Travelling, making other decisions around
exposure

read up, noone can decide for you, but be aware...
Your mode of transport (train/boat/plane) is unlikely to be disinfected.
You may not be welcome back at work (forced isolation unpaid because you decided to take risk)
Getting stuck in quarantine in another country, subjected to their health service and govt restrictions on you.
What happens with your dc and school upon return.
Holiday insurance cover?

Positive ways of coping

Exercise daily, out where you won't be in close proximity (greater than 2 metres)

Eat well, healthy foods, plenty of liquid

Include natural antivirals in diet and good levels of daily vit c

Rest

Take steps to address any raised anxiety, above what might be reasonable and normal steps for keeping viral hygiene under control.
Its normal to feel more anxious, and normal to take steps to manage situation by being well prepared.

Isolation Issues

Getting sufficient shopping in on low incomes, and/or vulnerable / already isolated

Keeping on top of KEY METERS - need to top up yet in isolation - what measures are there to help

Paying mortgage/rent (private & housing associations) if not receiving sick pay

Legislation that enforced isolation = sick (for sick pay purposes)

       *********,

Primary mode of transmission is airborne droplets.

Sneeze or cough into elbow (or tissue and bin it). Droplets can travel 2m.

Secondary means of transmission touch.

Hand wash to
Break the transmission cycle from hand to mouth, eyes, nose, or to others, by 20 seconds plus thorough hand washing (soap and water).

Alcohol breaks down the outer layer of virus to effectively kill, other methods may not.
(Anti bacterial does NOT do this and overuse may risk bacterial resistance).

Use 2/3rds vol alcohol to any other additive

From the Times:

‘ Ms Dorries, 62, met hundreds of people last week, including a large number of MPs, and attended a conference outside Westminster. On Thursday she attended a Downing Street event hosted by Mr Johnson to mark International Women’s Day.’

No mention of being abroad.

MarshaBradyo · 10/03/2020 22:40

If people can’t substantiate what they are saying re asthmatic children not receiving care then they are fear mongering.

Wehttam · 10/03/2020 22:40

myrtle lol.

No I won’t when they are dismissive of the reality of the situation, they misinformation is damaging and dangerous.

ofwarren · 10/03/2020 22:41

I'm not a fan of the Tories but I don't wish Nadine to be seriously ill. She has daughters and presumably Grand children who love their nan.

MangePasTesOnglesVilain · 10/03/2020 22:41

Wettham

I'm sure ignoring is more effective than policing. Or reporting if breaking rules.

Wehttam · 10/03/2020 22:43

Absent another rude one, get of your high horse.

screamer1 · 10/03/2020 22:43

Can I ask what the theories are on Italy having so few recovered stats?

Also, is it true that they are now getting younger people? Where is the evidence of that?

Facingtheunkown · 10/03/2020 22:43

Its raging in London, It must be,

so many countries started with people returning from Italy and we dont chase people up, do landing cards, ask where they are from, or going.

Chelthnun or wherever it was today that had the 70,000 odd race meet will cause raging bush fires.

On the other hand, maybe experiencing some of our fear down here on the ground will help to FOCUS MPs minds?

“Proactive school closures—closing schools before there’s a case there—have been shown to be one of the most powerful nonpharmaceutical interventions that we can deploy.”

LarkDescending · 10/03/2020 22:43

The Guardian says Nadine Dorries fell ill on Friday and her diagnosis was confirmed today. She was apparently at work all last week working on the coronavirus situation (plus various receptions etc as has been said).

ChipotleBlessing · 10/03/2020 22:43

It’s good that she’s recovering already. Hopefully she hasn’t passed it on to many people.

myrtleWilson · 10/03/2020 22:44

You absolutely cannot frame this as believers vs non believers and not think you're not come across as an over excited junior cult member - whipping up doomsday scenarios wehttam

Sunshinesky1981 · 10/03/2020 22:44

I wouldn't want anyone, Tory MP or not to be sick.... However it is going to be interesting to see Parliaments reaction to deep cleaning/self isolation considering that we have been merrily telling school to carry on as normal and in some cases not even close for a deep clean.

