Travelling, making other decisions around
exposure

read up, noone can decide for you, but be aware...
Your mode of transport (train/boat/plane) is unlikely to be disinfected.
You may not be welcome back at work (forced isolation unpaid because you decided to take risk)
Getting stuck in quarantine in another country, subjected to their health service and govt restrictions on you.
What happens with your dc and school upon return.
Holiday insurance cover?

Positive ways of coping

Exercise daily, out where you won't be in close proximity (greater than 2 metres)

Eat well, healthy foods, plenty of liquid

Include natural antivirals in diet and good levels of daily vit c

Rest

Take steps to address any raised anxiety, above what might be reasonable and normal steps for keeping viral hygiene under control.
Its normal to feel more anxious, and normal to take steps to manage situation by being well prepared.

Isolation Issues

Getting sufficient shopping in on low incomes, and/or vulnerable / already isolated

Keeping on top of KEY METERS - need to top up yet in isolation - what measures are there to help

Paying mortgage/rent (private & housing associations) if not receiving sick pay

Legislation that enforced isolation = sick (for sick pay purposes)

Primary mode of transmission is airborne droplets.

Sneeze or cough into elbow (or tissue and bin it). Droplets can travel 2m.

Secondary means of transmission touch.

Hand wash to
Break the transmission cycle from hand to mouth, eyes, nose, or to others, by 20 seconds plus thorough hand washing (soap and water).

Alcohol breaks down the outer layer of virus to effectively kill, other methods may not.
(Anti bacterial does NOT do this and overuse may risk bacterial resistance).

Use 2/3rds vol alcohol to any other additive

Around 1 out of every 6 people who gets COVID-19 becomes seriously ill

This is wrong surely Hmm

As if 80% recover without specialist treatment, how is that 1 in every 6 becoming seriously ill???

Also, I have continually sought to find a definitive about cv19 and temperature.

WHO repeatedly reference the effects of temperature in disrupting the virus, for instance, changes of temperature from parcel despatch to receipt, is used as evidence that the virus will not survive and be acticve by the time you as recipient handle them. Many instances of such assertions, yet, also, no evidence of temperature having an effect on the virus?!?! Hmm

Sorry @comenext?

The UK figures are UK. Can you link specifically to where you mean please?

The poster was attached to the door.

Greendayz · 11/03/2020 07:38

1 in 6 is 17 percent. Their definition of "mild" means "not requiring hospital admission" Not necessary what you might mean if you said you had a mild cold

AvocadoOwl · 11/03/2020 07:39

I was just catching up with the BBC feed and this made me smile^^ Wink

'A coronavirus conference has been cancelled because of the coronavirus, according to a Bloomberg report.'

SunshineCake · 11/03/2020 07:41

Thank you very much @usernameishistory. The only issue I haven't had is a fever, though I've felt warm and checked my temperature it has been normal or slightly below my normal well temperature.

Laks0007 · 11/03/2020 07:45

I think the testing criteria is so strict because they don't want to alarm people, the real figure is probably much higher.

Also, we have less than 400 cases and look at the reaction from the banks (RBS - mortgage payments, lower interest rates). Do they know something we don't?

On a personal note, I have met a number of very selfish people. One person refused to prospone an exam ( which included 8 weeks of clinical contact- not in the UK ), because it would impact future plans if he had to come back later in the year. No consideration for the bigger picture.

ofwarren · 11/03/2020 07:46

NHS to significantly ramp up testing as UK less than a fortnight away from coronavirus peak t.co/7pQsfoFqKN

SistemaAddict · 11/03/2020 07:47

@AvocadoOwl Grinthat made me chuckle too.

I'm not doing my usual volunteering today as I still feel rubbish. I'm not any worse really but not any better either and can't bear wearing a bra as my chest feels too tight. I'd be happier if the headache would piss off as that's the worst bit. Ah crap, just realised it's parents evening for ds tonight too.

There's more cases of chicken pox at school so am eyeing up ds carefully and checking for spots. Dds have had it.

