Travelling, making other decisions around
exposure

read up, noone can decide for you, but be aware...
Your mode of transport (train/boat/plane) is unlikely to be disinfected.
You may not be welcome back at work (forced isolation unpaid because you decided to take risk)
Getting stuck in quarantine in another country, subjected to their health service and govt restrictions on you.
What happens with your dc and school upon return.
Holiday insurance cover?

Positive ways of coping

Exercise daily, out where you won't be in close proximity (greater than 2 metres)

Eat well, healthy foods, plenty of liquid

Include natural antivirals in diet and good levels of daily vit c

Rest

Take steps to address any raised anxiety, above what might be reasonable and normal steps for keeping viral hygiene under control.
Its normal to feel more anxious, and normal to take steps to manage situation by being well prepared.

Isolation Issues

Getting sufficient shopping in on low incomes, and/or vulnerable / already isolated

Keeping on top of KEY METERS - need to top up yet in isolation - what measures are there to help

Paying mortgage/rent (private & housing associations) if not receiving sick pay

Legislation that enforced isolation = sick (for sick pay purposes)

Primary mode of transmission is airborne droplets.

Sneeze or cough into elbow (or tissue and bin it). Droplets can travel 2m.

Secondary means of transmission touch.

Hand wash to
Break the transmission cycle from hand to mouth, eyes, nose, or to others, by 20 seconds plus thorough hand washing (soap and water).

Alcohol breaks down the outer layer of virus to effectively kill, other methods may not.
(Anti bacterial does NOT do this and overuse may risk bacterial resistance).

Use 2/3rds vol alcohol to any other additive

I think the NHS is going to crumble if everyone calls with a sore throat now. Equally no one will ever go to work as having a mild cold at this time of year is not uncommon.

Horehound · 10/03/2020 06:50

@FourTeaFallOut I wouldn't say they are "gleeful" at all....just stating facts.

Kuponut · 10/03/2020 06:50

Mentioned it toward the end of the previous thread but I did get DH to mail the query about key meters up the work heirarchy and apparently it was raised and discussed at their corporate planning meeting. He works for one of the big 6 energy firms.

FourTeaFallOut · 10/03/2020 06:51

No, I'd go as far as gleeful thanks.

GhostofFrankGrimes · 10/03/2020 06:51

Be interested to see where we are once millions of brits return home from their Easter holidays.

SansaSnark · 10/03/2020 06:54

@watersheep unless something very dramatic happens today, I don't think we will see any new announcements.

Despite the number of threads about it, I don't think we are ready for widescale school closures yet in the UK. I also think that large events won't be banned until after Cheltenham is over - the betting lobby is pretty powerful and Cheltenham is obviously one of their biggest events of the year.

I think also the majority of the public aren't yet ready to abide by strict quarentine measures yet - if the government introduce strict measures too early, imo they won't work.

QueenofmyPrinces · 10/03/2020 06:54

We had a memo go around work yesterday saying that as school closures may be imminent and therefore we must all make sure we have extended family on hand to help us as we will not be allowed to take carer’s leave or annual leave to look after our children.

How simple they make it sound.

MurrayTheMonk · 10/03/2020 06:55

Horehound. Quite so. But I manage a care home and there is a crisis in social care staffing as it is.
We all come in to work sick because there is no one else to work. And yes the chances of our service users catching our colds are high. But the chances of them dying or becoming seriously ill because there is no one else to feed them, wash them, Medicate them, manage their seizures or change their peg feeds are Infinitely higher.
It's not as easy as to say 'don't go to work'. I'd love it if it was. But there is NO ONE else to care for them you see?

Horehound · 10/03/2020 06:56

@FourTeaFallOut nah. You're just being sensitive now!

woodencoffeetable · 10/03/2020 07:00

a thought on school closures - many parents rely on older relatives, often the grandmothers, for help with holiday childcare (I know I do...)
not a good thing given that older people seem to be affected more than younger ones.

BeardedMum · 10/03/2020 07:01

It’s not just the old and the elderly who get very sick with this virus. In my home country there are reports today about healthy people in their 40s who have become very ill and in hospital with it.

thesunwillout · 10/03/2020 07:04

Friend of dd's got home from a school trip to Southern Italy the night before lockdown.
Her parents must be relieved.
Her party had Pompeii all to themselves.

MmeAlice · 10/03/2020 07:05

Denmark will receive Danes travelling back from high risk areas at airports in separated areas and bus them to home quarantine.

Greendayz · 10/03/2020 07:07

I don't think anyone is gleeful about old people dying, even the Tory party - if you really want to be a cynic you could point out that older people predominantly vote for them. But everyone has older members of their family they care about. I think it's more that people who are young and healthy take a bit of relief in the fact that they and their children are likely to recover ok if they catch it. That's not the same as being gleeful that some older people won't.

But I also read something interesting about the testing system with have in England - at present they can only test 2000 a day. So this explains why the numbers have been going up very smoothly the last few days - not exponentially as people rightly say they should do. But GPs, etc are complaining that it's taking longer for test results to come back - 4 or more days. This suggests that numbers who have it are rising faster than the official figures suggest. The article said they were about to expand the number of labs that could do the test, so I'd expect numbers to rise sharply once they do that and catch up.

Skyejuly · 10/03/2020 07:09

I also work with the elderly and yes we are understaffed and often come into work when we probably shouldnt as no one will look after them otherwise :(

1st case in Suffolk now.

Exochord · 10/03/2020 07:09

If they close schools there needs to also be a full lockdown. Otherwise people will just book cheap holidays and take the kids away, thus spreading coronavirus even more.

pussycatinboots · 10/03/2020 07:13

Anyone flying back into the UK should be isolated for 2 weeks.

NerrSnerr · 10/03/2020 07:14

I don't think people are actually gleeful about old people dying. I do think that some people are enjoying the drama and that's what is coming across.

QueenofmyPrinces · 10/03/2020 07:20

That’s ridiculous of them Queen

It’s because we are nurses and therefore we “have to maintain our service as a priority” hence why we will not be allowed any time off for childcare reasons.

Of the ward I work on there are probably about 20 of us with children of school age who will need looking after if schools close.

It just shows one of the problems with the idealistic action of closing schools.

I honestly don’t know what we’d all do.

Janemarpling · 10/03/2020 07:22

Lockdown for a month would do NOTHING to stop the virus. It will still come back while it's circulating in the world!....which it will continue to do until there is a vaccine.

Have you seen the graphs? Its not about stopping it's about delay.

SistemaAddict · 10/03/2020 07:25

Morning, the thread seems to have gone a little haywire overnight Confused

It's a bit grim up north this morning and I still feel grotty. Mini bercows is feeling hot and is snotty and coughing a little. He's the only one of us who doesn't have asthma.

I think the stay home if you have a fever or cold symptoms but not yet is going to cause chaos for employers. Many people will be wondering why they will be necessary in the next 10-14 days but not now.
