Positive ways of coping

Exercise daily, out where you won't be in close proximity (greater than 2 metres)

Eat well, healthy foods, plenty of liquid

Include natural antivirals in diet and good levels of daily vit c

Rest

Take steps to address any raised anxiety, above what might be reasonable and normal steps for keeping viral hygiene under control.
Its normal to feel more anxious, and normal to take steps to manage situation by being well prepared.

Isolation Issues

Getting sufficient shopping in on low incomes, and/or vulnerable / already isolated

Keeping on top of KEY METERS - need to top up yet in isolation - what measures are there to help

Paying mortgage/rent (private & housing associations) if not receiving sick pay

Legislation that enforced isolation = sick (for sick pay purposes)

www.thesun.co.uk/news/11142710/coronavirus-italy-168-deaths/

The Sun has the median age as 80 and also sets out that

*Doctors now face having to make life-or-death decisions about who to treat, with medics told to consider a patient's age and their chances of survival.

Dr Christian Salaroli told the Brussels Times: "If a person between 80 and 95 years old has severe respiratory failure, it’s likely we will not go ahead.

"If they have multi-organ failure, with more than two or three vital organs, it means that their mortality rate is 100 per cent."*

Which having seen my Nan die early this year in hospital is just a coronavirus thing

Michelleoftheresistance · 10/03/2020 21:15

Then can we start another thread that does share anecdotal information and hasn't been thoroughly fact checked (what's the standard for that? BBC reported? WHO?) because that's likely to be the best indicators of real information over and above the carefully moderated public broadcasts.

I'd like access to the unexpurgated thread please.

Quartz2208 · 10/03/2020 21:16

"Patient 1 Mattia (young very fit 38-year old) and how then strain he put his body under by exercising so much in a short time
(2 half marathons in the week prior I think,
playing football when he already had a high temp) cold"

That program could have significantly lowered his immune system and affected his heart
Normally, that wouldn't matter, but it does if a runner is exposed to a serious infectious disease.

Running magazines have in the past warned that even 90 minute of a very hard run can lower the effectiveness of the immune system for a few days

After a marathon or half marathon, runners are usually recommended to take 2 weeks break to let the the heart recover

  • marathons can create tiny micro-tears in the heart muscles, which need this time to repair

Also, you should never exercise with a fever, as that again can over-stress the immune system

https://www.independent.co.uk/life-style/health-and-families/health-news/marathon-running-is-bad-for-you-and-its-best-to-keep-exercise-to-a-maximum-of-50-minutes-a-day-say-8369266.html

BookMeOnTheSudExpress · 10/03/2020 21:16

I think if we can avoid just linking to EVERY single thing the internet vomits out and spend half a minute googling the actual story it wouldn't be a bad thing. There are posters who just seem to run in, post a scary link and then (I imagine) sit and laugh while everyone panics. I know these threads are very fast moving and people don't have time to rtft, but I swear if I see one more link to the bloody proctologist's article I'll stick my own head up my arse. Grin

picklemewalnuts · 10/03/2020 21:16

Just a reminder that the concern isn't that individual healthy young people will get seriously ill and "oh no, we're all going to die!"

The concern is that a tiny percentage of infected people needing high level care is a massive problem for the hospitals which are already full.

Bearbehind · 10/03/2020 21:19

Then can we start another thread that does share anecdotal information and hasn't been thoroughly fact checked (what's the standard for that? BBC reported? WHO?) because that's likely to be the best indicators of real information over and above the carefully moderated public broadcasts.

Eh?

Why on earth would you want to do that?

I’m astounded by people’s desire to scare themselves shitless and hunt out the most negative stories possible, even if, and seemingly especially if, they haven’t actually been verified?

This is exactly the mentality that’s causing panic here.

BigChocFrenzy · 10/03/2020 21:20

@Bookmeonthesudexpress You keep posting " Dr Macchini is a proctologist"

Do you have reason to believe he is lying about what he saw, or that he misunderstood what was happening ?

If he is lying, I'd have thought in this situation that he'd have been struck off pretty quickly or publicly reprimanded

You've posted an official statement that Italy has no shortage of critical care beds,
but if a doctor is just inventing things, then he should be named and officially slapped down, by his employer if noone else

Freezingold · 10/03/2020 21:20

@michelle if it is to come on here and ask a valid question, I have heard this and I don’t know it’s true, but it seems likely... then fair enough?

