Travelling, making other decisions around
exposure

read up, noone can decide for you, but be aware...
Your mode of transport (train/boat/plane) is unlikely to be disinfected.
You may not be welcome back at work (forced isolation unpaid because you decided to take risk)
Getting stuck in quarantine in another country, subjected to their health service and govt restrictions on you.
What happens with your dc and school upon return.
Holiday insurance cover?

Positive ways of coping

Exercise daily, out where you won't be in close proximity (greater than 2 metres)

Eat well, healthy foods, plenty of liquid

Include natural antivirals in diet and good levels of daily vit c

Rest

Take steps to address any raised anxiety, above what might be reasonable and normal steps for keeping viral hygiene under control.
Its normal to feel more anxious, and normal to take steps to manage situation by being well prepared.

Isolation Issues

Getting sufficient shopping in on low incomes, and/or vulnerable / already isolated

Keeping on top of KEY METERS - need to top up yet in isolation - what measures are there to help

Paying mortgage/rent (private & housing associations) if not receiving sick pay

Legislation that enforced isolation = sick (for sick pay purposes)

Primary mode of transmission is airborne droplets.

Sneeze or cough into elbow (or tissue and bin it). Droplets can travel 2m.

Secondary means of transmission touch.

Hand wash to
Break the transmission cycle from hand to mouth, eyes, nose, or to others, by 20 seconds plus thorough hand washing (soap and water).

Alcohol breaks down the outer layer of virus to effectively kill, other methods may not.
(Anti bacterial does NOT do this and overuse may risk bacterial resistance).

Use 2/3rds vol alcohol to any other additive

I agree chipotle but we don't (and shouldn't) know where on that spectrum those poor souls who have died sit.

Bearbehind · 10/03/2020 20:09

Possibly pickled but is there evidence to suggest that’s the case?

Don’t fitter people generally survive it?

LeeMiller · 10/03/2020 20:09

@AnneKipanki if he was a doctor perhaps an issue of viral load could explain it?

There was an article in Corriere about Patient 1 Mattia (young very fit 38-year old) and how then strain he put his body under by exercising so much in a short time (2 half marathons in the week prior I think, playing football when he already had a high temp) cold have lowered his immunity.

unluckyagain · 10/03/2020 20:09

I've told the truth on this thread about people I genuinely know who have been diagnosed and either very unwell but improving or doing ok. But that isn't what's wanted here. What is wanted is dramatic stories to spread fear and anxiety.

Those of you who are fuelling anxiety and fear through unchecked facts should be ashamed.

To those of you who are terrified I stress you should leave these threads and either find the positive threads or stay away entirely.

I wish you all well.

@mamapants Any chance you could please Let me know the name of the place where they may have some sanitiser stock soon. I can’t find it anywhere and have been looking for a few days

Thanks

AnneKipanki · 10/03/2020 20:11

Yes .
I know about viral load.

Bearbehind · 10/03/2020 20:12

That really does appear to be true

There’s very little appetite here to ‘look on the bright side’ or even to put facts into context, instead preferring to extrapolate to the worst case scenario all the time

maudspellbody · 10/03/2020 20:13

I don't understand the advice. It seems to make no sense. Why the reluctance to introduce even a little social distancing? Cheltenham's happening, the Birmingham St Patrick's Day parade is going ahead at the weekend (3rd biggest in the world) and advice sent from Birmingham Local Authority to Education providers this morning was the standard 'carry on as usual. Don't close your schools for confirmed cases unless PHE says so. Wash your hands'.

And yet, you look at Italy and Spain and think 'why are we sleep-walking into that?'.
It's not as if we can't see what's potentially coming our way - we are watching it unfold in real time - and the advice is still 'carry on...no need to change your behaviour...'

This is why people are in denial - because we are being told that the sensible thing to do is make no changes at all.

Sunshineand · 10/03/2020 20:14

Do we know what causes the death of the people who die from this virus? I can't explain myself properly, so I hope someone knows what I mean.

AnneKipanki · 10/03/2020 20:14

I did not mean that to be flippant Lee .
Love your photos btw.
Are you a fan of Lee Miller. ? Derails thread.

usernameishistory · 10/03/2020 20:14

Yeah @nellodee opposite to scaremongering we have be seeing all over, head in the sand approach/denial/minimising, although I think more are erring to the scared now.

On that point, separately, this thread is no place to bring conspiracy theories Hmm

Please don't, they really do deserve a separate thread well away from the informed and rational line that contributors on here have been striving for.

Flowers to all feeling anxious, keep talking and looking after yourself. Eat healthy, rest, exercise and get involved in enjoyable other activties.

@OnTheEdgeOfTheNight thank you! That helps a lot, I will see how I am tomorrow Smile I think that’s one of the challenges of dealing with this virus, having to try to get along with others who have very different feelings about it and protecting ourselves amongst that conflict.

youkiddingme · 10/03/2020 20:16

We had to go shopping today. We picked a quietish Aldi. There were probably no more 20 other customers in the whole store. Yet I counted 3 of them cough without covering their mouth and the man who served us coughed into his hand, which he then used to scan our shopping. And yet the same store had been cleared out of painkillers, handwash etc.

I don't think people are ignoring the fact that most people recover. We all know that is the case.

The problem, though, are that we won't be able to cope with the minority who get seriously ill - and only nationwide drastic changes in behaviour can mitigate that.

It's not about not looking on the bright side. It's that the bright side doesn't make the negative effects any less disastrous. We can be positive about the good news as much as we like, but that doesn't make the bad news go away.

AvocadoOwl · 10/03/2020 20:17

That's interesting and makes a lot of sense. I trained for and ran a marathon a few years ago and it really does take it's toll on your body even when you are very fit.

Newjez · 10/03/2020 20:19

Didn't we vote against dither and delay?

Bearbehind · 10/03/2020 20:20

This is why people are in denial - because we are being told that the sensible thing to do is make no changes at all.

No we’re not

The messaging I’m getting is to think about what you’re doing and be careful

HavenDilemma · 10/03/2020 20:21

@VanGoghsDog Should I go and see them this weekend? We have tickets for a comedy thing Sat so I already have to either work round that or not go

Wow. Just wow. None of you seem particularly bothered about him at all??? When my Dad was at that stage we ALL dropped everything and were by his side daily

Poor old man Sad

fedup21 · 10/03/2020 20:21

Do we know how many people we are testing daily compared to other countries?

Switzerland was way behind us in numbers a few days ago and now has more.

Are we genuinely keeping a lid on this with our (doing nothing) measures-is that actually working as a strategy?

Bearbehind · 10/03/2020 20:23

fedup our testing ratio of positive to negative results as of today is 0.014%

That to me doesn’t indicate that if we massively increased testing we’d see a huge rise in confirmed cases

NotJustACigar · 10/03/2020 20:24

What a horrible thing to say, HavenDilemma. If VanGoghsDog didn't care she wouldn't have asked the question. And you have no idea how much she's done so far.

SistemaAddict · 10/03/2020 20:24

I've no hope of catching up in the thread and can't get rid of this headache despite good drugs. I think people are getting more anxious as they see other countries taking considerable action to contain this and all the UK is doing is telling people to wash their hands and don't shake hands.

MaxNormal · 10/03/2020 20:24

unit and one of them was in hospital for months and still has respiratory problems now, it was life changing for her and this is worse.

To reassure you, it isn't. The CFR for SARS was around 15%, it was a much more severe illness.