YoursTunbridgeWells · 10/03/2020 22:45

@BookMeOnTheSudExpress I really really want to believe the official press conference.

The cynic in me says - this is just the sort of thing a government/offical body needs to say to calm the panic, to reassure people. I'm not saying it's lies, I'm just not sure about the level of spin. Likewise you could apply it to the reports I linked to.

My interpretation of what I think is likely to happen in the UK is based on what I see the issues with our low numbers of beds, lack of staff and equipment plus the three wise men protocol plus of course some accounts of Italy. I would dearly love to come out of this and be proved an idiot.

WhyNotMe40 · 10/03/2020 22:45

But they want people to get it! It's the plan!
They will close schools to slow it down a bit, not stop it....

Random18 · 10/03/2020 22:45

Boris was with her last Thursday! So surely she was peak contagious?

Hes not self isolating!!

QueenofmyPrinces · 10/03/2020 22:45

Rationing goes on all the time in the NHS - hard decisions are made on a daily basis as to which patient should get a bed/treatment in preference to other patients based on their likelihood of a positive outcome.

I work in paediatrics and see it a lot unfortunately.

There is just simply not enough resources to provide care for everyone when it is needed.

This Three Wise Men approach isn’t a new thing, it’s been around far, far longer than COVID-19.

Unfortunately it’s just going to be an approach that is amplified now and I really feel for the doctors who are going to have to make the difficult decision as to who gets the appropriate treatment and who doesn’t.

BigChocFrenzy · 10/03/2020 22:46

"we don't know that loads of people will need intensive care"

Mooming We do know that an unusually high % of those infected will need this, compared to say flu.
It's why it places health services under far more strain

WHO report gave their estimates using China statistics:

https://www.who.int/docs/default-source/coronaviruse/who-china-joint-mission-on-covid-19-final-report.pdf

Page 12:

80% mild/moderate disease (includes pneumonia at home !)
13.8% need oxygen.
6.1% need critical care beds

Quartz2208 · 10/03/2020 22:47

Wettham there is a difference between accepting that its not just the flu (apart from the fact the flu isnt just the flu) and that we are in for a tough 2020 that will cause normal life to pause and may have some ripple effects with the economy/NHS/tourism for up to a decade

and your view that somehow life as we know it is going to end. That misinformation is just as damaging and dangerous due to the panic and anxiety it causes

tryingtoprep · 10/03/2020 22:47

@Redtoothbrush Yes, I wondered that too. How did Nadine get tested? Has the testing criteria finally changed? (I hope so).

It's not necessarily a fear of dying, rather it's the manner of death. This doesn't sound like a particularly pleasant way to go. Tbh if the worst case scenario does happen and ICU beds are rationed, I hope those doomed to die are given a kinder way out. I have an underlying condition and I don't want to die. I don't want my elderly relatives to die, but more than anything I don't want for me or them a painful or frightening death.

AbsentmindedWoman · 10/03/2020 22:47

I wouldn't wish this disease on anyone, and I have no time for Tories.

I hope she is mild and self isolating rather than in hospital.

Random18 · 10/03/2020 22:49

Absent shes at home. And yes, hopefully it is mild.

AbsentmindedWoman · 10/03/2020 22:50

Unfortunately it’s just going to be an approach that is amplified now and I really feel for the doctors who are going to have to make the difficult decision as to who gets the appropriate treatment and who doesn’t.

Yes, this. I think there will be a lot of medics with PTSD after the worst of this hits Sad

YoursTunbridgeWells · 10/03/2020 22:50

Quote from the BBC

GPs are warning routine appointments at surgeries may have to stop as the number of coronavirus cases rises.

The British Medical Association said routine monitoring of long-term health conditions might have to stop to enable GPs to "focus on the sickest patients".

HeIenaDove · 10/03/2020 22:52

They cant really do an about turn without looking completely self serving now can they

AbsentmindedWoman · 10/03/2020 22:52

@Random18 at least it's mild.

I wonder are doctors using drugs like remdesivir or ARTs in milder patients to try to prevent worsening illness?
