Travelling, making other decisions around
exposure

read up, noone can decide for you, but be aware...
Your mode of transport (train/boat/plane) is unlikely to be disinfected.
You may not be welcome back at work (forced isolation unpaid because you decided to take risk)
Getting stuck in quarantine in another country, subjected to their health service and govt restrictions on you.
What happens with your dc and school upon return.
Holiday insurance cover?

Positive ways of coping

Exercise daily, out where you won't be in close proximity (greater than 2 metres)

Eat well, healthy foods, plenty of liquid

Include natural antivirals in diet and good levels of daily vit c

Rest

Take steps to address any raised anxiety, above what might be reasonable and normal steps for keeping viral hygiene under control.
Its normal to feel more anxious, and normal to take steps to manage situation by being well prepared.

Isolation Issues

Getting sufficient shopping in on low incomes, and/or vulnerable / already isolated

Keeping on top of KEY METERS - need to top up yet in isolation - what measures are there to help

Paying mortgage/rent (private & housing associations) if not receiving sick pay

Legislation that enforced isolation = sick (for sick pay purposes)

       *********,

Primary mode of transmission is airborne droplets.

Sneeze or cough into elbow (or tissue and bin it). Droplets can travel 2m.

Secondary means of transmission touch.

Hand wash to
Break the transmission cycle from hand to mouth, eyes, nose, or to others, by 20 seconds plus thorough hand washing (soap and water).

Alcohol breaks down the outer layer of virus to effectively kill, other methods may not.
(Anti bacterial does NOT do this and overuse may risk bacterial resistance).

Use 2/3rds vol alcohol to any other additive

You aren't being forced on holiday, you don't have insurance that will help you, make an informed decision. It's up to you but I don't think we'll be expatriating holiday makers will be a priority in a few weeks time.

No insurance will cover against you deciding not to go.

If I cancel now then I lose my money. If I cancel after the FO say not to travel I have half a chance of getting it back. There is no point in me cancelling now, even if I don't intend to go.

As for not being able to get back, that I would hope there would be some insurance for.

georgeggg · 10/03/2020 14:24

Wonder how many tests italy are carrying out in 24hrs and have been the last week.

suspended · 10/03/2020 14:25

@NeurotrashWarrior yes had heard of Virgin Money. And the locak softplay, New adventurelands.

Looks like todays figure is 373.

4cats2kids · 10/03/2020 14:25

I think a lockdown will happen if and when large numbers of people are dying for lack of intensive care beds. The mood in the country will change and the government will be forced to act. I have a feeling it’s not if but when myself, as how are we different to Italy that means we are better protected? Their health system is struggling.

cjt110 · 10/03/2020 14:25

It was 280 yesterday As of 9:00am on 9 March 2020, 280 people have been confirmed as positive for COVID-19. Two patients who tested positive have died. See data by NHS regional breakdown.
Public Health England (PHE) publish data by upper tier local authority daily.

Now The Guardian says "A total of 373 people have tested positive for coronavirus in the UK as of 9am on Tuesday, up from 319 at the same point on Monday, the Department of Health has said." So I am not sure if it was 280 or 319 yesterday!

MsSafina · 10/03/2020 14:26

A friend works in a hospital in Madrid and says all the hand gel was stolen. The sheer selfishness of people beggars belief.

NeurotrashWarrior · 10/03/2020 14:26

Explains why the local ASDA has been bare for days now, Suspended!

BarbarAnna · 10/03/2020 14:27

It was 319 yesterday on a like for like basis (same website).

FurForksSake · 10/03/2020 14:27

Yesterday was 1400, today 1600, are these the weekend tests and that's why they have tested such low numbers?

The local authority map yesterday was showing 1 case where I live but we know of at 3 confirmed.

Delatron · 10/03/2020 14:27

I think we can only compare to Italy when we know how many tests are being daily done versus how many Italy do.

