I'm still in bed. DD still asleep. It's raining. Can't muster up the enthusiasm today.

expatinspain · 17/03/2020 07:50

Just discovered this thread. Hello from Elche ✋🏼. It's a miserable day today. I'm not sure if this is good or bad weather for the lockdown. Good because you don't mind staying in, but bad because it's a bit miserable and depressing.

I've been hearing that the lockdown is set to continue longer. It's going to be very difficult. I'm a teacher in an academy, who isn't offering online classes, so next month I will be unpaid if this continues. These 15 days my boss is only giving us half pay. It's a worrying time financially.

Ofitck · 17/03/2020 08:03

My enthusiasm from this morning has been quickly ruined by a 12 minute attempt to do some HIIT on YouTube.

Panicking that I couldn't breathe maybe I have the virus...

Dh "no you just haven't exercised.... ever."

Ofitck · 17/03/2020 08:07

Hi @expatinspain It's really miserable up here in the far North Atlantic Basque Country too.

I'm in a similar position as you are financially - English teacher. As autónoma I invoice the companies I teach in directly but they have all stopped. I also have a teacher who works for me as autónoma and I can't pay her. I feel absolutely awful about it but the companies aren't paying me. I've got €200 until the end of the month and then who knows. DHs salary covers mortgage luckily but mine does food and other costs. Apparently there is going to be a press conference later today about financial help..

expatinspain · 17/03/2020 08:33

Ofitck Hi! It’s really worrying isn’t it? I’m not self employed, but I’m on a temporary contract. I haven’t heard anything from the government yet clarifying the situation with pay etc. The majority of my Spanish friends seem to be in support of a lockdown lasting for a few months. For me this would literally ruin me. I don’t have Much in savings and I don’t get paid during the summer. This is the time I save money for the summer period, as the paro only pays out around 350€ per month.

BirdandSparrow · 17/03/2020 08:58

Dh "no you just haven't exercised.... ever." sounds like me, hahaha.

I got out of bed and had a shower and made the kids get up and dressed and have breakfast. Nursing a coffee now.

Are they announcing measures today? I'm an autónoma and just put my ss contributions up to 360 (was on the minimum) in an attempt to put away more for my pension, but I'm going to have to cut that back again.
I've heard rumblings about canccelling the cuota de autonomos during lockdown for those who have "been forced to close" by corona virus. Which doesn't help me, because I'm a freelane translator, so I'm not forced to close, but I haven't had a snifter of work since friday and my main client is an agency dealing with the fashion industry...all the shops are shut. My other big areas are, tourism and marketing. So, a bit fucked there too.
But I don't think I'll qualify for any help because I'm not forced to close and not even forced to close by having no childcare as I can work around them.
My gestor sent a thing out today saying don't do the baja as an autonomo before any measures are announced or you won't be eligible for the help.

BirdandSparrow · 17/03/2020 08:59

DH works in a call centre and they are still being made to go into work, with hardly any safety measures...they're all crammed in together, hot desking, hardly any hand sanitiser.....

PotsOfPebbles · 17/03/2020 09:00

DH is in tech and has a lot of tech friends that work at Vueling. They've been messaging him to say they have been told the work force is going to be cut dramatically, and they said cabin crew and other staff have been put on leave for an unknown amount of time.

Ofitck · 17/03/2020 09:18

Birdandsparrow that sounds awful - the only people I know still going into work are school management and HCPs. Surely he shouldn't be allowed to work? It's all non-essential work should be closed or WFH, isn't it?

Regarding the translations - could you have a month "off" but do the work and add it to the next bill when you go back? Or is that totally illegal?

I may not qualify for help either as apart from my autónoma teaching business, I'm contracted to work 8 hours a month in a "real school" who I think are still paying me. €190. A MONTH. I still have to pay the €283 autónoma cuota as far as I know... So maybe they'll say I'm still working so no help.

Urgh it's all so messy isn't it.

PotsOfPebbles · 17/03/2020 09:42

Our local ajuntament have said no taxes will be payable until June. That might hopefully be the case for the autonoma charge.

BirdandSparrow · 17/03/2020 10:06

I don't have any translations to do. if it comes in I do it, then I bill it. I have nothing coming in. If I take holiday, I just don't earn and then people get out of the habit of contacting me so I get even less work.

I'm worried because all the things they've said about autonomos and the cuota is people who have had to shut down. Shutting down just means I don' earn, so even if I don't pay the cuota, I still have no income. I'm better to stay "de alta" and pick up work if it comes in.

PotsOfPebbles · 17/03/2020 10:21

All the kids from the class are loving showing their pictures. They are writing little messages to their classmates on the pictures.

I definitely recommend it if you have class groups.

BirdandSparrow · 17/03/2020 10:24

My DD's class have Class Dojo, the teacher sent a msg today asking how they were all getting on and asking if anyone would like to share a picture of what they've been up to, so I shared one of DD making cookies (with her permission), bet I'll be the only one hahaha, weird guiri.

PotsOfPebbles · 17/03/2020 10:56

This has been very useful today. I've printed loads for the DC.

elQuintoConyo · 17/03/2020 11:44

Great link thanks Pebbles. A question: is their grade one our primer? DS is in tercer, I'm guessing grade three?

I'm running phone tablet and desktop scrabbling to connect with my students (TEFL teacher) and some downloadable maths would keep ds occupied while I'm video calling my students.

PotsOfPebbles · 17/03/2020 11:54

We're doing grade 3 = 8-9 years.

I'll find the conversion link for you.

This has got the conversion on.

PotsOfPebbles · 17/03/2020 11:58

I just printed loads for the DC. Addition, subtraction, division, each comes with an answer sheet so easy to quickly check though.
It's keeping them occupied nicely.

BirdandSparrow · 17/03/2020 13:06

Is is 11000 now? Fuck.

MrsTerryPratchett · 17/03/2020 13:10

Remember me from earlier in the thread? My parents are now booked on a rescue flight and hopefully getting home tomorrow. I'm just hoping they aren't bringing anything back to the UK with them.

Good luck everyone.

BirdandSparrow · 17/03/2020 13:11

Glad they are getting back, will they self isolate?

MrsTerryPratchett · 17/03/2020 13:13

They had bloody better. I checked before Brexit and they have lots of food and supplies in. And a big house. And wine. My mum is terrible for not being able to stay in so she'll be the problem. My dad would absolutely LOVE to be self-isolated. He's like a whelk.

I'll have to read her the Riot Act.