Things seems to be changing now that there's someone important with it and other MPs might be infected. Cobra should be interesting today.

I will be spending the school hours surgically attached to the sofa again.

Sunshinesky1981 · 11/03/2020 07:47

I think the problem is that a lot of people think mild flu like symptoms to mean a bit of a runny nose while laying on the sofa watching a box set. I've had flu once, didn't need hospital treatment but still felt like I'd been run over by a steamroller

picklemewalnuts · 11/03/2020 07:48

Username, we knew these figures before-
80% don't need hospitalisation- but may have pneumonia.
15% need hospital care, oxygen etc.
5% need intensive care (putting in a coma, respirators etc)

1 in 6 is just under 20% so pretty much in line with previous figures.

Blue ladies post- she was asking for MN to put a trigger warning on the thread.

Sunshinegirl82 · 11/03/2020 07:49

They've known Nadine had the virus since last week and would have known at the previous Cobra meeting on Monday it seems to me. I'm not sure it's likely to have a major impact on anything.

Sounds as though she's been able to stay at home and is over the worst so that's good news.

BigChocFrenzy · 11/03/2020 07:49

Steven Swinford@Steven_Swinford(Dep politicial editor, Times)

Nadine Dorries first felt ill last Friday as she was signing a statutory instrument which made coronavirus a 'notifiable' disease.

The full symptoms did not kick in until Saturday as she held a constituency surgery in Mid Bedfordshire.'

Nadine Dorriess@NadineDorries*

Thanks for so many good wishes.

It’s been pretty rubbish but I hope I’m over the worst of it now.

More worried about my 84yo mum who is staying with me and began with the cough today.
She is being tested tomorrow.

Keep safe and keep washing those hands, everyone.

Quartz2208 · 11/03/2020 07:49

Agree sunshinesky on the pain scale mild is 1 to 4 moderate 5 to 7 severe 8+. Mild/moderate aren’t so much how you feel but whether it’s self limiting and needs medical treatment

Lweji · 11/03/2020 07:49

As if 80% recover without specialist treatment, how is that 1 in every 6 becoming seriously ill???
1 in 6 is 15% more or less, so about 85% don't get seriously ill. No contradiction I think.

picklemewalnuts · 11/03/2020 07:50

I know about the attempt to flatten the curve, but I don't see any sign of any of those measures.

Can anyone explain? Why aren't we cancelling big gatherings, if we are trying to flatten the curve?

cologne4711 · 11/03/2020 07:50

Bank of England cuts interest rates from 0.75% to 0.25%

That's a big jump and rubbish for people who rely on income from their savings to live. And it's given them very little wriggle room if they need to reduce again. I would have thought it would have been better to drop to 0.5% today. Oh well, I'm not an expert.

Bunnybigears · 11/03/2020 07:50

Sorry if this has been covered I'm new to this thread. I am not stockpiling as 1 cant afford to and 2 apparently we are not supposed to. So if we go into an Italy style lockdown and the shops are shut, how do we get food?

usernameishistory · 11/03/2020 07:51

So 4.8 /6 will have fever, cough, tiredness (most commonly, some will have aches and pains, nasal congestion, runny nose, sore throat or diarrhea, that usually start gradually, some won't have any symptoms.

1.2 /6 will get seriously ill.

OP posts:
picklemewalnuts · 11/03/2020 07:51

4.8/6 half of these will have pneumonia

cologne4711 · 11/03/2020 07:52

Yes you see all the arguments on here about flu. For me, flu is serious and you need a week or two off work, I've only had it twice. What other people call "flu" is a cold of varying severity. For example, when the Strictly contestants say they've not trained as much this week because they've had "flu", they haven't.

myrtleWilson · 11/03/2020 07:52

I think I may now refer to MNHQ as 'the blue box ladies' - it did make me smile

BigChocFrenzy · 11/03/2020 07:52

"Is it Italy where tests are expiring before being processed"

@usernameishistory The case quoted on here was from the USA

I haven't read of any Italian tests expiring
(which doesn't mean it hasn't happened there too, of course)
