Travelling, making other decisions around
exposure

read up, noone can decide for you, but be aware...
Your mode of transport (train/boat/plane) is unlikely to be disinfected.
You may not be welcome back at work (forced isolation unpaid because you decided to take risk)
Getting stuck in quarantine in another country, subjected to their health service and govt restrictions on you.
What happens with your dc and school upon return.
Holiday insurance cover?

Positive ways of coping

Exercise daily, out where you won't be in close proximity (greater than 2 metres)

Eat well, healthy foods, plenty of liquid

Include natural antivirals in diet and good levels of daily vit c

Rest

Take steps to address any raised anxiety, above what might be reasonable and normal steps for keeping viral hygiene under control.
Its normal to feel more anxious, and normal to take steps to manage situation by being well prepared.

Isolation Issues

Getting sufficient shopping in on low incomes, and/or vulnerable / already isolated

Keeping on top of KEY METERS - need to top up yet in isolation - what measures are there to help

Paying mortgage/rent (private & housing associations) if not receiving sick pay

Legislation that enforced isolation = sick (for sick pay purposes)

       *********,

Primary mode of transmission is airborne droplets.

Sneeze or cough into elbow (or tissue and bin it). Droplets can travel 2m.

Secondary means of transmission touch.

Hand wash to
Break the transmission cycle from hand to mouth, eyes, nose, or to others, by 20 seconds plus thorough hand washing (soap and water).

Alcohol breaks down the outer layer of virus to effectively kill, other methods may not.
(Anti bacterial does NOT do this and overuse may risk bacterial resistance).

Use 2/3rds vol alcohol to any other additive

I was lurking since the thread began. I got overwhelmed with it this morning. My emotions have shot up. Sorry sorry sorry. I promise to behave now (...and I know you're not my mum)!

naughtycat · 10/03/2020 04:53

Rocketman...

It wasn't emotional blackmail and it wasn't a joke. It's how I feel. I need to step away from these Coronavirus threads.

Rocketmam · 10/03/2020 04:55

Yeah this is getting weird. I'm out.

Thankyou to the poster who posted the twitter link. There is a second report, the doctor from Bergamo, but it is in Italian only.

Is anyone in Northern Lombardy, next to Switzerland? What is the situation there? I have someone old on holiday there Hmm Confused and there is a lot of daily commuting over the border.

TokyoSushi · 10/03/2020 05:36

Please be careful on these threads, they've been really useful and we don't want them zapped for arguments or hysteria.

Let's hope today brings a better plan.

hankyspanky · 10/03/2020 05:38

Morning @stella1Know. The border is being heavily patrolled and only health care professionals with a special pass are allowed in or out.

I have translated the report from Dr Manchinni if you want it?

TheRealHousewife · 10/03/2020 05:39

Yes please @hankyspanky

Trolltoes · 10/03/2020 06:01

On a selfish note, am thinking that my phone is the biggest germ and virus carrier and was going to antiseptic wipe it but as it’s an iPhone 5 have read that this will wreck it. Can I ask what people are using and apologies if this isn’t the right place to ask

Monipop84 · 10/03/2020 06:19

The whole of Italy is in lockdown and people are being asked to stay at home. How long is it going to take before the UK situation is equally bad?

My family is Italian. They went through different stages:

  1. PANIC: "I don't understand what's happening, awmygod"
  2. DENIAL: Mostly for economic interests. There were social media campaigns, like #milandoesntstop: all the businesses were pushing to keep people/tourists out and spending.
  3. ACCEPTANCE: Now there are 10,000 cases and the national health system is collapsing. They have extended the quarantine to the whole country, and people are being asked not to step outside.

We can learn from this lesson. How long is it going to take? I am still having to go to work and send my daughter to nursery at the moment....

stella1know · 10/03/2020 06:20

@hankyspanky yes please.

