Travelling, making other decisions around
exposure

read up, noone can decide for you, but be aware...
Your mode of transport (train/boat/plane) is unlikely to be disinfected.
You may not be welcome back at work (forced isolation unpaid because you decided to take risk)
Getting stuck in quarantine in another country, subjected to their health service and govt restrictions on you.
What happens with your dc and school upon return.
Holiday insurance cover?

Positive ways of coping

Exercise daily, out where you won't be in close proximity (greater than 2 metres)

Eat well, healthy foods, plenty of liquid

Include natural antivirals in diet and good levels of daily vit c

Rest

Take steps to address any raised anxiety, above what might be reasonable and normal steps for keeping viral hygiene under control.
Its normal to feel more anxious, and normal to take steps to manage situation by being well prepared.

Isolation Issues

Getting sufficient shopping in on low incomes, and/or vulnerable / already isolated

Keeping on top of KEY METERS - need to top up yet in isolation - what measures are there to help

Paying mortgage/rent (private & housing associations) if not receiving sick pay

Legislation that enforced isolation = sick (for sick pay purposes)

       *********,

Primary mode of transmission is airborne droplets.

Sneeze or cough into elbow (or tissue and bin it). Droplets can travel 2m.

Secondary means of transmission touch.

Hand wash to
Break the transmission cycle from hand to mouth, eyes, nose, or to others, by 20 seconds plus thorough hand washing (soap and water).

Alcohol breaks down the outer layer of virus to effectively kill, other methods may not.
(Anti bacterial does NOT do this and overuse may risk bacterial resistance).

Use 2/3rds vol alcohol to any other additive

Does anyone have any opinions in whether I can refuse to go to my work conference?

Sunshinesky1981 · 10/03/2020 12:38

It is hard. We have a trip booked to orlando for August, it has been 3/4 years in the planning / Saving. Everything is paid off and it is a massive amount of money. Luckily we have insurance and i paid for added travel disruption cover which should cover us if we get advice not to travel (though i doubt it will cover everything, as it limits excursions / tickets which are a big chunk of the cost) We are worried if they say its ok to fly and don't put a travel ban on, but the likes of Disney/Universal close - We are staying onsite and this is the whole focus of the trip so not sure where we would stand.

I know this is the least of the world problems right now, and it seems selfish to be worrying about it, but its hard Sad

Butterwhy · 10/03/2020 12:40

Sunshine it's not selfish to be worried about it, it's a lot of money and it's bound to be dissapointing. There is a FB group for Florida holidays if you haven't seen it yet, they will probably have advice or others in the same situation who can full empathise.

WhyNotMe40 · 10/03/2020 12:41

In terms of silver linings, I'm hoping that the increased hygiene at school will mean that my thumb sucker child will come home with fewer stomach bugs and cases of worms. My non thumb sucker child doesn't come home with them so it's definitely a hand mouth related thing.

cjt110 · 10/03/2020 12:41

@WhyNotMe40 My company is small, but part of a worldwide corporation. We hold an annual client event of c.150 people. We have been asked to postpone due to the health issues surrounding CV19.

worried about coronavirus (covid19) part 19
Cheeseismylife · 10/03/2020 12:43

I feel similar. We have 3 trips abroad booked.
One to see family, one which we will never be able to do if we don't do it when it's booked, (long story), and our family summer holiday.
We don't have the spare cash to just replace the trips at a later date if we can't claim on insurance. And we have two sets of friends from abroad who have booked flights to come in may...

Exochord · 10/03/2020 12:43

I thought sore throat meant less likely
Apparently only 5% of cases present with sore throat. But then doctors keep mentioning sore throat as a symptom. I wish they’d just decide what the symptoms are!!!

Motorina · 10/03/2020 12:43

Obviously its not helpful now but does anyone think in years to come this virus may actually save many lives by making the world much more aware of hand hygiene etc. it may not but silver linings and all that

I have also been mulling over the socioeconomicl impact of a significant percentage of the wealthy and powerful dying off. For example...

-50% of the world's wealth is in the hands of a few elderly Americans
-Many of the world's most powerful politicians, dictators and military leaders are in the high risk age group.
-I think all the US Supreme Court judges are, too.

The societal impact of losing 20% of any of those could be huge.

Interesting times...

Just had a conversation by the coffee machine with a colleague who has a holiday to Italy next week. According to her she will still be going as she "can't afford" to lose the money.

I mean what's to be lost - it's already gone. I really don't understand that attitude.

MarshaBradyo · 10/03/2020 12:45

FollowingNow so you won’t see her for two weeks afterwards then? Did she say she will self isolate.

MarshaBradyo · 10/03/2020 12:46

I don’t either btw it’s a bit dim.

Squashpocket · 10/03/2020 12:46

Motorina that's a bit morbid and anyway cv doesn't have anything like a 20% case fatality rate.

SadThing · 10/03/2020 12:47

Can I asknpeople

WOULD YOU LET YOUR 11 YEAR OLD DO AN OVERNIGHT TRIP TO LONDON IN 2 WEEKS?

FollowingNow · 10/03/2020 12:47

FollowingNow so you won’t see her for two weeks afterwards then? Did she say she will self isolate.

We WFH most of the time anyway, we only go in one day a week and the plan is that no one will come in at all when it hits the delay phase.

But even so!

FollowingNow · 10/03/2020 12:48

WOULD YOU LET YOUR 11 YEAR OLD DO AN OVERNIGHT TRIP TO LONDON IN 2 WEEKS?

I think it's impossible to say at this point, by then the decision will probably have been taken out of your hands.

I mean, I live in London - don't think you're more at risk here than you are anywhere else tbh.

Motorina · 10/03/2020 12:48

It's extremely morbid, but the death rate in the 80+ is 15%, which is enough in itself to cause dramatic changes in the wealthy and powerful.

(It's also my parents, so I don't want this to happen. It's just an interesting thought-experiment.)

originalcatlady · 10/03/2020 12:48

@Sunshinesky1981 I was looking at travel insurance recently, and it said that if holidays were booked with the sole purpose of eg a sport event or a concert and that is cancelled, you get a refund, so hopefully thus would be similar?

Firecracker2019 · 10/03/2020 12:49

Would you go to a Hoseasons lodge place this weekend? I really don't know what to do and the lack of official guidance is worrying. If we go would avoiding the swimming pool be a good idea or no real benefit?

MarshaBradyo · 10/03/2020 12:49

If I were your colleague I’d check insurance t&c, if official guidance is to not travel unless essential.

MangePasTesOnglesVilain · 10/03/2020 12:49

There are so many symptoms being listed all over the place, sounds like there's no real way to tell in early days. The Chinese found a high percentage with fever, but they were screening for high temps.

Here we are looking for dry cough and fever, foreign travel contact- that's what we'll find.

Like you go and look for animals with trunks and conclude that all animals are elephants Grin

Vintage2020 · 10/03/2020 12:49

@SadThing yes I would, why not?

stoptherideiwanttogetoff · 10/03/2020 12:50

Iran up by 881 new cases today!! 😳

FollowingNow · 10/03/2020 12:50

If I were your colleague I’d check insurance t&c, if official guidance is to not travel unless essential.

She literally doesn't give a shit, she wants to go regardless as she says she and her family are all low risk.