But we all need to be aware that if we post something very worrying eg I’ve heard people over 80 will be left to die... that is obviously massively worrying and it’s our responsibility to think about how valid that is to put in the rumour mill before we know for sure.

Just my take on it though.

Just wanted to repost this @VeniVediViciTwice

nellodee

VeniVidiVici, someone said on one of these threads that children use different ICU beds to adults, and since children are not usually affected, there should be plenty of those to go round

This sounds very reassuring, and also something I've experienced.

Shaun Lintern
Health Correspondent

Shaun Lintern has an exception reputation for reporting and breaking health scandals as well on evidence based issued. He is exceptional. He is credited as one of those who broke the Mid Staffs Hospital Scandal. He is the former bureau chief for the UK Health Service Journal.

If people think its scaremongering to saying that three wise men protocols might need to be used, then they might want to check out his credentials.

patientsafetymovement.org/speaker/shaun-lintern/
This is a slightly dated bio.

Put it this way, he wouldn't be reporting this if he didn't think there wasn't a very real risk to the public. He's not in the habit of scaremongering.

As far as I am concerned he simply is the best investigative health journalist this country has.

I'm sorry if this upsets people, but there is a potential reality here which needs to be acknowledged, because if we don't and we don't put pressure on politicians, then the chances are that potential will happen.

This is a whistleblow story.

That is sexist
You don't know the sex of those making wilder assertions

  • and our notorious proctologist is an Italian man
picklemewalnuts · 10/03/2020 21:23

Is this the thread people are arguing against?

Michelleoftheresistance · 10/03/2020 21:23

Tunbridge Wells has only shared an article that's appeared on Facebook and twitter in multiple threads today, and it's been repeated in more than one other article or thread by Italian medics.

As PP says, the Three Wise Men protocol is documented and easily googlable, and in the first COBRA meetings it was discussed that the NHS would need availability to release them from usual legal boundaries if circumstances warranted it, including working hours and usual decision making processes. IF circumstances warranted it.

The discussion the Italians are talking about is that they have massively increased their ICU availability but in some circumstances where they would usually transfer patients in the hospital so severely ill that they were no longer able to breathe independently to the hospital's ICU team and life support in the hope of regaining independent breathing, there have been more people reaching that stage than equipment.

Children are currently the safest group for corona, so would be regarded as having better chances anyway than most in the case of a decision being made, and as pp says, children's ICU is a different thing to adult ones.

Is this the source people are discrediting? It's very alarming and discusses triage in Italy at the moment.

Ok- so how about a Professor of Networked Systems at UCL, is he expert enough? It's not peer reviewed given the time scale...

He says that basically all countries except Japan are following the Italian curve, including the UK.

This is not hysteria, it's a chance to change things, to prepare, and to call our leaders to account.

MangePasTesOnglesVilain · 10/03/2020 21:28

WhereStuffBelongs

I hope you have evidence for your wild frenzied and hysterical assertions.

Excuse me for getting my pink girly knickers in a twist about a serious threat of a pandemic which serious virologists are giving serious warnings about. Silly me. I should stick to do the dusting.

Speaking of Monty Python, there's a touch of The Judean People's Front fighting the People's Front of Judea syndrome here. Grin

RedToothBrush · 10/03/2020 21:29

Tunbridge Wells is getting a load of flack for pointing out what the three wise men protocol means. Very unfairly.

This is despite a very reputable health journalist was reporting that senior doctors have very real concerns that the three wise men protocol will have to be used nearly two weeks ago.

Is the penny only just dropping with people what an overwhelmed health system means? And its scaremongering to point out how much lower our national capacity is compared with other countries?

Wakey Wakey.

usernameishistory · 10/03/2020 21:29

Thanks @nellodee
No problem with projections, well worked through and explained Wink

It was because you said you noticed misinformation contained in them is all Smile

Its as well to be cautious about how far we can take projections though, bearing in mind we don't know the potential confounding factors.

I think one of the most frustrating things about tying to know and understand it is the lack source data on this, gah!!!
