Travelling, making other decisions around
exposure

read up, noone can decide for you, but be aware...
Your mode of transport (train/boat/plane) is unlikely to be disinfected.
You may not be welcome back at work (forced isolation unpaid because you decided to take risk)
Getting stuck in quarantine in another country, subjected to their health service and govt restrictions on you.
What happens with your dc and school upon return.
Holiday insurance cover?

Positive ways of coping

Exercise daily, out where you won't be in close proximity (greater than 2 metres)

Eat well, healthy foods, plenty of liquid

Include natural antivirals in diet and good levels of daily vit c

Rest

Take steps to address any raised anxiety, above what might be reasonable and normal steps for keeping viral hygiene under control.
Its normal to feel more anxious, and normal to take steps to manage situation by being well prepared.

Isolation Issues

Getting sufficient shopping in on low incomes, and/or vulnerable / already isolated

Keeping on top of KEY METERS - need to top up yet in isolation - what measures are there to help

Paying mortgage/rent (private & housing associations) if not receiving sick pay

Legislation that enforced isolation = sick (for sick pay purposes)

       *********,

Primary mode of transmission is airborne droplets.

Sneeze or cough into elbow (or tissue and bin it). Droplets can travel 2m.

Secondary means of transmission touch.

Hand wash to
Break the transmission cycle from hand to mouth, eyes, nose, or to others, by 20 seconds plus thorough hand washing (soap and water).

Alcohol breaks down the outer layer of virus to effectively kill, other methods may not.
(Anti bacterial does NOT do this and overuse may risk bacterial resistance).

Use 2/3rds vol alcohol to any other additive

Very sensible plea to US employers - and applicable to some UK employers too:

U.S. Surgeon General@Surgeon_General

Americans:
if you are sick with fever/cough/ flu symptoms, please don’t go to work!

Employers:
PLEASE understand giving your employees flexibility and (paid) sick leave will save you money in the long run

  • it’s much cheaper than shutting down because everyone else gets sick!
SunburstsOrMarbleHalls · 10/03/2020 20:25

A bit concerned at the 10 - 14 day prediction of seeing the start of the peak phase. I don't know why but for some reason I assumed it would be a few weeks later. If we are on Italy's trajectory then it sadly makes sense.

I'm supposed to be taking my 86 year old mum to see a musical in my nearest city (that currently has 5 cases) in 9 days. I broached the issue that it might not be possible and we will have to review next week but she was insistent that she wants to go no matter what. She doesn't get out much these days and has been really looking forward to going since Christmas and I think this is making her not really consider the consequences.

DD phoned before to tell me that her law firm office in London has been temporarily closed as a colleague has just been tested and is awaiting results. She is to work from home and await further news, hopefully it is a false alarm.

maudspellbody · 10/03/2020 20:26

The messaging I’m getting is to think about what you’re doing and be careful*

... and could that message be any more vague?

Yes - wash your hands (as you should anyway). Cough into your elbow (as you should be doing anyway)

But as for 'think about what you're doing' that, surely, involves keeping distance from big groups of other people - which conflicts with the failure to close down big events. It's contradictory. The implication is 'it's not that bad - and by all means go and mix in close quarters with thousands of other people - because everything is going ahead as normal'

Yes, people can take individual responsibility and not go, but it isn't individual decisions that will make the biggest impact here, it's whole community action.

Are you suggesting we should be scared? The only thing scary is this thread 😳

bercows I think many of us are looking beyond the headlines

Italy might be in ‘lockdown’ but flights are still going in and out, trains are still operating

Travellers aren’t being stopped from moving

And, let’s face it, Italy appears to be the source of a huge number of cases both here and globally so they need to take serious action

ICouldHaveBeenAContender · 10/03/2020 20:30

Here's a short summary of advice sent to my work from our safety team:

  • There are two primary methods of infection:
  1. inhalation of the airborne virus as a result of somebody coughing: or
  2. ingestion of the virus as a result of it being picked up on the hands and transferred to the mouth, nose or eyes.
  • Regular thorough washing of hands is the most effective method of preventing spread of the disease and reducing the rate of infection.
  • Hand sanitisers are a poor second choice, and should only be used in circumstances where hand washing facilities are not available e.g. when travelling.
  • Hand washing is the only means of removing dirt, bacteria, viruses etc. from the skin.
  • Hand sanitisers may kill the virus (not guaranteed!) but will not remove these from the skin.
  • Anti-bacterial sanitisers won’t work on a virus.
  • For the sanitiser to be effective it must be at least 60% alcohol.
  • If you regularly apply this level of alcohol to your hands, in a very short period of time you will remove the natural oils from the skin which will result in cracks and open sores developing on the skin.
  • Cuts, cracks and open sores will provide a third way for the virus to infect you via absorption, thereby increasing your risk of infection.
Bearbehind · 10/03/2020 20:30

and could that message be any more vague?

Because everyone would take being told exactly what to do so well wouldn’t they?

