Travelling, making other decisions around
exposure

read up, noone can decide for you, but be aware...
Your mode of transport (train/boat/plane) is unlikely to be disinfected.
You may not be welcome back at work (forced isolation unpaid because you decided to take risk)
Getting stuck in quarantine in another country, subjected to their health service and govt restrictions on you.
What happens with your dc and school upon return.
Holiday insurance cover?

Positive ways of coping

Exercise daily, out where you won't be in close proximity (greater than 2 metres)

Eat well, healthy foods, plenty of liquid

Include natural antivirals in diet and good levels of daily vit c

Rest

Take steps to address any raised anxiety, above what might be reasonable and normal steps for keeping viral hygiene under control.
Its normal to feel more anxious, and normal to take steps to manage situation by being well prepared.

Isolation Issues

Getting sufficient shopping in on low incomes, and/or vulnerable / already isolated

Keeping on top of KEY METERS - need to top up yet in isolation - what measures are there to help

Paying mortgage/rent (private & housing associations) if not receiving sick pay

Legislation that enforced isolation = sick (for sick pay purposes)

Primary mode of transmission is airborne droplets.

Sneeze or cough into elbow (or tissue and bin it). Droplets can travel 2m.

Secondary means of transmission touch.

Hand wash to
Break the transmission cycle from hand to mouth, eyes, nose, or to others, by 20 seconds plus thorough hand washing (soap and water).

Alcohol breaks down the outer layer of virus to effectively kill, other methods may not.
(Anti bacterial does NOT do this and overuse may risk bacterial resistance).

Use 2/3rds vol alcohol to any other additive

When grandparents are too afraid to see their grandchildren for fear they may be carrying a potentially lethal virus, you have a fairly big problem

THIS HAS BEEN HAPPENING FOR YEARS.

There has ever been additional precautions around protections for newborns and older generations where there are bugs.

Keeping children away whilst grandad has something nasty, or GP s not visiting their DGC because of suspected chicken pox or similar.

This is routine, or has been in our family.

Just seen on the Newspaper round up on the BBC is that the Express headline is that the NHS says it can test 10,000 people per day ?!? Does anyone know where this figure has came from, as I can't remember reading it or seeing anywhere near that amount of tests being reported so far ?

DreamInLavender · 10/03/2020 23:39

Client Tonsiltis isn't contagious, no matter how vulnerable you are at the time, you cant catch it

RedToothBrush · 10/03/2020 23:40

Jaketapper @jaketapper
A first responder familiar with the situation in the Seattle area tells CNN that seven Kirkland WA Firefighters were swabbed for testing samples that were then sent to the Washington state testing lab — but there was such a bottleneck at the lab, the samples expired. 1/

2/ Those 7 firefighters now must be re-tested and remain in quarantine/isolation longer.

The first responder also says that they are being told by Life Care Center that none of the nearly 200 employees from Life Care have been tested. (65 employees reportedly have symptoms.)

3/ Life Care Center is now up to 19 patient deaths and there have been positive tests for 31 of the remaining 50 or so patients.

“The response has been putrid,” the first responder tells CNN.

4/ “While we keep hearing about increased testing availability and lifting restrictions on who can be tested, none of that is making a difference when the tests can’t be processed in a timely manner," the first responder continues...

5/ “...Tests for Firefighters, Police Officers, husbands, wives and children are being left to expire while we know the disease is spreading. This is a matter of public safety and the response is failing. Availability of tests is not equaling results.“

After you’ve had it and recovered are you immune? So you can just go about your life without fear of catching it and dying?

BookMeOnTheSudExpress · 10/03/2020 23:41

It is if it's vital tonsilitis, surely?

@DreamInLavender it was viral so I caught whatever it was that caused it and then developed an infection as I've no immune system Sad my weak point is chest/throat
I never get stomach bugs which is a blessing!

VanGoghsDog · 10/03/2020 23:43

@NotJustACigar

Thank you - that was pretty unnecessary wasn't it?

My parents live three hours drive from me, seven hours from my sister. Probably two and a half from my brother.
I work two hours in the opposite direction, I'm a contract worker so no compassionate leave, no work means no pay, and I can't go after work.

