Travelling, making other decisions around
exposure

read up, noone can decide for you, but be aware...
Your mode of transport (train/boat/plane) is unlikely to be disinfected.
You may not be welcome back at work (forced isolation unpaid because you decided to take risk)
Getting stuck in quarantine in another country, subjected to their health service and govt restrictions on you.
What happens with your dc and school upon return.
Holiday insurance cover?

Positive ways of coping

Exercise daily, out where you won't be in close proximity (greater than 2 metres)

Eat well, healthy foods, plenty of liquid

Include natural antivirals in diet and good levels of daily vit c

Rest

Take steps to address any raised anxiety, above what might be reasonable and normal steps for keeping viral hygiene under control.
Its normal to feel more anxious, and normal to take steps to manage situation by being well prepared.

Isolation Issues

Getting sufficient shopping in on low incomes, and/or vulnerable / already isolated

Keeping on top of KEY METERS - need to top up yet in isolation - what measures are there to help

Paying mortgage/rent (private & housing associations) if not receiving sick pay

Legislation that enforced isolation = sick (for sick pay purposes)

       <strong>*</strong><strong>*</strong><strong>*</strong><strong>*</strong><strong>*</strong><strong>*</strong><strong>*</strong>**,

Primary mode of transmission is airborne droplets.

Sneeze or cough into elbow (or tissue and bin it). Droplets can travel 2m.

Secondary means of transmission touch.

Hand wash to
Break the transmission cycle from hand to mouth, eyes, nose, or to others, by 20 seconds plus thorough hand washing (soap and water).

Alcohol breaks down the outer layer of virus to effectively kill, other methods may not.
(Anti bacterial does NOT do this and overuse may risk bacterial resistance).

Use 2/3rds vol alcohol to any other additive

Don'tgothere Just let them know tonight that you are ill and cannot care for their kids this week.
It's up to them what they do.

bearbehind they were asked to self isolate as they live with her.

Floooy174 · 10/03/2020 20:45

The best bit of advice I read today was to people who suffer from anxiety and that was to switch off the News, then off social media and put down the papers. It can’t be good this for people with health anxiety

Floooy174 · 10/03/2020 20:46

Turn off

Bearbehind · 10/03/2020 20:47

they were asked to self isolate as they live with her

Which doesn’t change the fact they could have passed it on to her

OytheBumbler · 10/03/2020 20:48

What raises my anxiety is the disconnect between what I read on here and the absolute lack of concern in rl.

No one mentions it at school, apart from the odd reminder to wash hands. The Easter show preparation is in full swing. Fb posts asking for recommendations for museums, birthday parties, Alton Towers trips.

@murraythemonk
Thank you.

NaturalBornWoman · 10/03/2020 20:50

Surely if she doesn’t go out the implication is they could have given it to her?

Seems a bit odd for a ‘fit and healthy’ person in their 60s to never go out apart from to the doctors

BigChocFrenzy · 10/03/2020 20:50

Re testing:

The UK seems to be testing quite a high number of people compared to most countries

Also, for a public health organisation that is well organised, maybe testing during an epidemic is a bit analagous to how opinion polls are done,
where a sample of 1000 people gives a result with a known error margin:

There are algorithms that specify which samples to take, to accurately represent the whole population
and how to weight them according to various factors

These weighted and extrapolated results would be processed using sophisticated statistical methods

  • which would give a much more informative picture than the raw data published -
and would be part of what the government and public health figures use to help formulate policy

This is all so difficult for my Brian to comprehend, compartmentalise and cope with I think we are all in shock a little... I’m in my 30’s I haven’t experienced Anything like this

The more I read about it all I think my simple way to see it is this, it’s viral flu/pneumonia and very contagious.... everyone will react differently to this flu/pneumonia. Some will need lots of care at home and some need hospital care. No way of knowing who. But now we know our nhs cannot help us all the way that 60year old woman got help. They will run out of machines and doctors. If your body can’t fight this off.... it’s looking grim? And I’m worried about all the people I care about. This is a bit of a nightmare

If its right that we are 2 weeks or so behind Italy and that they expect our peak to start in say 2 weeks as well.. Does that indicate that Italy it currently seeing its peak. so if we average it out they will likely be seeing about 1000 cases a day for the next 10 weeks that still will only take there total to 80,000 cases (obviously its still a bad figure) but for a bit of context that will still only be 0.0013% of their population infected... A very similar percentage to hubei province actually...

littlemissmuffins · 10/03/2020 20:54

I'm sorry for the capitals, but given how many well respected experts in both the health service and public services have clearly stated how the NHS definitely will NOT have enough icu beds, equipment, echo machines, then the wishy-washiness of the government's response on this has me both angry and extremely worried.

WHY ARE THEY NOT OUTLINING ACTUAL ACTION FOR MORE BEDS AND EQUIPMENT?? WHY?? We need them to be making plans and taking clear actions on this, not maybe this, maybe that, maybe later!! Preparation should be being done.

Exclusive: UK Scrambling To Hire 135 Trade Experts As Talks Over US And EU Deals Open
The government will need to hire at least one new negotiator every day until June to plug the staffing gap, in a situation branded "farcical and a real risk".

Boris Johnson’s government has been accused of “heading towards a cliff edge” after it was revealed ministers bidding to sign multiple new trade deals are short of 135 experts.

The UK has opened post-Brexit trade deal talks with the EU and has ambitious plans to run parallel negotiations with the US, Australia, New Zealand and Japan in the months ahead.

But data disclosed to HuffPost UK, via a Freedom of Information request, has shown the government is still desperately short of staff, with trade secretary Liz Truss aiming to fill 135 vacancies for new jobs, including policy, legal and technical experts.

Which doesn’t change the fact they could have passed it on to her

Speculation, as we don't know the facts of those who have been asked to self isolate, what we do know by factual information is that she has only been to her GP surgery in the previous 2 weeks.

With something as serious as this, lets stick to the facts and not speculation and if's and but's!

Sassenach85 · 10/03/2020 20:56

To the PP who mentioned real life vs online... YES! This is messing with my head the most I think

Sterristripoff · 10/03/2020 20:57

I have a heart condition, an arithmia and am currently undergoing tests to find out which kind of arithmia. I think comes under the banner of heart disease. Other than that I am perfectly healthy and young. (Late 20s). I’ve now found myself wondering if I would be denied an ITU bed if required because of the heart rhythm stuff. It’s really scaring me.

VeniVediViciTwice · 10/03/2020 21:00

I've been following the threads from the start and they have been helpful and up until this point wasn't feeling anxious (obviously careful in day to day life such as washing hands etc) but @YoursTunbridgeWells your posts about how they won't treat children with comorbidities such as asthma has really set me on edge (both my autistic children are asthmatic as am I).

I am going to hide this thrwad now (and the linked ones that will follow) but could I please ask posters to think carefully how you word things, what fear tactics you use etc. Please present facts (that can be backed up with reliable sources and to be conscious that you are not slipping into being overly dramatic (rich I know from someone who is now leaving the thread due to anxiety caused by words on a screen). On the whole these threads have been useful and insightful so thank you.

myrtleWilson · 10/03/2020 21:00

But bear is right in what they've said haut - the fact is they could have passed it on to her.

screamer1 · 10/03/2020 21:00

Also can I suggest that if the lady in Sunderland hardly ever leaves her house she's not necessarily going to be in the best ever health? Maybe she smoked? We don't know enough.