Its close family in CH right now, and Graubünden borders Lombardy, and the entire tourism and other industries are run and staffed by (some lovely peoplethat I also know personally from there) live in Lombardy eg Chiavenna, but cross the border pass daily to commute over. Hope they are all ok.

woodencoffeetable · 10/03/2020 06:23

my relatives are back home. apparently apart from the milan train station all was smooth.
they say they would be surprised if the quarantine measures could work in italy. italians have a special relationship with everyday rules.

AngelofTheSilence · 10/03/2020 06:34

I’ve been lurking on these threads and finding them very helpful so thanks to all contributing the easy to follow facts Flowers

I have a question though; I’ve seen people now referring to Coronavirus and then saying Covid19 is the disease. I thought they were both basically the same thing, that Covid19 is just the name given to the new strain of the Coronavirus or is Covid19 actually a separate disease caused by the Coronavirus?

Sorry, the comments I’ve seen from people referring to it this way are on Facebook so am well aware it could be a stupid question but I just want to clarify, as having all the facts straight in my ever increasing anxiety riddled head is helping somewhat.

SansaSnark · 10/03/2020 06:36

Good news that travel advice about Italy has been updated (finally).

I agree that the self isolation if you have a cold is unlikely to be followed by a lot of people, especially people who feel insecure in their jobs.

nellodee · 10/03/2020 06:38

Angel, think about HIV and AIDS. It’s the same thing.

MurrayTheMonk · 10/03/2020 06:39

Well the message about 'you'll be told to self isolate if you have a cold' but 'not quite yet', has proved to be unhelpful. Three out of my four staff scheduled to work in my care home this morning have just called in sick with colds. We all have colds half the time... but I can't say to them, 'that's not the advice yet, but it might be in two days' because that wouldn't be logical (much like the advice)

I think they are doing the right thing in one way-just Not sure what I'm going to do with just me and one other person to work this morning. I still have ten very high needs service users to care for. But I suppose this is how it will be from now until however long this goes on for.Sad
No contingency plans for social care yet (but when is there really?).

Meanwhile Dd has a sore throat (tonsils I think from the look of them) . Awaiting a call back from the GP since yesterday to talk about what to do (in case it's not tonsils).

I feel quite panicky this morning tbh!

nellodee · 10/03/2020 06:40

SARS-cov-2 is the virus and Covid-19 is the disease. Please someone correct if I have that wrong.

Horehound · 10/03/2020 06:40

Personally, I think the UK government might secretly hope for a mass death of old folk ...saving money from pension payouts and care.
I know it's a terrible thought but I wouldnt be surprised...

Horehound · 10/03/2020 06:42

@MurrayTheMonk maybe the reason you all have colds half the time is because you spread it back and forth going in to work sick!

And I would t worry too much about your dd. Sore throat isn't a common symptom of the virus. Tonsilitis is bloody shit though so hoping it's 'just' a cold and not tonsillitis!

Wannabangbang · 10/03/2020 06:43

I agree horehound this is exactly what i said on another thread. This is a wet dream for a Conservative govermment

FourTeaFallOut · 10/03/2020 06:43

I think the UK government might secretly hope for a mass death of old folk

Given the number of posts that seem positively gleeful about the deaths being predominantly among the elderly and the sick, that attitude seems to extend well beyond the government.

hankyspanky · 10/03/2020 06:44

@stella1know i've sent it to you by pm.

I've various friends and family in Como and surrounding villages. The mood is generally ok but there is a heavy police and military presence stopping people leaving their immediate areas and sending home anyone out on the streets. There are road blocks between villages.

The shops and supermarkets are only allowing 5 people to enter at any time. At the moment all the shops are fully stocked of food and other essentials. They were told to expect further updates today that could implement only being allowed to leave their homes on certain days for essential supply shopping.

I'll update as and when I hear further.

WaterSheep · 10/03/2020 06:48

Let's hope today brings a better plan.

Are we expecting the plan (keep calm, wash hands, still in the containment phase) to alter at all today? I thought the next Cobra meeting was planned for Wednesday. Is there any chance at all the Government will make announcements / changes before then?