The only way we are finding about some cases is when they die. Then we’re expected to believe nobody else in the hospital or their family has been infected.

emsy86 · 10/03/2020 14:28

319 yesterday so increase of 54

FourTeaFallOut · 10/03/2020 14:28

I'm not talking about getting your money back for your holiday, I mean will your insurance get you home if you go and get sick, or stuck on a cruise, or the airliner that you have tickets with go bust. How are you getting home? Are you covered?

Furfockssake · 10/03/2020 14:28

@Oakmaiden The only reference I can find is in a WHO report and it says 'Among patients who have died, the time from symptom onset to outcome ranges from 2-8 weeks.' I guess with three weeks being the most common if that's what the other scientist was saying.

RozHuntleysStump · 10/03/2020 14:29

Ok point taken about the petrol. No need for anyone to be horrible about it. I’m not worried about myself not being able to do whatever, I’m really worried about being able to get to my dad who lives over an hour away is elderly and is vulnerable if he either gets it or can’t get food etc.

Also, while I’m not a nurse or anything, I’m definitely the sort that would step up in times of need for my local community and I guess I’d need fuel in that case. I’m just getting super worried that’s all. Again, no need for people to be nasty. It just drives people away from sources of support.

michaelbaubles · 10/03/2020 14:29

But they only tested 1300 people yesterday - they're not going to get many new cases, they're just not testing the numbers to find anywhere near all of them.

EssentialHummus · 10/03/2020 14:30

But insurance doesn't cover you if you just decide not to go, only if the government say not to travel.

Another one here who was supposed to travel, to Israel. Israel yesterday announced mandatory self-quarantine for 14 days for anyone arriving in the country. Flights are not cancelled yet as far as I can see.

BoJoMoFo · 10/03/2020 14:30

319 is the total for the UK from yesterday.

280 is the total fro England, that's what's published on PHE, but the gov.uk and dept for health publish for whole of UK.

So 319 for whole of UK yesterday, 373 today, increase of 54

cjt110 · 10/03/2020 14:31

My travel insurance specifically says under "What is not covered":

  1. Travelling against FCO or WHO advice Your travel to a country, specific area or event when the Travel Advice Unit of the Foreign & Commonwealth Office (FCO) or the World Health Organisation (WHO) or regulatory authority in a country to/from which you are travelling has advised against all, or all but essential travel (other than claims arising from you not being able to travel and use your booked accommodation or curtailing the trip before completion, as provided for under subsections 1. and 5. of What is covered under Section P – Travel disruption cover when operative).

I think this is pretty standard as you rely on ABTA if you have booked package holiday.

Freezingold · 10/03/2020 14:31

@choux I will ask when they started to show symptoms tonight when he gets back

@AnneKipanki he got it from Instagram. So I don’t have a link to it. I’ll try see if it is on YouTube...

NeurotrashWarrior · 10/03/2020 14:31

This graph sort of shows that measures taken so far may be being effective here, not enough data yet though imo and also potential to rise again sharply.

Furfockssake · 10/03/2020 14:31

Update from BBC

The number of confirmed coronavirus cases in the UK has risen to 373, up from 319 on Monday, with a sixth patient dying after testing positive.

The man, believed to be in his early eighties, was being cared for at Watford General Hospital. It is thought the start of the UK peak of the coronavirus will begin within the next fortnight.

The government has responded by planning for the "worst-case scenario", Health Secretary Matt Hancock revealed in the House of Commons on Tuesday.

England's deputy chief medical officer Dr Jenny Harries defended the Government's decision to delay closing schools and the introduction of other stringent tactics, saying experts are assessing new cases on an hourly basis to achieve a "balanced response".

But new measures - including those aimed at protecting the elderly and vulnerable - are expected shortly as cases rise more rapidly across the UK.

NeurotrashWarrior · 10/03/2020 14:32

Yes and so could reflect testing numbers.

picklemewalnuts · 10/03/2020 14:32

On the positive side, the vast majority of people being tested don't have it.

So that's good news, surely?
