer in NI

LittleRen · 11/03/2020 08:48

papers.ssrn.com/sol3/papers.cfm?abstract_id=3549276

This is the paper by the Australian academic that the white house has poached and is using (without telling the academic!). good stuff though. Low cost social distancing measures. www.sciencemag.org/news/2020/03/how-australian-researcher-ended-spotlight-white-house-coronavirus-briefing

He does say in the article that it hasn't gone through peer review, but frankly, with COVID-19 we all don't have time for peer review. What he says is common sense.

I'm so depressed even Trump's whitehouse is pushing this and yet our government merrily sends kids back to schools where there have been COVID-19 confirmed cases. They're on a suicide mission.