We can't sit with him round the clock - visiting hours are two til five and it's two at a time. So it's a ridiculous suggestion that we should be doing that. Plus he's been in hospital three months and we have no prognosis other than "it won't be more than a year", so are we supposed to stop our whole lives for a year? (We know it's more likely to be a few weeks but we don't have any clue how long at all)

I've already cancelled theatre trips, weekends away, and stopped my only hobby. I do need to give dp a bit of attention now and then, he booked this comedy thing for Sat ages ago. He says if we need to miss it, then we miss it, but I just have to try to balance all these conflicting demands.
He's been great by the way, driving me to parents, missing his own hobbies, staying at my parents which I know he dislikes, helping mum with stuff, doing her shopping etc

Plus I have to take into account that as I work in London and go on public transport, I could well be a CV carrier and it would be reckless to take that to my elderly mother who has health issues and into a hospital. Even if my mother does need me to fill up bloody coal scuttles!

Exochord · 10/03/2020 23:43

Tonsillitis isn't contagious
But tonsillitis is just a response to a virus. So surely you can catch the virus that caused the tonsillitis? Same as a headache isn’t contagious but you can catch the virus that’s made the person poorly and caused the headache.

Packingsoapandwater · 10/03/2020 23:44

I'm worried. Really worried.

I've just read the article about Nadine Dorries in the Mail, and read this "dry cough, high temperature and 'vice-like' pain in her chest." as a description of the classic symptoms of the Coronavirus.

I had this three weeks ago. The "vice like chest pain" scared the shit out of me. I thought it was the start of MS because I didn't have conventional flu symptoms, but as I'd been nowhere near China or Italy, it couldn't be Covid 19.

Nowhere did it say this vice like pain was a symptom of Covid-19. Nowhere. I fucking looked because I was suspicious. But everything said I couldn't have it because I'd not been to those areas.

My dd got it at the same time and seemed okay, just a cough, but the cough didn't go. So I took he to the GP surgery this morning as I was worried she might have developed a chest infection.

Yes, we took her to the GP surgery this morning. I self isolated when the vice pain was bad for four days but otherwise, I've been walking around, at meetings, at the gym, DD has been at nursery, DH at work. I've been with my parents who are over 70.

What do I do? Should I ring the GP surgery and tell them? Or am I going to sound like a loon?

ClientQueen · 10/03/2020 23:44

That's kind of my point with it I guess - if you can pick where to sit in an office, and you've got a cough/heavy cold/tonsillitis, don't sit right next to the person who you know can't fight it off Grin

ClientQueen · 10/03/2020 23:45

@Packingsoapandwater I would ring them if you have a decent GP, possibly better than 111 as you've been in recently and they're probably inundated

hankyspanky · 10/03/2020 23:45

@DreamInLavender Tonsillitis is contagious. I've been on antibiotics now for the past 2 weeks with it. The doctor took a throat swab last week as for some unknown reason, its not clearing up this time.

BigChocFrenzy · 10/03/2020 23:47

"if you take up a hobby of .... I don't know... bus seat tasting"

Or going on cruises ...

ClientQueen · 10/03/2020 23:48

@hankyspanky the only help I have is tyrozets, difflam spray, loads and loads of warm (not boiling hot) drinks, ice lollies, and bizarrely ready salted crisps. Apparently the crisps scrape the crap off your tonsils and the salt helps Hmm I don't know if it's true but I've always done it!

hankyspanky · 10/03/2020 23:53

@Packingsoapandwater I suggested elsewhere, maybe if we all phone 111 when we have genuine, valid concerns and they ask the question 'have you visited an infected country?' we reply, 'I fucking live in one'.

How on earth are any of us to know if we've been in contact with an infected person? The release of data related to places where infections are confirmed is hardly transparent.

I do wish Nadine a full and speedy recovery but, maybe this will be the kick up the arse our government need to take some drastic measures?

usernameishistory · 10/03/2020 23:54

^But they want people to get it! It's the plan!
They will close schools to slow it down a bit, not stop it....^

Reply Exactly. They can’t stop it as there’s no immunity and no vaccine. All they can do is try and slow down transmission and delay the peak

Once it seeded outside China into locally transmitted clusters...the horse has bolted.

The rest is management of keeping healthcare and economies from collapsing around the world.

Good news story China sending its equipment to Italy!

Its a world issue, and countries are helping each other where they can with sharing information, and resources. We need to do the same on an individual and community level

OP posts:
nellodee · 10/03/2020 23:55

Oh come on, surely no-one would be idiotic enough to go on a cruise? Licking bus seats actually sounds a better prospect round about now. Confused

hankyspanky · 10/03/2020 23:56

@ClientQueen i've got the difflam spray, i've been gargling with salt water and eating cheese and onion crisps!! Now on a stronger antibiotic so fingers crossed this will clear it up.

Thank you Flowers

hankyspanky · 10/03/2020 23:58

@nellodee my DM was telling me today about the 'bargain priced' cruises she's been looking at Hmm So quite possibly yes there will be lots rushing to book!!! smh.