Wherestuffbelongs · 10/03/2020 20:30

Absolutely spot on!

Sunbursts If you are not happy about the risk to your own health of going there, then you should cancel and explain to her

However, imo, if you are only worried about her health, then that is her decision

nellodee · 10/03/2020 20:32

@usernameishistory I've reported my posts.

I'm sorry for making these kind of predictions, it's just the way I play things through. I like to know the numbers, or at least, what's guiding the numbers.

I find it frustrating that the models that are being used to guide the government's reaction aren't being shared with us. At the same time, I can imagine that it's quite possible that the government have modelled our reactions to sharing the model with us and decided based on the outcomes of those models that it would be a bad idea to share them. And then decided that telling us why it would be a bad idea would also be a bad idea. Confused

Cam77 · 10/03/2020 20:33

Plenty of senior officials, senior politicians and scientists have now said (on or off the record) or strongly implied, that the virus is going to spread through most the whole country. Check the DM headline for the latest from Merkel. The current stats certainly don’t back this up, but then I’ve heard plenty of hearsay, including a claim that the current stats in the UK are almost a week behind reality (ie people at home in bed waiting for a call for a test and then waiting another 3-4 days for results to come back). I think it’s about time people were told by our so called government (and those around Europe) what the fuck is going on and exactly what the plan is, if indeed there is one. Communication has been appalling. I am now sceptical that there is a plan. We could not have a worse man in charge right now, that’s for sure.

Nothing for the Twitterati and their obsession with proctologists to get excited about, sorry. Wink

I misquoted today's deaths before, sorry. 97 today. The 100+ figure I quoted was referring to last 24 hours.

BigChocFrenzy · 10/03/2020 20:34

The message should be clear;
it would be recommendations not orders at this stage

Many people would follow clear recommendations;
some other wouldn't
No strategy will cover everyone, so the govt should reach the reachable and leave the others for now.

I now have a Monty Python ear worm. Thanks for that.

I think it's the 3rd data map along (or possibly 4th) which will disappoint the horsemen of the apocalypse. The one showing a fairly substantial reduction since yesterday.

SunburstsOrMarbleHalls · 10/03/2020 20:37

BigChocFrenzy it is her health that I am worried about it but you rightly made a valid point about it being her decision.

I was also being a bit selfish and thinking that as I bought the tickets for her Christmas gift then if anything happened to her as a consequence then I would blame myself.

HaudYerWheeshtYaWeeBellend · 10/03/2020 20:37

A 60 year old lady in Sunderland (near us) has been diagnosed and is now in a coma, son has stated she was not in ill health, she rarely leaves her home and the only place she has been is her GP.

Newjez · 10/03/2020 20:37

Do you guys really think the NHS is going to pick and choose who lives and who dies?
I think you would be opening up a legal minefield here. Traditionally health care has been on a first come first served, unless greater need. I really can't see this changing. You really think they will disconnect Mrs Jones and connect Mr Smith from the ventilator because Mr Smith is younger and fitter? What if Mrs Jones is black and Mr Smith is white. You really think they would go there? They could be up on manslaughter charges.
It'll never happen.
They'll spend the next century in court and it would bankrupt the NHS if they tried.
You can get away with saying we were overwhelmed and unfortunately Mr Smith died. But to say we decided Mrs Jones should die so Mr Smith could live, it'll never happen.

AllTheWhoresOfMalta · 10/03/2020 20:38

I’ve been lurking on these threads but so far kept quiet. I’ve got fibromyalgia and have a chest infection at the moment. Feeling very unwell. Asked my GP yesterday about self isolation and he made me feel like a hypochondriac dickhead and asked me if I suffered from anxiety (for the record, no not really). I had pneumonia a couple of Christmases ago so am all too aware of how shitty that can be even if you’re youngish. I was out of action til Easter. I’ve already had to stop working as much or in the job I was trained for (teacher. Was a HOD or a core subject in a massive secondary school until I got ill) now in an office and work also being very unsympathetic about my coronavirus worries (boss told me to do whatever my doctor recommended. Clearly doctor thinks I’m a neurotic woman). Doesn’t help that fibro is seen as a fakers/nutters/womans disease anyway.

No one here can help with this- just wanted to rant. Thanks for all the info and advice. This has been a source of info unlike anything elsewhere.

Bessica1970 · 10/03/2020 20:39

The government seem very good at announcing what they ‘might’ do at some indeterminate point in the future in the hope that this might be mistaken for‘actually’ doing something!
Have they actually done anything other than tell us to wash our hands?

Wherestuffbelongs · 10/03/2020 20:40

@Lynatic

Absolutely, the figures speak volumes. Carry on...

Bearbehind · 10/03/2020 20:41

haud that article about the woman in a Sunderland clearly says 2 members of her family have been asked to self isolate

Surely if she doesn’t go out the implication is they could have given it to her?

Bearbehind · 10/03/2020 20:43

Have they actually done anything other than tell us to wash our hands?

What do you expect them to do?
